The outdoor theme helps to establish the cozy ruggedness of log cabins that families stayed in during the summer months. Animal themes such as black bears, moose and deer were depicted on wallpaper and various souvenirs decorated the room. Bedspreads were usually plaid blankets that were reminiscent of the lumberjack coats.

There are hundreds of bedding themes to choose from today. The rustic bedding can be covered in pine cones, Native geometric designs and a basic lumberjack plaid would go well together. Additional adornments can be included on bed skirts, cushions, pillow shams and cases, comforters and sheets. If too many themes are added the room will be overwhelming. The animal theme may have to be toned down.

Smart interior decorators always say that less is more. So once the theme has been decided on then it is time to build around it. If the room is being decorated for a hunter, they would probably enjoy a moose, bear, or deer theme.

The chosen animal can be displayed around the bed skirt and sheets, leaving the comforter relatively plain. Or an alternative choice is to have a busy comforter with the animal motif printed on it, and leave the other components of the bed furnishings free of graphics.

Accessorizing can be done with table lamps, country style furniture and posters. A simple hickory rocking chair could be added to the room. Pine and log furniture would also look suitable such as a pine headboard. The decorator is only limited by their imagination.

Handmade quilts add the personal touch to lodge bedding. Fewer people make them since they are quite time consuming to produce by hand. If skillfully made, these become heirloom pieces that fetch a high price in antique shops. The quilt is usually colorful and busy so the bedding should be more simple with solid colors rather than lots of animal prints.

Flannel sheets will provide warmth and coziness in the winter. The heat that the body creates will be kept insulated by flannel. Flannel pajamas have the same effect.

Lodge style bedding has a timeless look to it. Both boys and girls, men and women can have this in their bedrooms. Nature lovers will enjoy having images of wild north American animals to admire and remind them that they can be viewed in their natural habitat. The calming colors of mountain cabin decor will provide a sense of well being and whet the appetite to go outdoors fishing or hunting.
