Just the name of this dish implies a frugal cut of meat cooked with patience until it is just right for a New England supper. My mother used to make this for me when I was little. It is still a favorite with my sons ... though now we spike it up with a bit of wine, mushrooms, more garlic, etc.

Cast Iron Rocks!

Cast iron rocks!!, March 23, 2008
By B. Morgan (Alaska) -
I've been slowly and methodically accumulating high $, big-name cookware through Amazon. I recently saw a Food Network program which featured a cast iron recipe and I was intrigued. I ordered this item because you get a skillet, dutch oven and deep skillet all in one purchase. I also bought a few cast iron recipe books. WOW.... I didn't realize what I'd been missing. The food is great, the clean-up is easy and the stuff wears like.... well, like cast iron!!! It's nice not to have to baby this stuff. I've resurrected a few of my old metal spatulas and the cast iron couldn't care less. This is a great combo purchase but be prepared to buy a larger dutch oven and skillet later on to round out your set. All my purchases have been the LODGE brand and I'm very happy with them. Ready to use right out of the box!! Buy this... you won't be sorry

Fantastic and practical, February 22, 2009

This is the first piece of cast-iron cookware I have ever owned. I purchased it when I was looking for a dutch oven for baking bread. This was the only one that I could find that was the appropriate size, and the fact that the lid is also a skillet was a big plus.

I have since baked many loaves of bread in it and it has performed wonderfully. I also use the skillet for searing steaks before they go on the grill, and have been braising a lot of meals with it.

Make sure that you clean it well and thoroughly dry it to prevent rust. This is one of the best multi-taskers I have ever owned and I am thrilled with it. Practical, flexible, and VERY reasonably priced.

Nice and Hefty

Won't slide around while you are stirring

Nice, hefty pair of cookware., January 9, 2009

I have a Lodge Logic dutch oven as well as this combo set. All work extremely well. The seasoning is a little light for my tastes, however after a few uses and some "on the job seasoning" these pieces work beautifully and clean up quickly and easily. The handles will get very hot, so a heavy leather glove is a must! Cooks just about anything from a stew to scrambled eggs, to rice. Can also double as a dutch oven. This skillet/pot combo may be a little small when cooking for more than two people, but it's perfect for my son and I when we go camping.
