Loft Bed Plans
If the space in your kids room is at a premium, or you live in a very small apartment, you might be able to gain a ton of extra room by using loft bed plans to build your own loft bed. This lens will explore some of the basics for this space saving bedroom furniture.
Loft Bed or Bunk Bed...The Difference
Have you ever wondered what the real difference is between a loft bed and a bunk bed? Basically, the bunk bed has 2 beds one on top of the other and the loft bed has one raised bed leaving the space underneath for pretty much anything you want. These beds can be bought both online and off, or built using loft bed plans from any number of sources.
The biggest advantage to a loft bed is of course the extra space you will have after you set one up. The space below the bed can be turned into either a space for a desk or other work station, a futon and TV can turn it into a fantastic media room, or use it for closet space. The choices are endless, as well as the advantages when space is at a premium.

Loft Bed Safety
Probably the most important thing that you need to consider in making your loft bed decision is one of safety. Make sure that when you are looking over plans that you choose one that has many safety features. The bed should be made of sturdy construction, ladders which are designed properly and rails.
With small children, you need to think about the age of the child to make sure they are old and mature enough to use the bed. Make sure the space from the mattress to the bottom of the rail as well as space between the rail board pieces is not big enough for the child to get through. Also make sure that your kids know that they can't play rough on the bed. There have been many accidents and a few deaths because one or several of these things have been overlooked.

Things to Consider
Here are some tips to keep in mind before you go about building your bed.
- Measure everything in the room, from the height from floor to ceiling as well as the length and width of each wall. Keep in mind where windows, doors, light fixtures, switches and electrical outlets are.
- Check to make sure what type and exact size mattress you will be using. There can be different ones available depending on where you live.
- If your child is very active, upgrade the hardware by adding some extra bolts.
- Use high quality, strong wood.
- Think ahead a few years down the line how the bed might be used and by whome so you can choose the best design with the most flexibility.
