Logo Design Tips
Please note that this list is not in a recommended order as each of this points needs to be considered from the very first stage of the logo design process.
- The Concept - It is very important when designing a new logo that you have a solid concept. The final result will benefit massively from a well thought out concept. By spending time developing ideas with a pencil and sketch pad you improve your chances greatly of developing a great new logo.
- Research - Look at logo designs currently being used within the area that your logo is intended for. You can see then how others have communicated something through a logo for your particular market. It is important not to copy another logo but seeing the work of other designers can be most inspirational.
- Think about the message - What are you trying to communicate with the logo and is this message being delivered with clarity. A great way to see how well a logo works is to ask others what they see when they look at the logo. Ask them to guess what sort of business the logo has been designed for to see if the logo is communicating the area of business through the design.
- Be simplistic - Simple logos usually work better. Having too much detail within a logo can cause real problems when it comes to reproducing a logo at smaller sizes for example on a business card. Simple logos also help to deliver the message with clarity so if you have a subtle and clever concept incorporated within the design you do not want this to be missed because there was too much for the viewer to take in.
- Don't over do it! - This is similar to being simplistic but this is a common mistake made by people when it comes to creating or having a new logo designed. If you try to incorporate too many ideas into a logo it will be too busy. One theme is enough. Trying to incorporate a number of symbols and graphical elements does not usually look very professional, try to keep in mind that a logo is not the same as a graphic as a logo design needs to be more versatile especially when it comes to reproducing the design at different sizes.
