What are lolcats?
Basically, the term is broken into 2 parts, the first is "lol" which is internet slang for "Laughing Out Loud" and the word cats. In short, it means cat pictures which are funny. An lolcat is an image combining a photograph (of a cat, of course) with a humorous caption in english, which is usually broken english (aka bad english), which in itself is known as "kitty pidgin" or "lolspeak" which parodies poor grammar which is usually the typical norm of internet slang. Usually you will find lolcats on internet forum boards, imageboards, myspace, facebook, and other social networks. The synonym for "lolcat" is a cat macro, since they themselves are a type of image macro. The term lolcat gained attention during the early turn of the century when it was covered by a story in Time magazine, which wrote about the phenomena and staying that it has "a distinctly old-school, early 1990's, Usenet feel".
The images consist of a picture of a cat and a large caption (usually Sans Serif or Arial Black). The captions are usually written with deviations from the normal English language, for example "is" would be "iz", "your" would be spelled "ur", and so forth. Usually the way it is written is the same way a lot of people talk to their kittens, such as "Ohhh.. snookem pookems... is sooo lubby dubby" and the like. Many pictures of lolcats are performing human-like behavior and actions, and a lot of them are appearing to use modern technology such as keyboards, phones, game controllers, and more.
On many imageboards throughout the internet features bizarre cat pictures on Saturdays, or 'Caturdays'." This is the day that people get together and post their new creations or what they found on their travels through the internet. If you ever hear mention about the Ceiling Cat or the Basement Cat they are referring to the Ceiling Cat as being god, and the Basement Cat being the devil, but of course in a humorous tongue-in-cheek fashion.
In 2007 there was a project set up called the LOLCat Bible Translation Project which is a wiki-based website created by Martin Grondin. Editors aim to adapt the entire Bible into "LOLspeak" which is similar and popularized by the LOLcat phenomenon.
