Fun Things To Do In London For Free Or For Less-Shows,Hotels, Music Festivals,Attractions

Fun things to do in London for free or for less - Da Kids in Da Hood! (the nice neighbourhood of Trafalgar Square that is) - London fun free attractions, london discount hotels and walks we found, plus reasonable accommodation options for a London stay

Doing London with the kids without going broke! (As you can see they were dressed to get in the spirit of things!)However, we set out to find out how much London fun we could enjoy for free, or less anyway, whether it was a London walk, a day out or a London tour by tube! London itinerary notes and ideas for our next trip are at our London fun blog

Let's hear it for the kids! They want to enjoy days out in London, learn about the culture of the world and travel without being exploited at every turn by killer-prices kizch kiosks, irate infamously expensive ice-cream sellers, super-inflated souvenir shops or woefully extortionate water-bottle vendors!

We looked for best budget travel options in London, budget family accommodation and the best fun London attractions, trendy spots and events that kids could enjoy for free on their vacation.

Much of the eyecatching pomp, ceremony and monarchy attractions of London's history are free to see and can be made more fun for kids by engaging them. The Changing Of The Guard, The Striking Of Big Ben and The Chelsea Pensioners (taking a stroll in Hyde Park!) are all free to see and are fun if kids are absorbed in taking photos or videos, making a virtual travel blog or sketching.

Sightseeing London has never been cheaper

London museums offer some of the best value in the world for education, entertainment and culture - and many run modestly-priced activities and workshops in the school holidays, some free!Taking the kids to London is an adventure.

We had a hot time in London fairly cheaply - here's how we did it: part one - Trafalgar Square!

Low Cost London Tips (When days out in London aren't enough!)

Check and cross check all recommendations you find by searching review sites, forums and blogs. Choose recent, well-updated reviews as things in the travel world are constantly changing. If one review bucks the trend, bear in mind that the traveller may have had a different experience to others due to time of year, weather or staffing problems and that it is possible just to have a bad day!
If still hesitant, join a forum and ask!

If in doubt as to the value of attractions, take an online tour first, such as the highly recommended virtual tour of the Tower Of London below.

Cheap Tickets For London Shows - Family Fun With London Wicked Musical

Discount tickets for fun London shows are often available and are a good bet for families when the theatre seats prices soon accumulate!

The Apollo Theatre London Wicked Show was amazing fun - and worth every penny, according to my student daughter and friends! She is a Performing Arts student so she knows what she is talking about.

They were particularly mezmerized by the creepy, black set - and the spooky yet dazzling and glamourous costumes. Mind you, they nearly missed that London Wicked show, having run all the way from a Pizza Restaurant - in heels!- London fun that nearly went wrong.

When they got there, there were loads of other young people 'all dressed up with somewhere plenty to go' in long black goth wigs, purple eye make up,long black eyelashes, bottle green nail color and shiny purple cloaks. Some even had magic wands and witches' hat!

They booked through Lastminute.com fine, but at full price. These cheap London wicked tickets are a better deal-especially for families!

PS Student standby tickets sometimes available for £25 from colleges and other student outlets.

Fun London Stay Ideas And Tips For A London Walk

London Attractions,Activities,Landmarks, Eating and Fun for Kids Near Trafalgar Square

Doing Trafalgar Square With Kids

One of our most fun things to do in London was walking in the area around Trafalgar Square. In exploring Trafalgar Square with my kids I had an secret motive - I knew The National Gallery was there! I wanted to accomplish success in two areas - one was to give them a break and the space to unwind that all kids need (especially when travelling).

The second was I was hoping to encourage them to discover an interest in The National Portrait Gallery which is also located here. Ok, so I had to bribe them - so how did I do it? Well, with the Trafalgar Square Lions, Pigeons and Fountains - and of course - a yummy picnic involving some chocolate at the end!

SAVING MONEY ON EATING IN LONDON

London has a reputation for being expensive - and it can be exorbitant if you get caught out without a bottle of water, or non-stop snack goodies to feed to kids made even more ravenous than usual by calorie-burning marathon walking around the sights of London.

Use UK Supermarkets and locate them on your map before you go. Yes, there is even a Tesco Express Mini-supermarket near Oxford Street and we got our picnic lunch from Tesco Metro by Trafalgar Square! This way you will not pay inflated prices for ice-creams, water, sandwiches, wraps and snacks and drinks. Go online before you go, or ask in-store about their locations.

(Top Tip from the locals - when you hear the dreaded words 'Mom, can I get an ice-cream?' just head over the road to Tesco's minimarket and split a box of Cornettos! to enjoy cooling ices for pence instead of pounds!)

SAVE ON TRAVELLING AROUND LONDON

We found that the best deal most days for travelling around London was to buy a London Underground Travelcard. The 8 yr old travelled free and the 13 yr old was one pound. I also used a Family Railcard with mine. This gave us unlimited travel on our days out on London Underground and buses for around £4.80 per day.

SAVE WITH A LONDON RECOMMENDED HOTEL FOR BASIC ACCOMMODATION

We never bother with guest houses, small hotels or Bed and Breakfast accommodation. The kids hate being cooped up and having to whisper so as not to annoy the other guests.

Instead we use modern purpose-built Travelodges. In our experience they are clean, easy-booking,easy-check-in establishments. Yes, they are impersonal and somewhat anonymous and uniform but this suits our children who just want to do their own thing without any superfluous meeting and greeting!

I will be adding a lens with more detail on the Travelodges we have used, but in the meantime I have featured them below for those who want the information now.

(Top Tip - always cross-check accommodation reviews to help establish the authenicity of the authors. Give most credence to those with a long history of other reviews on a particular site.)

SAVE ON LONDON FUN ACTIVITIES

Might not seem much, but they loved it and all were free!

1. Taking photos and videos with their phones or cameras to create a video diary. (OK, so they were aiming to get them on youtube!)

2. Cooling their hot, aching feet in the fountains. I don't think you're supposed to but no-one said anything! Splashing faces grimy from the Tube proved a source of endless amusement too! - needless to say it soon got round to splashing each other!

3. Just enjoying the space to run around freely for a few minutes.

4. Trying to see who could chase the pigeons away from our picnic the best! Trying to get them on our hands - pigeons weren't as keen as in years gone by - mind you, looking at our kids it's not hard to see why!

5. Buying nice touristy London Trafalgar Square postcards to write and send to classmates and friends from the Square.

6. Climbing onto the Trafalgar Square Lions' backs for photos (well, more just for the sake of the fun of it actually!)

7. Watching the London world go by while eating our picnic - Red London Buses, Black Cabs, the odd Limo!

8. For arty types of kids who are visiting The National Gallery or The Portrait Gallery as well, I can't recommend a top quality pocket watercolour paintbox highly enough! If the weather's glorious, you can spend a whole afternoon in Trafalgar Square sketching and painting the monuments and characters.
We like the (English of course! as we're in London) Windsor and Newton sets. Not the cheapest but it's important to give kids the best art tools from the start.

London Fun Idea - What To See In Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square Quiz Walk

I designed this quiz with the help of some research from Amazon books about London and websites such as Visit England, BBC and Transport for London.

(Tip - Why not offer a small prize?)

What to See in Trafalgar Square

Sometimes kids have more fun learning about history if they can do it in an informal, casual way. Here are some interesting historical titbits to have ready for telling, when they reach the attractions of Trafalgar Square. The landmarks, sights and monuments can be explored as a treasure hunt style quiz - or as a more freestyle walk.

1. Nelson's Column. Have them try to look at Nelson's bad eye! They (and you!) might be surprised at what they see, or don't see. Is there an eye patch there or isn't there? One story goes that Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson's eye condition was not an unsightly one and that he never needed an eye patch. Offer an incentive to those who can research the answer!

2.The Police Box. Can the kids find London's smallest police station? Then can they spot something on its roof which legend says was from Nelson's flagship 'Victory?' (Lamp)

3.The statue of Charles 1st marks the spot where the old Charing Cross once stood. Have the kids find the spot from where all distances from London are measured. (It's on a plaque in the ground underneath.)

4.Which monument has ships on top of it? And which one was erected in honour of Queen Victoria? This answer is Admiralty Arch.

5.Which statue was a competition-winner, is the tallest Corinthian column in the world and is made from Dartmoor granite? Which big cats date from 1867 and were designed by Landseer? (The lions.)

6.Where are the names of all the poor foot-soldiers who had some of their paltry pay taken away to pay for a statue in honour in of Sir Charles James Napier? (They are named underneath.) What does he carry in his hands? (Scroll and Sword.)

7.Can they find a Triton, a Mermaid and a Dolphin? Can they find out what these mysterious creations represented? Why were fountains placed there anyway? (To break up the space due to the fear of riots in olden times.) Why is the water in the fountains so blue? (The blue tiled lining reflects light.)

8.Can they find something made from bronze under the North wall? (They are the official imperial measurements of one foot, two feet and one yard.)

9.Which statue is a bit of a 'poser?' all togged out in his Roman gear? (George 1V, the Prince of Wales 1762-1830) He presents himself bareback, riding without stirrups in a rather overdramatic and pretentious pose! Do the children think he was ever an expert rider - even without stirrups?

10.Which statue do they think was designed from a photograph? Do they think its is better than the others? (Sir Henry Havelock - The Indian mutiny of 1857.)

Exploring London - A Great Day Out In Trafalgar Square

Eating Out Cheaply In London - From Timeout at Amazon

Restaurants, Pubs, Brasseries And Quick Snacks For Your Visit To London

This popular little volume from Amazon has a really local feel to it and we have found it to be reliable so far. Timeout seem to be the experts when it comes to visiting London. The book also reflects the changing character of the capital city of England - in common with other great cities, it has become more ethnically diverse and multi-cultural, which is great news for those of us who like to be adventurous in our dining adventures! London is no longer all about fish n chips, roast beef n Yorkshire pudding, pie n mash shops or jellied eels alone! (although these are covered)

What did The Battle Of Trafalgar Actually Look Like?

Trafalgar Square Central London - Our Bench!

OK - so it's just the one we always sit on!

It's the one on the right of the doorway! Trafalgar Square is laid out in front.

Useful Tips for Picnic Fun in Central London

From here you can see the fountains, Nelson's Column, and a good view of the square.

Behind are the galleries, and for those with a few more pennies, a doorway into the cafe.

The cheaper Tesco minimarket is right opposite, for budget snacks, drinks and ices.

Be prepared to chase the pigeons away!

Many bus routes call here, including one that goes all the way out to Wood Green, a culturally diverse suburb of North London.

For those with a more 'going out on the town' disposition, the London Night Bus stops here too (but it takes ages doing the rounds!)

Alternatively, the tube is close by too, but doesn't run all night.

Classic And Vintage London Buses, Collectables,Souvenirs And Gifts

You don't have to pay London prices - a vintage London collectable from ebay might have more charm and exclusivity.

Souvenirs which are collectables or memorabilia can have enduring or growing value - we liked the nostalgia of the vintage die-cast original metal Red London Buses. Most days out in London will result in a sighting or two! Some of the souvenir kiosks are so extortionate that collectables prices actually compare quite favorably!

What Not To See In London

Let's Take The Kids To London. This guide book will tell you.

The most expensive element of your long-awaited vacation,study-year or gap year is time, and each day you spend in your chosen city or resort costs money.

Good research and orientation before you go saves wasting these long-saved-for funds. Avoid mistakes and non-runner excursions by learning from the experiences of others - preferably with books that have some entertainment and humor built in such as this one. With kids in mind, the best books on London should be fun.

Top Tip - Don't forget to pack it! It has lots of practical information you'll need when you get there.

London Secrets Not Just For Students

This student guide to living like a real Londoner has ideas for unique authentic London experiences and visits that can be as free or as expensive as your budget allows.

WHAT WE'RE BUYING

The Student's Guide To London

This is our kind of book, taking visitors 'off the beaten track' to walk, for example, in the footsteps of Dickens or Shakespeare, through areas they would have known. In London, fun walks can be had through the use of self-guided tours - as long as you have the right book or map.

Another section of the book covers 'what not to miss' and another highlights 'cool corners' of London.

There is a useful section on London Orientation or 'immersion in London living' that must be handy for student, gap year traveller and tourist alike.

Monty Python and Spamalot in London

Always Look On The Bright Side Of A Shoestring London Break

You can't get much better value than a free fun day out in London with the cast and crew of a fave funny show like Spamalot in Trafalgar Square.

On April 23rd 2007 (St George's Day, rather appropriately!) the cast and crew of the hit musical show Spamalot attempted some free frivolity and hilarity in Trafalgar Square.

What were the bold knights of the realm attempting to do? They were hoping to set a new Guinness World Record for playing the coconuts, orchestra-style.

Ever optimistic, the larger than life wannabees, roped in the good old British public and visitors by giving them coconut shells.

The idea was for everyone to play along,clip-clop style, to the famous Monty Python anthem 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.'

Perhaps their only reward was the opportunity to feast their eyes on the special screening of Monty Python And The Holy Grail in Trafalgar Square afterwards.

Moral? Check out what's actually fun to do for free, before splashing out those limited funds!

London Theatre Tickets Tips

Not all London theatre ticket outlets are the same.

It is well worth spending even just a few minutes researching the different London theatre ticket suppliers, whether online or by telephone.A fun evening in London can often be spoiled by picking the wrong show, or maybe worse! - finding out the folks next to you paid half the price you did!

There can often be substantial differences, if not in price, then in service and quality.

For example, we ordered our tickets through lastminute.com with no problems and fast delivery. The tickets were waiting for us at the theatre.

However, we were unable to choose our seats. Luckily they were ok but other people had poor seats. As it turned out, ours were a bit too near the front to see the dancers' feet!

SEE.com is one I've only just heard about but is apparently currently offering reasonable savings.

HOT TIP
There is a publication called The London Planner which is distributed to cafes and outher outlets. Look out for it - it often has half price theatre ticket offers in the middle!

My own personal favorite is theatremonkey.com. This long-established authority on London theatres and shows carries excellent reviews from ordinary theatre-goers and theatre-buffs alike.

A poster is a wonderful souvenir to add memories and atmosphere to a child's room.

A poster is a great souvenir to add vacation memories and atmosphere to a child's room.We saw Van Gogh, Monet and Turner in The National Gallery.

It's surprising how much more interest kids take in cultural matters when they are choosing something.

They might enjoy wandering around The National Gallery more if they are picking out something for their room, or something light and easy to take back home as a gift for a special friend or relative. Tate Modern provides lots of inspiration and there are Michelangelo drawings at The British Museum.

Why not have them choose one, asking which ones they like and dislike and why? The short notes alongside the paintings are just enough to add a little background to their experiences.

Many London visitors just use the underground automatically, out of habit or just because they like the reassurance of knowing where they will end up!

Yet many tube journeys, such as Covent Garden area journeys, take longer than when on foot! This is often due to Rush Hour, or popular tourist times such as the 5.30pm Saturday crush when the shops shut at Covent Garden. Visitors are actually advised to walk to the next stop! This is quicker, and offers more London fun, especially for people who panic when trapped cheek by jowl in an underground lift that's fit to burst!

Walking to the next stop takes only a few minutes, and with the right guide book, or audio walking tour, is full of interesting landmarks.

History In Schools - More or Bore?

History on the School Curriculum

In many countries, history has now been given a back seat. This is a big mistake I think . Having a natural curiosity, I went and discovered local history (Ireland and England) for myself - and became a history and genealogy addict!

What were your history experiences in school?

Yes, we cannot relive the past, but we can avoid remaking the mistakes1

LaraineRose says:

I love history .. the further back the better. we can learn from history and save ourselves from making the same mistakes over and over again.

nightwriter46 says:

I definitely believe history is extremely improtant to our futures. You have to know where you have been in order to know (or choose) where you are going!

StephenC says:

More, more more! Great lens! Keep up the good work.

InspiredWritingResearch says:

I had that same history experience too Danny and so didn't take history later on. I suddenly developed an interest in it when I saw old sepia prints of our town, then I was hooked on history for life!

dannystaple says:

More, however, it should be taught differently. I think they way I was taught history at school (this is 20 years ago though) almost put me off completely, but later on in life, there was plenty of historical information that gained my interest and I self studied. History needs to be engaging, interesting and not merely facts and figures.

InspiredWritingResearch says:

Only three British veterans left now who fought in the Great War - WW2. All in wheelchairs, their dignity and quiet grace was inspirational as, now unable to stand, they passed their wreaths of red poppies to helpers to place on The Cenotaph in Central London, to honour their dead comrades. They are now around 108 yrs old!

WhitePineLane says:

Oh, definitely more! I was a French History major in college, and am now avidly studying English history. History teaches more about the world today than most people know. As they say, you have to know where you came from to understand where you're going!

PaulaFarris says:

History is fascinating, if it is taught the right way. If schools teach the subject the way I was taught--a LONG list of names, dates, and places with no reason to remember them longer than it took to pass the test--then more history in school won't make a difference. Learning the stories about the real people who actually did all those things--That's History Education!

richgerman says:

yeah i agree history is interesting but once you presented it only for dates and other things. thats gonna be boring. it is best to have some videos of that certain history:)

beachbum_gabby says:

I love history, one of my favorite subject. It's definitely, MORE!

MuddyLaBoue says:

History is wonderful, but everything depends on the presentation. If it's just a set of dates and statistics to memorize, that's dead boring. But if the teacher discusses (*with* the kids, not *at* them)motivations and relationships, causes and effects, how the history of a place or a people or an era touches our lives today, then it becomes something that lives and breathes! And as they always say, those who refuse to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. (I'd give credit, but I don't know who said it.)

K_Linda says:

I was a history major in college, so I say more. I love to travel as well and I'm always interested in the history of a place.

Incidentally, I hated history in elementary and high school, but in college I encountered teachers who brought it to life. So, I agree with Stazjia.

debnet says:

More English history in English schools please!

Stazjia says:

More history in schools - it just needs good teachers to make it live for children. Then visiting places they've learned about in history lessons so they can imagine historical figures actually walking the same streets they are walking can really inspire them.

Someone once said something like "If you don't remember your history, you are doomed to repeat it."

InspiredWritingResearch says:

History seems to mean more to kids when it's about them - their hometown, their country, their family?
