Some parts of history fascinate me more than others. This usually includes the darker side of life: prisons, murder, crime, poverty, disease, the paranormal and the like.

So, this squidoo lens is the latest in my collection of the weird and wonderful :) I, also, live very close to at least two of these infamous prisons. Can you guess which ones?

Holloway Prison

Parkhurst Road

Facts:
Holloway prison was originally a mixed prison but became women only in 1902. It can currently hold 501 prisoners. It also houses young offenders. Offenders are sentenced by the courts.

Tragedies:
None found (yet!)

Inmates:
Past inmates included Anne Miller Fraser, Constance Markeivicz, Charlotte Despard, Mary Richardson, Oscar Wilde and Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington.

More recent inmates include Myra Hindley (1966), Maxine Carr (2002)

Ruth Ellis on 13 July 1955
Amelia Sachs and Annie Walters, 1903

Pentonville can currently hold 1152 prisoners. It remains in service as a local prison and was built over 150 years ago.

Facts:
This prison currently able to hold 1665 prisoners. It is one of the largest prisons in the UK. Wandsworth is a male prison holding all prisoners in the local area.

Tragedies:
In 1930, inmate James Edward Spiers committed suicide in front of the Justices of the Peace. They were there to watch him receive 15 lashes of the whip. He had committed armed robbery and was serving a 10 year stretch.

Facts:
Wormwood Scrubs was built between 1871 and 1895. It was used in World War II by the War department. It is a local male prison excepting all prisoners within its catchment area of London. It can house 1277 prisoners.
