Long Distance Running: Is It for You?
Ranked #2,189 in Sports & Recreation, #59,244 overall
Running is fun! Long Distance Running Makes You Feel Good
Dean: I have been doing long distance running for the last 3 years and I must admit I love it. It's a sport that allows you to be competitive with yourself as well as others. You get to see amazing sights and you get to have time to think about your life.
Nearly every country on this earth holds races every weekend ranging from 5kms to 160kms. And there are many running clubs that you can join.
I know from experience that it is hard to find good resources to help you reach your running goal, so I created this lens where I will provide you with some of the best resources for learning to run and I will give you a good run/walk program to ease you into it.
Anne: I first was a distance runner in 9th grade, quite a long time ago. I've had periods of time in my adult life where I didn't run at all and I've always missed it. It helps keep my weight under control and frankly, it really helps my mood (a lot). My favorite statement about how running makes me feel came from a friend who said, "After I run, I still have all the same problems, but how I feel about them has changed. My problems feel almost as though they were someone else's problems." To me that best explains why I like to run.

- Nice lens. I've been a distance runner for 33 years and counting. The hour or so that I spend running is my favourite hour of the day!

The one below is one of my FAVORITE running pictures -- the New York City Marathon

I think this next one is also the New York City marathon, but I'm not sure. It's title is "runners crossing the span". I guess you are supposed to know where 'the span' is?

And now, how a lot of us run: alone (though not necessarily lonely). To me this picture brings to mind the feeling of peace and the calm that comes with a run.

Ah.... one more I like -- a photo of a woman running alone with headphones on. I must say, while I really like to have someone to run with. For one thing, they make sure that I get out the door and take the first step (the hardest one). But more than that I really enjoy conversation, however inane as I run along BUT... given that I can't always make that happen, my iPod is my next most favorite running friend and it's existence has substantially increased my average weekly mileage.

Photos of Famous Long Distance Runners
Pictures include some of the Greatest Runners of All Time
I look to the following runners for inspiration, Steve Prefontaine and Billy Mills. I hope you enjoy the pictures of them here.
Billy Mills is still the only American man to have won the 10,000 meters (10K) Olympic gold medal. His victory remains one of the greatest upsets in track and field history at a distance where upsets are fairly rare. Steve Prefontaine predicted gold for himself in the 5K in Munich. While he did not achieve that goal, his passion, determination, and running talent remain legendary and an inspiration today. If you don't know the story of either of these, you MUST, not should, but MUST watch the two movies of them (see sections just below these pictures).

Learn About Long Distance Running from the Greatest Runners
Be Inspired to Greatness Yourself
Whether you ever stand on a champion's podium or receive a medal for your running, you can still learn about being great, achieving more than you ever thought you could by studying great long distance runners of the past. One of these is Billy Mills, whose 10,000 meter victory at the Tokyo Olympics was both one of the most amazing upsets and also THE most amazing Olympic 10K finish that I've ever seen.

Running Brave is the story of Billy Mill's life with the focus being on his athetic achievements. I challenge any runner to watch it and not get goose bumps watching the Olympic race.
Story Behind the Photo of Steve Prefontaine
As mentioned in section with pictures just above
You simply must know the story of Steve Prefontaine if you are to call yourself a runner. I've watched this video twice while jogging on my treadmill. I'm sure eventually I'll watch it a third time.

There were actually two videos made about the great runner Steve Prefontaine. This one is my favorite.
