While we marketers, on the other hand, have our sites on the Internet but no one is finding us. One way to solve the problem is long tail niche marketing.

When someone enters words into a search engine, they try to be as concise as possible, thus choosing the fewest words possible. As they continue to search they generally add words to their search to get more specific results.

To Long Tail Or Not To Long Tail

    That is the question...

Internet marketers seem to be split into two groups. There are the people who go for the gusto. They aim to optimize their site for the most popular keywords. If everyone is searching for 'cell phone' then they're going to optimize their site for that keyword, assuming their in the cell phone industry.

The other school of thought is to optimize a site for a very specific niche. The theory is that while it may not be the most popular keyword or keyword phrase being used by would be customers, the people that do use those words are targeted. For example, 'where to buy an iPhone' might be a niche keyword phrase. These long tail keywords are often much less expensive than the popular keywords, which makes them great for small business owners who have a tighter PPC marketing budget.

So that begs the question? How do you use long tail keywords?

The first step is to do a bit of keyword research to find the right phrase for you. This can involve a bit of trial and error. The best way to determine which long tail keywords are most effective is to do a bit of split testing.

When optimizing a website for long tail keywords use them in the same manner you would a popular keyword. Use them in your advertising, your content, your meta data and with merchant sites if you sell a product - for example Amazon. Track your campaigns and see what works.
