Programs

Individual 2 months old - adults
Our most popular and effective program. Lessons are on a one-to-one student/instructor ratio. The foremost goal is to teach students how to save themselves if they should fall into the water. Students develop a one-on-one relationship with instructors, creating an atmosphere of trust that makes learning more effective.

Semi-Private 2 to 1 student/instructor ratio
These lessons are great for families or friends that have two children around the same age and skill level who want to learn together. The instructor works at the pace of both children, guiding them through the progression of Saf-T-Swim levels.

Group As small as 4-to-1 student/instructor ratio
These lessons are perfect for families and friends that have four or more children around the same age and skill level who are looking for a more economical alternative.

Cuddles and Strokes 2 months - 3 years
Moms and Dads enjoy a unique bonding experience with their child. In this course, students learn correct swimming movements through a method we call "patterning".

Mommy and Me Down Under 6 months - 3 years
Your child now learns proper breathing techniques allowing for the introduction of underwater activity. Certified instructors begin laying the foundation for stroke work and endurance while you maintain the special bond you have built with your child by participating in the water during the lesson.

Hydro-Aerobics Adults
Ideal for people unable to exercise in a conventional manner due to physical limitations, this water exercise program is suitable for all levels.

Birthday Parties
A great way to celebrate a birthday year round!
Your own private party room.
Two hours or more of fun and enjoyment!
We provide invitations, pizza, kickboard for guests to sign, tables & chairs It's Never Rained Out!

Water Safety Tips

Learn to swim - It could SAVE YOUR LIFE

1. Never Swim Alone
2. Never leave your child unsupervised in or near a swimming pool, hot tub, or any water, not even for a second.
3. No glass containers around the pool.
4. Swim only in clear water and head for cover when a storm threatens.
5. No running or horseplay.
6. Keep electrical appliances away from the pool.
7. Don't jump in to save someone; throw something to them for assistance.
8. Learn your local emergency numbers.
9. No diving in shallow water.
10. Don't allow barriers, such as fences or walls, to give you a false sense of security regarding your child's safety. There is no substitute for supervision!
11. Keep toys, tricycles, and other children's playthings away from the pool, spa or water.
12. Don't consider your children to be "drown-proof" because you enrolled them in "waterproofing" or swimming classes.
13. Don't rely on "water-wings" or inflatable devices to keep your child afloat. They are no substitute for supervision.
14. Your pool or spa should always have well-maintained barriers or "layers of safety." Make sure your pool or spa has effective barriers - (fence/wall/latched doors/covers/alarms) - that guard against unauthorized access.
15. Always drain standing (surface) water off the pool or spa cover.
16. Learn how to administer lifesaving techniques to children, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
17. Install a phone, or keep a cordless phone, in the pool or spa area.
18. Know how to contact local emergency medical services. Post the numbers in an easy-to-see place.

Testimonials

My name is John Beck and I am currently taking lessons at your Deer Park location. Who I am is not as significant as the circumstances that brought me to your school. I was involved in a situation in which a person drowned. Instead of boring you with the details, I have enclosed a copy of the newspaper article.

"We are writing to express our gratitude to Chris L. Our two daughters began swimming lessons at the end of July 2005. At the time, both Jamie and Danielle were truly afraid of the water and had absolutely no confidence, causing them to panic even when completely supervised in arm floating devices."

Amazing Long Term Benefits

Scientific studies of infant swimming in Germany have shown that the early stimulation that swimming provides helps to develop the child in three key areas: Physically, Mentally, and Emotionally.

As compared with a control group who did not take year-round lessons, the children who swam consistently from infancy were found to be significantly stronger and more coordinated. Muscles developed in a process similar to physical therapy, enabling the children to excel at all physical activities, which was not limited to swimming. Children that swam also scored higher for intelligence and problem solving, which carried over into excellence and alertness in school. Also, emotionally, children who swam year-round were found to be more self-disciplined, motivated, and self-confident due to the constant goal setting, learning, and achievement that goes on during lessons.

News: Children with Autism

The easy bond of swim teacher and autistic boy inspires a tale to buoy souls

By Christina Hernandez

When Michele Iaollonardi heard about the half-priced swimming lessons for children with autism, she was skeptical they would work for her son.

Jackson, who was 3 at the time and in the early stages of his autism diagnosis was a "disaster" said his mother, 34, in a recent interview at her Hauppauge home.

Jackson had yet to say his first word, and didn't interact with other children and cried in unfamiliar settings. He was receiving 40 hours of therapy a week, yet Iaollonardi said her son was still severely impaired.

But ever hopeful Iaollonardi said she enrolled Jackson in six, half-hour one-on-one swim classes at Saf-T-Swim in Bohemia. "I'm never going to see what happens if I don't do it," she said.

News: Water Safety Awareness

This summer, tragedy has been striking Long Islanders at an alarming rate. It seems that parents have been reading about the horrors of poolside drownings almost every time they open a newspaper or turn on the news. What's worse is that an overwhelming amount of the people who have lost their lives this summer in pool-related accidental drownings have been young children.

Fortunately, unlike many terrible events that may befall us, accidental drownings are highly preventable. The primary purpose of Saf-T-Swim's Long Island swimming schools is to teach water safety, thereby reducing the number of needless drownings nationwide. You children will work "one-on-one" with highly qualified, caring, dedicated swim instructors whose primary goal is to teach children to "love and respect the water."

As we approach the fall season, it is the perfect time for parents to register their children for classes at our Long Island Swimming schools that will begin during the autumn months. This way, your child will be taught to understand water safety, and you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing that should tragedy strike, you child will know exactly what to do.

Our Long Island Swimming schools offer a wide variety of classes that are suited to all ages and ability levels. We guarantee that our programs will enhance your child's awareness when it comes to water safety, and teach them a valuable skill that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

As a result of this recent election, Jim will serve as President of the USSSA for the next two years. Jim is the President and Owner of eight Saf-T-Swim swim schools on Long Island.

The usssa is comprised of top-quality schools devoted to aquatic education for good health and life-long water safety. News: Learn To Stay Safe In and Around Water

The United States Swim School Association is proclaiming April 1-7 to be "Safer 3 Week" to educate everyone about the importance of being safe in and around water. The Safer 3 program is a multi-layered educational approach to drowning prevention focusing on Safer Water, Safer Kids and Safer Response.

Member schools around the country will hold events to teach children to respect and love the water. Drowning is a leading cause of death throughout the world and is the number one cause of accidental death for children under the age of five in the United States. Swim schools will take time to educate children and families on how to reduce water-related injuries and drowning deaths. This message is crucial as summer approaches and neighborhood and backyard pools start to open.

Bob Hubbard, president of the United States Swim School Association, who was recently named by Aquatics International magazine one of the 25 most influential aquatics professionals, states, "The U.S. Swim School Association is excited to be partnering with the Swim for Life Foundation in the promotion of Safer 3 Week. Families who participate in swim lessons with our member schools will receive the vital Safer 3 message at their swim lessons this month. As learn- to-swim professionals, we want to foster a love and respect of the water in our (more - Safer 3 Week Proclaimed) students and their families and the Safer 3 message is an important part of that responsibility."

News: 22 Years of Water Safety and Fun

Founded in 1984 in Bay Shore, Long Island, Saf-T-Swim has since grown from its one location to seven throughout Long Island, becoming New York's number one swim school. During our more than two decades of operation, we've helped thousands gain the skills, confidence, and enthusiasm to participate in aquatic sports and activities.

A great deal of our success can be directly attributed to the development of our unique method of teaching, which has revolutionized the way babies and toddlers learn swimming and water safety. At the same time, our instructors have earned an unsurpassed reputation for their professional expertise, dedication, and positive, caring approach. After completing our program, children and parents alike find their fear of water has been replaced by knowledge and a new found respect for the water.

Looking back, I sometimes find it hard to believe just how many years have passed, and how much we've grown. At the same time, it's very gratifying to realize we're now teaching our second generation of students. It is important to acknowledge all those who have helped make Saf-T-Swim such an outstanding company: our students, instructors, administrative staff, and suppliers. They are the very best, and I am both proud and humbled by their efforts and accomplishments."

Separation Anxiety

As they grow - 9 to 12 months Cling Time
Believe it or not, separation anxiety is a positive sign of a baby's healthy development. One day your baby can be passed to and left with just about anyone. The next day your usual baby-sitter arrives and without warning, your baby wails inconsolably as you put on your coat. Separation anxiety and its close cousin, stranger wariness, generally kick in between the ages of six months and one year. They are essential milestones that play a major role in a child's emotional development. For most parents, this is a difficult phase. Nevertheless, your baby's overwhelming desire to be close to you does serve a crucial purpose. Experts agree that it is the basis of your child's ability to form personal relationships. During the second half of the first year, babies make a major emotional leap. They realize first that Mother is a separate individual from his or her self and, second, that they value her presence far more than anybody else's. Eventually this special person can be the baby's father, sibling, or grandparent as well.

Drowning

In addition to constant parental supervision, swimming instruction year-round is the best way in which to protect your child from the very real danger that any open body of water can present. Year-round swimmers retain a healthy respect for the water and build skills far beyond those of seasonal swimmers. Lakes, ponds, bathtubs, covered swimming pools, or any open body of water can present the potential for great danger. Drowning is not only a summer danger. It can happen at any time, thereby making swimming instruction year-round much more than just " preventative medicine."

A Drowning at Closed Public Pool

Original Source: Newsday

Maruful Haque's family cannot believe the celebration they were planning for today, his 21st birthday, will now be spent in prayer and planning for his funeral.

Haque drowned early yesterday in a Babylon Town pool in Deer Park, despite the efforts of four Good Samaritans to save him, police said. The victim had been trespassing with three people he knew who fled the scene, police said.
Town Safety Officer John Beck was on routine patrol when he saw three youths at the State Trooper Fabio Buttitta Memorial Pool on Acorn Street at 2:20 a.m. As Beck approached the group to kick them out, he noticed Haque's body at the bottom of the 13-foot dive pool, authorities said.

"It's a terrible tragedy," Town Supervisor Steven Bellone said last night. "The public safety officer did exactly what he's supposed to do. Unfortunately it was too late for him to make a difference." As the officer called for assistance, the trespassers fled but alerted four people hanging out nearby, outside the facility.

The Good Samaritans - three men and one woman - scaled the 10-foot fence and jumped into the pool to help pull out Haque. The officer performed CPR but it was too late, authorities said. Haque was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead.

"It was certainly heroic," Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said of the actions of the group. "They tried everything they could to save this individual." Police did not release their names. The drowning does not appear to be suspicious, Fitzpatrick said, pointing out that Haque's clothes were piled neatly to the side, his shoes and cell phone placed next to them. He said that suggests Haque went for a swim and wasn't pushed in.The investigation is continuing.
