How to be a Good Long Distance Grandma

Ranked #1,580 in Parenting & Kids, #49,024 overall

Meet Haleigh,my granddaughter and the love of my life. Since she lives over 3000 miles away from her grandmother, I have had to find very creative ways to keep in touch with her. This lens will share some of the ways that have worked for us. Of course nothing beats holding her in my arms and hearing her laughter for real, but in between those times here's some ways that keep her knowing how much I love her and miss her.

Books for him or her

Grandmothers are living busy lives these days, not sitting in the rocking chair!

I love Amazon because if you're short on time you can shop there, and they'll gift wrap and send it out to your Grandchild. Haleigh loves to see a box from Amazon come!

Kids love to get Mail

One of Haleigh's favorite things is a box of Knick knacks that I've collected. She's almost six so she loves little boxes, costume jewelry, dress up costumes. My favorite place to find these things are at Good Will Stores. For usually just cents you can find really cool trinkets and things. I've found pagent dresses that she dresses up in and purses, toys, you name it! Also Dollar Tree Stores are a great source.

I have 5 long distance grandchildren, but Dillon, my 3 year old grandson had always lived with us until he moved to Korea. Since we had regular interaction this was extremely important to me to not lose that special bond that we have. I have found a way to keep that bond with the use of Skype. We play just as if he were sitting right here. I read to him, sing his favorite songs, play with puppets, do puzzles, the list is endless. He loves to play cars and if I am eating something he wants me to share. He loves to pretend!
