Long Hair
Long hair!
Many people want it, but not to many people have it!
Whether you're an aspiring long hair, or tried and true this is the place for you.
Long hair is a mystery. It can be awe inspiring, while at the same time it can inspire disgust and outrage.
You wouldn't believe how many people have come up to me and told me that I needed to cut my hair. Or how many people have stopped and told me how beautiful it was.
Many people believe that once a woman gets past "a certain age" they should cut their hair. I am not one of those people.
Many people also believe that long hair makes a woman look childesh, and that women need to cut their hair in order to be taken seriously in the workplace.
Again, I am not one of those people.I think long hair is beautiful, and there are many ways to effectivly, stylishly, and even elegantly.

Do you think you get treated differently because of your long hair?
I've had several people find my site by serching for "rights for people with long hair."
I've also noticed that people will give me funny looks, or talk about my hair when I'm in public.
Sometimes people will stop and say it's nice, which is nice.
But I've also had coworkers tell me in a roundabout way that I should cut my hair if I wanted to get ahead in the business world - of course in that job there was no where to go, so it wasn't a big deal.
Have you noticed that people treat you differently because you have long hair?

I started to say no, that I don't get treated differently, but yes, I do get treated differently. Here at work the women almost always tell me that I should cut it short. I'm sure they don't go around telling women with shorter hair to grow theirs so I guess that's different treatment.

I have always had long very thick healthy hair, bast my bum. Im only 21 now but since i was about 16, i have had people tell me i look like a little kid. And that my hair was boring because I couldn't do anything with it. (too heavy to put up) Its quite harsh when i think about the time i put into my hair. Last week i had 12 inches cut off my hair. Bringing it just above my bum. I miss my hair, but its nice to be able to put it up with clips, sticks, pins etc. Something ive never been able to do.

I am over 50 and have long hair. It is naturally straight. I get some positive attention from men. They generally seem to like long hair. However, I have gotten negative attention from women especially older women. They have issues. I also have gotten negative vibes from certain younger women on the street. One disturbed chick half my age felt she was in some kind of competition and when I walked I noticed she had to keep getting in front of me so I could see her hair that she probably spent loads of money on. It was rather comical and pathetic to see.

Cutting long hair
If you've had long hair for a while, you've probably had the unfortunate experience of going to the salon, and asking for a trim, only to end up with half your hair gone by the time the overzealous hair dresser got through with your hair.If you're like me, this has probably scared you away from traditional hairdressers, and it might have even made you brave enough to try to cut your own hair.
I just cut my hair for the first time using Feye's Self trim instructions, and I am really impressed with how my hair looks.
I can't draw a straight line, but my self trim actually turned out great!
Before I did step 2 my hair was really slanted, but I was easily able to fix the problem and now I have a straight cut, instead of my former fairy tell ends.
The only problem with the cut is that no one even noticed I did it...when you go from fairytale ends, to a stright across cut, and take off 4 inches of hair, you'd think someone would notice...but I guess not.
That also means I must have done a good job, since no one has commented on my crooked hair, and trust me, with my family, they'd tell me!
If you trim your own hair, I'd love to hear about your technique!
Oh yeah - Feye also has instructions for a U Shaped Self Trim, and a V Shaped Self Trim, you can see them at Feye's Self Trim

I wear it down most of the time, but on special or some church occasions and hot, sticky days, I like it up in a bun or French braid.

In the summer I wear it up, because I'm a farmer and long hair and farm life don't mix! Also it's cooler to keep it up in the summer too!

Down
EelKat says:
During the cooler months of early spring and late fall, I keep my hair in a ponytail.
During the winter it stays down all the way.

My hair is almost always down, though I usually pull the front back in a little clippie. I braid at night, and occasionally in the daytime. Rarely up - IMHO one of the primary reasons for having long hair is: COMB AND GO!

- I was excited to find this site. I have always had long hair. To me, long hair is waist length or longer although I understand that many consider shoulder length hair long. I am 50 and my hair is just past my knees (and healthy too!). I get many compliments but as someone stated, I also get lots of people telling me I should cut it and donate it and that I'm selfish if I don't. (that person was female with a male cut hairstyle and had I thought fast enough I'd have told her that she's selfish for NOT growing hers and donating it!). Great site. I am enjoying reading everything I'm discovering here. Thanks.

- Great lens. We think long hair is up to the person, but know that women with long hair over 50 are treated different. thank-you for this wonderful lens. 5 stars*****
