Longhorns who lunch

One of the benefits of working on a college campus is having many inexpensive lunch spots within easy walking distance. In this respect The University of Texas at Austin does not disappoint.

Because the cost of even reasonably-priced dining out starts to add up, I make an effort to find the best quality of food for the least amount of money. A special place in my heart (and wallet) is reserved for meals to be had under $5.

While not a comprehensive list of all campus-area dining options, these are a few spots around the UT Austin campus you could reasonably expect to walk to, dine, and walk back from in about an hour.

Great food, better prices

Some of my favorite spots around UT Austin to grab a tasty bite for under $10.

I've created a Google map of good campus-area lunch spots. In addition to helping you locate some of the places mentioned in this lens, it shows how I'm dividing up the areas described.

Lunch spots in south west campus

If you're within walking distance of the south mall you can reasonably expect to take one hour for lunch, including travel time, from these options.
  • Burrito Factory
Don't let the name put you off, this spot put together a wicked fresh selection of burritos, tacos, and tempting open-face sandwiches. Grab two tacos and glass of water for under $5.
    Dobie Mall, second floor
  • Fuse Box
Delicious French/Japanese fusion lunch plates and bento boxes. Get a small lunch bento and water, or dumplings and a juice cube spritzer for under $10.
    Dobie Mall, first floor
  • Nikki's Pizza
A staple of the campus area for over a decade for a reason. Enormous New York-style thin crust pizza slices hot out of the oven. One slice and a drink special for under $5.
    Dobie Mall, second floor
  • Arturo's Underground Cafe
They're not kidding, the seating area really is underground. I miss the old Arturo's location in the Fine Arts cafeteria. I loves me some quesadillas.
    314 W 17th St

Lunch spots near the Speedway pedestrian plaza

If you're on or near the Speedway street pedestrian plaza, you can reasonably expect to take one hour for lunch, including travel time, from these options.
  • Texas EXpresso
Panini sandwiches, salads, and gelato. Favorite daily special is the bruchetta and tepanade sampler.
Texas Exes Alumni building, 21st and San Jacinto
  • O's Campus Cafe, ACES building location
The menu and quality of different dishes varies by location. At the original ACES building location you can enjoy a cup of the soup of the day and a spinach side salad for under $5.
    ACES building
  • O's Campus Cafe, GSB location
The menu and quality of different dishes varies by location. In the GSB location enjoy a small chicken tender basket with fries for under $4.
    McCombs School of Business building
  • DoubleDave's Pizzaworks stand
You'll find this stand by the queue for Tuesday's two for $1.50 pizza roll special. Greasy goodness.
outside PCL, corner of 21st and Speedway

We love food!

What are some restaurants around UT that you enjoy?
