A Brief History of Lipstick
Lipstick is a quiet surprise that speaks volumes about the person wearing it - presenting a mood, an invitation or maybe sealing a deal. The ritual of lip painting can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times. In the early Christian times both men and women took part in painting their lips.
By the mid 1600's, the painting of lips was more widely accepted. In 1770 the British Parliament passed a law condemning lipstick, the law stated that "a women found guilty of seducing men into matrimony through the use of cosmetics could be tried for witchcraft".
The first lipstick crayon was invented in the mid 1800's by a German teenager, Charles Meyer. The first commercially successful lipstick was produced in 1880, by a company in Paris called Guerlain. Sears catalog began advertising lip rouge in 1897 for .50 cents.

In 1940 Max Factor launched Tru - Color, this was the first long lasting lipstick that was nonirritating and that didn't change color after it was applied. The lipstick revolution continued into the 1970's with women experimenting with a variety of painting techniques. These techniques would include matching the color of their lips to their eye makeup and clothes.
The 1980's ushered in a time of excess - Big makeup and big lips were in style and were seen in all the pages of major fashion magazines. The 1990's was the lip liner revolution. What's In The Lipstick Ingredients?
The ingredients which complete a tube of lipstick include three basic categories: waxes, emollients and pigments. Wax is used to make the lipstick "stick" resulting in a long lasting lipstick. Pigments are what give the lipstick its color and emollients are the oils that are added to the lipstick.A good lipstick should go on smoothly, have lasting color, feel comfortable on the lips, moisturize and soften, be smear proof and maintain it's shade.
