What is Long Tail Marketing?

If you do any kind of Internet or Affiliate Marketing, you may have heard of the term "long tail". There's a print hardback book and a website where the original discussions on this started, but in general it's similar to a "low hanging fruit" marketing strategy.

Now just in case you haven't heard that term before either, let me try to explain, because this is the same thing as targeting a "niche" market as well. Let's say you decide to target the weight loss market with your internet or affiliate marketing efforts. Maybe you plan to make an information based website to generate income from AdSense, or maybe you plan to create a weight loss ebook to sell outright, or maybe you want to create an affiliate product shopping site to sell weight loss products.

No matter how you plan to make money with this market, you probably know from the start that it's extremely competitive. And that's because it's a very broad market. Weight loss can mean any number of things. So if you know a little bit about marketing online, you might quickly decide to tackle just one small piece of that market to start with. So you'll start looking for smaller niches within that bigger one. Losing fat, Losing ten pounds, or Lowering calories for example. These are smaller niches within the weight loss niche, but they have less competition.

Now to get the "long tail" or "low hanging fruit", you need to zero in even further. Something like "lose ten pounds in ten days" for instance. This phrase is longer, thus it's likely to have much less competition than "weight loss". At the same time, it's not likely to get nearly as many searches each day either. But that's where the long tail, or low hanging fruit strategies come into play.

In short: You try to generate traffic to pages and websites that have very small searches each month. And you try to make as many of those pages and sites as you can. This way, you have a better chance to rank well for each page, and you can combine the power of the trickle effect.

 

For example, let's say you create a product shopping site using affiliate datafeeds. Almost by default, these pages are optimized for the long tail marketing strategy, because they're optimized for very specific phrases. When someone searches for a specific product name, your website or page is more likely to come up in the search engine results above a general or related topic page.

Using broader marketing strategies, you might create a page designed to generate traffic from an overall niche. And while niche may get searched on 100,000 times each month, you'll struggle to get even part of one percent of that traffic.

If instead you zero in and target a tiny specific area of that niche, you'll have much less competition to deal with and your page or site will be lazer targeted. And the specific page phrase you target might only be searched for 10 times each month instead, you're more likely to get a much larger portion of that traffic straight to your page.

So if you create 1000 pages all designed to specifically target one individual phrase that isn't searched for too often, that adds up. 1000 things being searched for 10 times each month is the equivalent of 10,000 searches. And if your site or page comes up in the top 5-10 results in the search engines, you'll be much more likely to get a large chunk of that traffic.

In other words: Targeting tiny little, seemingly unimportant words or phrases can add up to a lot more traffic and income than targeting large, popular markets.

Whilst there are many key things to ensuring your success in Pay Per Click marketing here is one that has increased the success of many PPC marketers - long tail keywords convert better. For those of you who dont know, a long tail keyword is a keyword made up of generally three of more words that better qualify what a person is looking for. For example, a primary keyword may be video camera, a long tail example of this may be Sony video camera 3CCD hard drive.

Whilst its important to spend time doing keyword research for whatever form of affiliate marketing you are pursuing, spending a good portion of this time tracking down long tail keywords is a key to increasing your success and this is no different in PPC marketing.

When someone is doing a search on a long tail keyword, the probability of them wanting to buy is generally much higher than anyone searching on a general keyword. In the example above, the person knows exactly what they are searching for whereas a person searching on the term video camera is generally just browsing to see whats out there. If you had a website promoting Sony 3CCD video cameras with hard drives, then the person who found your link would generally be more inclined to either purchase whatever you are selling or fill out a Cost Per Action form. If you are advertising something that is regionally based, for example you are advertising computer repairs, then a good suggested long tail keyword would be something that is geographically based, for example, computer repairs in sydney or computer repairs in las vegas, as you can be pretty confident that someone searching on regionally based keywords are motivated to make a purchase.

A caution here is that whilst the long tail keyword converts better, you should still make sure your research shows that the long tail has good search history as you dont want to be buying obscure long tails that people never search for.

When website traffic is up, owners can experience greater sales or increased ad revenue. Knowing this and actually making it happen requires a little strategizing. This is where the use of long tail keywords can be extremely helpful.

The idea that gave birth to the use of long tail keywords came from an article Chris Anderson published in Wired Magazine. Anderson put forth the notion that the collective sales of niche products could outpace the sale of popular products - especially since so much competition exists on the popular front. This idea has since been applied to the Internet and methods for driving traffic to sites.

Before diving into the concept, it helps to understand what long tail keywords are. They are nothing more than longer keyword phrases that people use during their Internet searches to help them find sites of interest. Rather than single keywords that most website owners and managers are used to optimizing for, the long tail involves the less frequently searched keyword phrases. These keywords tend to be more focused and targeted than a single world search. They also tend to reflect exactly what a searcher needs to find. So, in essence, they are the "niche."

If a person searching is looking for information on training a dog, for example, it's possible they would go beyond typing in "dog training". Their actual search might include terms such as "training a golden retriever", "housebreaking Labrador puppies", "agility training for dogs". These particular terms might not have the ranking or traffic potential that that main keywords do, but they have proven very useful for tapping into traffic in a different way. The trick here is that these phrases don't have the competition that main words might.

Long tail keywords deliver on the benefits. These can, when used correctly, drive more targeted traffic over the long haul. The benefits of using long tail keywords include a potential for a higher conversion rate (since the exact focus of the searcher's request has been met), easier ranking on search engine sites, increased traffic and, consequently, increased revenue. Basically, the benefits come from tapping into a lot of different tailored searches, rather than trying to compete with thousands of other sites that focus solely on the main single-word keywords.

Putting the Long Tail Keyword Strategy to Work 

Other options for optimizing traffic with the right keyword phrases

Putting the long tail keyword strategy to work on a website requires finding the right words to use. There are several easy ways to do this.

One way that site managers often use is to purchase or use a tracking program such as HitTail This program analyze a site and makes suggestions on long tail phrases that might work. HitTail is easy to use and very helpful. Another method involves actually looking at the phrases visitors to a website type in for internal searches. This can be a great way to find out exactly what things visitors are searching for, which can lead to better optimization. The Google Adwords Keyword Tool and other similar programs like Ad Word Analyzer software can also be quite beneficial.

Other options for optimizing traffic with the right phrases exist. They include looking at the competition to see what long tail keywords they use and even just allowing a natural development to take place. The latter involves simply adding more content to a website on a regular basis, using core keywords and phrases as the backbone.

Getting started in optimizing a website with long tail keywords isn't very difficult. Most people suggest looking at competition sites to see what they do and then figuring out the best phrases to use in the optimization process. Next comes a need to increase content that could help in tapping into the traffic. And of course, do consider using keyword tools to speed up the research process.

Driving traffic to a website isn't always easy. Going through the backdoor by targeting niches can be one way to make this happen. Long tail keywords are the key that can unlock it all. It is extremely important to use them.

Yes, you have a long tail. You just don't know you do. If you're in a niche, then you have a long tail that you may not have been aware of. And the interesting part of the whole long tail issue is that that is where you will get the most for your efforts.

You must have heard of keywords, haven't you? If you have done serious keyword research on a theme, you'll discover that there are keywords that have very huge search volumes, those could be called the head. The head refers to the main keyword for a niche.

Now, for every main keyword, there are many (hundreds and perhaps, thousands) small keywords that trail the main keyword. Those key phrases that trail the main keyword are the tail. This is a rather empirical definition but it should put you on the same plate with me.

They usually have more laser-focused traffic and usually have less competition than the main keywords. Inexperienced folks don't go for them because of their low search volumes.

Apart from the fact that you'll have far less competition with these laser-targetted keywords, you'll experience better conversion.

But imagine ranking between 1 and 10 for hundreds of such keywords? If each sends just 100 visitors monthly, it will amount to tens of thousands.

The best part is that by their search term, you can tell more precisely what they want. And you know what happens when you give your site visitors what they're looking for.

Finally, on the long run, they'll build up your ranking for your major keywords and even your niche's main keyword.

Don't waste your time trying to get your website a top rank for the most popular search terms in the search engines; if your site is fairly new, this will be next to impossible. Your competition will already have the top search terms dominated and unless you have a massive advertising budget, it's not worthwhile to attempt to target these terms - at least not at first.

When you're creating content for your website, focus each page on a different set of lesser searched keywords and keyword phrases. While these keywords won't bring in massive amounts of traffic on their own, having multiple pages - each with its own keywords - can produce a sizeable amount of traffic.

The power of the long-tail

The long-tail refers to the large numbers of keywords (and keyword phrases) with small numbers of searches on the search engines. While there are only a handful of popular keywords, related to a particular niche, that have the highest number of searches, there are plenty of keywords related to the same niche that are searched for fewer times (the long-tail).

If you target the keywords in the long-tail there is much less competition, so its easy for you to dominate the search engines for these terms. And if you rank well for enough of the long-tail keywords, you can produce the same amounts of traffic that you could see if you were to rank well for the more popular keywords.

When you're targeting long-tail keywords, don't try to stuff too many onto one page. Split them up into related categories and create separate pages with content that targets a category containing only two or three keywords at most.

Do not underestimate the power of the long-tail; a large list of less frequently searched keywords can generate just as much traffic as a small list of popular keywords.

Long tail keywords is a term you will often come across in SEO circles, and basically refers to the less popular keywords that get fewer searches per month in the search engines, but are easier to rank highly for, because there are far fewer sites competing for that term. In short, they can be the difference between getting little or no traffic, and getting hordes of traffic to your website.

Let me explain in more depth why they are so important.

If you think of each keyword as a potential doorway into your site from the search engines, then obviously the more keywords you are optimizing your site and it's respective pages for, then the more traffic you should expect to receive.

That's correct in theory, but the reality is that if you are optimizing every page of your site for the most popular keywords in your niche, then even if you are heavily optimizing your site, you are still looking at many months before you start ranking anywhere near the top of the search engines.

So while you should target the most popular keywords in the long-term, you have to think about getting traffic in the immediate future. This can be best achieved by targeting the less popular keywords that have far less competition in the search engines.

You can use any number of keyword research tools to discover these keywords and phrases. They are usually between two and five word phrases long, and as I've already mentioned have far less websites competing for that particular phrase.

So what you will want to do is to find a popular keyword that you want to rank highly for for every page of your site, but also look for three or four of these long tail keywords or phrases, and focus on optimizing for these terms initially. This way by adopting the usual SEO methods, and having a good internal linking structure, you will start attracting traffic from the search engines to numerous pages of your site from these various different long tail keywords.

Long Tail Keywords Convert Better 

That basically explains why long tail keywords are so important in relation to SEO, but I should also point out that these longer terms are also good selling terms, and therefore convert very well. This is because these longer terms often better convey exactly what the searcher is looking for.

For example, let's say your site collects leads for a particular dentist in San Diego. Now a page optimized for the term 'San Diego dentist' would obviously have very high conversions, whereas a page optimized for the broader term 'dentists' would receive a lot more traffic (if ranked highly) but would see minimal, if any conversions. So this is another reason why you should target those long tail keywords.

This also ties in with pay-per-click advertising because while most inexperienced advertisers will target the highly searched broader terms, the advertisers who are cleaning up are those bidding on the long tail keywords that get less traffic, but are far more targeted and have far less competition.

So to conclude, if you have any kind of website and are only optimizing your site and it's respective pages for the most popular, and most competitive search terms, then you are missing out on a lot of free and targeted traffic from the search engines. This is equally applicable to pay-per-click advertising, so the importance of long tail keywords cannot be underestimated.

One of the hot topics in search engine optimization right now is the long tail; that is, the 3-5 word keyphrases that can be less competitive and bring you in more visitors. However, what qualifies as "long tail" can depend on your niche.

Let's take a look at "home business" as a keyphrase. Two words.

Increasing "home business" into three words expands a little bit into the long tail but in many cases isn't decreasing the competition that much.

Now take "search engine optimization." Three words, but definitely not a long tailed phrase for that particular industry. We're talking some serious competition for those three words.

This is the case in many an industry. Don't limit your long tail thinking to just 3-5 word phrases. In some industries you're barely describing it at 3 words. Things don't even start to get interesting until you have at least 5 words in the phrase.

The entire point of the long tail is to get the attention of the serious searchers, the ones who know what they want. People typing in"home business" and similar phrases into a search engine are just exploring. They generally aren't ready to buy. Someone typing in "affiliate home business" or "home business party sales" is somewhat more ready to go, but perhaps not completely certain. But as the words get more definite you can quickly recognize that someone is searching for something they are really interested in.

Rather than thinking of the long tail as a 3-5 word keyphrase, I suggest trying to think of it as a keyphrase 2 or more words longer than your primary keyphrase. In many industries a single keyword doesn't come close to being relevant; in fact many times 2 words don't do much better.

The challenge with the long tail then becomes "how long." How long a phrase should you aim at?

You cannot get every phrase typed into a search engine for your topic. It's just not possible and every day phrases that no one has ever typed in before are used. What you want to do is pick phrases that are still typed in regularly. You want phrases that will be productive, not that will only produce a visitor by sheerest random chance.

This is why you need to make the most of your keyword research. You want those keyphrases that customers actually use yet relatively few of your competitors have noticed. That's where your best shot at making a living off the long tail comes from.

Using the long tail effectively is not all that easy. You have to be able to work it naturally into your copy. You have to appeal to the search engines. You have to be able to use a lot of different yet similar keyphrases without appearing to be nothing but near duplicate content. Originality can be hard to maintain if you're trying to optimize a site.

This is what makes the long tail ideal for pay per click. You can make as many targeted pages as you need, and just block the excess from the search engines. Your visitors get what they need and you don't annoy the search engines. Long tailed phrases are more likely to be on the cheap side. Combine that with the tendency of such searches to be more serious and you have a dream pay per click situation.

Every webmaster is going to have his or her own way of dealing with the long tail. Take your time and test what is effective with your sales tactics.

Unfortunately, when you run several sites on Internet marketing you are constantly bombarded with online marketing products, techniques and the latest marketing fads... you become very cynical of the latest trends. I only half-heartily started testing Long Tail marketing -- huge mistake -- for I immediately started seeing results with my online sales. Just wish I had paid more attention to Chris's advice on Long Tail marketing and implemented it sooner in my overall marketing strategy.

It has made all the difference in the profitability of my websites. The reasons why are explained below, as well as a detailed description of Long Tail Marketing and how you can use it to boost or increase your online sales.

Don't make my initial mistake, discover everything you can about Long Tail Marketing and start using it in your own marketing.

What is Long Tail Marketing? 

Long Tail Marketing refers to the technique or method of using a long string of keywords when targeting prospective buyers. Instead of using/targeting one or two single keywords in your online marketing - you use a longer keyword phrase or a whole group of related keywords; thus the name, a long tail or string of keywords.

Perhaps, the best way to explain Long Tail Marketing is to use a simple example. Lets say you have a travel business and you have an online site associated with your business. Instead of targeting the keyword 'vacations' which will be very competitive and very hard to place on the first page SERPs in the major search engines such as Google, MSN, Yahoo... now with Long Tail Marketing, instead of targeting the broader competitivek eyword 'vacations', you target a longer, more precise phrase: 'honeymoon vacation packages to Niagara Falls'.

Keep in mind that keywords are the exact words surfers type into search engines to find what they're looking for on the web. You can plainly see that the second keyword phrase is more targeted than the general keyword 'vacations'.

Why Is Long Tail Marketing So Effective? 

There are several reasons why Long Tail Marketing is so effective. It has narrowed down and targeted exactly what the prospective buyer is searching for. It is precisely the product or service that they intend to buy. It's only a matter of you selling it to them.

But more importantly, by using Long Tail Marketing, you have found the prospective buyer at the exact time or stage when they are ready to buy. You have found them at the right moment in their buying process -- they have made up their minds to exactly what they want and are just looking for a quality product or service to meet their needs. You satisfy their needs with a quality product or service.

Lets look at an example from my own marketing, I run a simple online laptop guide within one of my sites. Instead of targeting the very competitive and unreachable general keyword 'laptops', I go for a longer keyword phrase such as 'best gaming laptops'. And the even more targeted 'Alienware Aurora m7700' -- someone searching for the last keyword phrase more than likely has already decided on what type of gaming laptop they want to buy. This last keyword phrase is much more likely to convert into a sale.

How Do I Use Long Tail Marketing With My Site? 

Remember back to when you last bought something online, what keywords did you use to find it? If you have an online business, you must target the keyword phrases your customers would use to find your product or service. You have to find these keyword phrases and use them in your marketing.

Most professional marketers use some type of keyword software to research their keywords and keyword phrases. I use the very powerful Keyword Elite by Brad Callen and it quickly gives me all the keyword information I need to put my Long Tail Marketing into place.

But this software is expensive, so another alternative would be to use such sites as Wordtracker or the one I like www.nichebot.com, it will tell you how many searches are made each month for your chosen keyword phrase and give you some indication of your competition.

The real beauty of using Long Tail keywords -- there is little or no competition for your keywords. You will find it easier to place on the first page of the different search engine for your targeted phrase. If you do Pay-Per-Click advertising, you will save on costs by using Long Tail keywords. Plus, both your conversion rate and ROI will be higher.

Marketing Tip: Always create a page on your site for each Long Tail keyword phrase you target, place it in the title and the url. Plus, if you write articles, place your keyword phrase in the title of your article and syndicate your articles around the web using sites like Ezinearticles.com mentioned above.

Of course, all income results from Long Tail Marketing or any marketing method will depend on your own effects and marketing abilities. No one can guarantee sales but I hope you will give Long Tail Marketing a go. It is simple, direct and effective.

What Are Long Tail Keywords?

Before we define what a long tail keyword actually is, we must understand what a "broad" keyword is. A broad keyword is a 1 or 2 word search term used by someone who is making use of a search engine to find information on some subject.

Ex #1: User types "Dogs" into the search engine.

Ex #2: User types "Dog training" into the search engine.

For the purposes of internet marketing, if you are trying to market a Dog Training book, you do NOT want to be marketing it to users searching for these very general 1 or 2 word phrases. The reason being people who are searching so generally are not likely in 'buy mode', they are more likely in 'information finding mode'.

HOWEVER,

A long tail keyword is a more specific search phrase of 3 or more words.

Ex #1: User types "Dog training guide"

Ex #2: User types "How to train my pug not to bite"

These searches are much more targeted and the user who has entered these searches in is someone who is much more likely to purchase something as they are looking for a very 'specific' solution.

Long tail keywords will also have a lot less competing webpages which in many cases will allow you to easily take the first page in Google searches.

Find the right long tail keywords to work with and you can not only help people find what they are looking for, but also create and develop a passive online income stream which will pay you even while you sleep. Using long tail keywords is not only very easy, but also VERY profitable.

SEO And The Long Tail - Part 1

There's been a lot of talk lately about "The Long Tail", the Chris Anderson book that has become kind of the bible of niche marketing. In his book, Mr. Anderson describes how the blockbuster is quickly becoming a thing of the past as technology (the internet) is allowing businesses to focus or essentially hone in on formerly underserved markets.

Case in point is the music industry. In the old days (10 or so years ago), a band would release an album, the record company would promote it, hopefully radio stations would start playing it and once demand was there, record stores would stock the album. It had to be this way because (brick and mortar) record stores, have very limited shelf space. They simply can't afford to stock very many albums, since only the records that receive radio air play sell more then a copy or two, that's all the record stores can afford to stock.

Fast forward to the 21st century, when high speed internet connections and ipods rule, the entire music industry changed. Now, virtual stores (websites) like itunes can stock an almost unlimited inventory of music. A digital album doesn't take up shelf space, it takes up a few million bytes of super cheap disk space and it can be delivered to the customer's computer/ipod in a few seconds over the high speed internet connection. Today, music lovers can search through millions of songs many produced by completely unknown artists - with no record label, and without any radio airplay and they can buy what they like, when they want to.

The economics of owning a "record store" have now shifted, from only being able to stock a very limited number of titles to being able to stock anything that is or can be saved to a digital format. This makes it economically feasible --in fact highly profitable, to stock titles that may only sell one or two copies per year, simply because there are just so many of them.

So what does all this have to do with SEO?

A lot when you think about it. First anyone who has owned a website for any length of time and has reviewed their websites log files will tell you that a large number of hits they get from search engines come from some pretty unpredictable search terms.

As an example, here are a few actual search terms that one of my sites received traffic for recently.

"car accidents on wantagh parkway nov. 30 2006" "cool places to go to go out and long island" "newsday articles babylon official write about li pilots"

Do you think I tried to optimize for any of these terms? Do you think I could even come close to thinking up any of these terms? Of course not, these terms are simply natural results of the content that I post to this site. This site happens to be about Long Island and these search terms are essentially the long tail search terms of my content. These long tail terms also happen to be much more focused then you would normally SEO for, these are kind of the niches of the niche.

The long tail was not effectively put into action until a few years ago. When the idea of effectively targeting consumers for smaller niches all of the sudden became very feasible and extremely profitable.

So, why is this important? The main search terms have a lot of competition. The niche topics have fewer visitors but a lot less competition. This means that if you can create one site for a certain niche, you can make a few dollars a day. If you can make 100 sites that make five dollars a day you have five hundred dollars a day. Replicate this process more and more and you will find yourself making loads of money online.

Many people are making money online because they are targeting these niche topics. A lot of the money that is being made comes from several small websites composed of a few good articles will information on that niche. Once the small site is created, google ads are placed on the page along with affiliate links to monetize the site. Once the site is setup and ready to make money an article is written everyday and submitted to well known article directories. The more articles you can write and submit, the more visitors come to the site. The more visitors you get to your site, the more money you make.

There are several tools you can use to speed up the process and many tricks of the trade that will make the process for efficient but now you know the basics. You can start making money online with the long tail promoting niche topics from the knowledge you have obtained from this article. It is not rocket science but it does take discipline to keep going. Anyone can do it but many do not. Those that choose to go through with it are becoming very wealthy making money online through long tail marketing.

SEO Content Writing and the Long Tail

It used to be that I would tell clients, "The more content you have, the morel likely you are to generate search engine traffic from longer searches. Although you might be targeting one or two of the more popular keywords, more content will allow you to start collecting hits for longer search strings that aren't as common. Those add up and provide a great deal of residual value to the content."

Although those statements are true, coming from a freelance content writer, they have a tendency to sound a lot like "way #29 for this guy to sell his service." I could almost hear potential clients thinking, "Sure, if I have enough content I might get occasional hits for 'left-handed widgets for tired children in Monrovia,' but I want 'left-handed widgets' traffic. I can SELL to those people."

Since 2004, there's a growing discussion about this whole issue and what it really means in terms of site traffic. Fortunately, those involved in that discussion have started using a pithy name for the phenomena, the "long tail."

It's my belief that the current research and analysis on the long tail of search traffic is a great argument in favor of hiring a content writing pro.

Let's start at the beginning of all of this.

Wikipedia's discussion of the long tail provides a nice summary:

"The long tail is the colloquial name for a long-known feature of statistical distributions ... The feature is also known as "heavy tails", "power-law tails" or "Pareto tails"... In these distributions, a high-frequency or high-amplitude population is followed by a low-frequency or low-amplitude population which gradually "tails off". In many cases the ... long tail...can cumulatively outnumber or outweigh the initial portion of the graph, such that in aggregate they comprise the majority."

Chris Anderson from Wired has a great book about the long tail, and created a public diary about his tome that included a post called "The Long Tail of Design" that I think serves as great place to develop an understanding of the whole idea. It's a nice "1 minute primer of long tail thinking" for those who aren't familiar with the concept.

If we graph a market, we have a body, representing the "mass market" and then a long trailing tail of smaller niches with correspondingly smaller populations. However, if we look at our graph, we'll notice that the long tail actually contains just as many, if not more, potential consumers than the bigger "body." Additionally, we should recognize that most sales efforts are concentrated on the body. Thus, the competition for the interest of the body is much more intense than is the competition for various points along the long tail.

You can see where that's going, right? Niche marketing. Long tail theory, by that name or any other, has been one of the driving forces behind internet marketing for some time now. People in the IM community have been doing their market research in hopes of finding potentially lucrative smaller markets that one can mine for profits more efficiently than the massive area of the body.

Yes, running a series of "boutique sites" can be more profitable than trying to take on eBay or Wal-Mart.com. No kidding. What does this have to do with hiring an SEO content writer?

Good question.

Here's the thing: We can apply long tail theory to search engine results, too. If you take a popular keyword, log the searches made containing that keyword, and graph the results you are going to get something a graph similar to the one we just discussed.

There is going to be a mass of searches just for the keyword and obvious 2-3 word phrases using the keyword. Then, you are going to have a precipitous decline for searches using other strings that will result in a long, flowing tail.

So, you can fight for that traffic in the body, but it's going to take some work. There's a lot of competition in the body. You can also start mining the long tail for traffic.

How? One of the best ways is content--and lots of it. If you hire someone to handle your SEO content writing and to generate a series of pieces on "widgets," that content is assuredly going to produce strings containing the very kind of things for which those long tail searchers are looking.

Here's an additional perk--even if you are not sold on the long tail idea, the content itself still helps with respect to marketing to the larger body. There is no forced compromise. Well-written content will serve both needs simultaneously.

An entry at a popular SEOMoz.org blog noted:

"In the long tail of keyword searches, the great value comes from having hundreds or thousands of unique, valuable content pages written on a niche subject. The millions of completely unique search terms that hit the engines each day help to bring in traffic that a purely 'designed' strategy could never receive."

Blackbeard SEO said that having a nice long tail the "hidden secret of blogging" and makes a strong argument for content as a means of long tail access with respect to blogs:

"So how do you hit the long tail for your site? Well, there are a few tricks that can help you, but realistically it's simply a matter of how much content is on your site. The more you post to your blog the longer tail (keyword-wise) your site will have. Now, I'm not saying that you should post a bunch of crap posts to a blog, but a blog that has 1000 posts will have a much longer tail than a blog with 100 posts. That is why most blogs don't make a whole lot of money for the first 6-12 months. It takes a lot of time to write enough content that a blog starts to have a really long tail."

NetBaldwin noted that constantly updated content regarding one's primary keywords and related topics is important to tapping into the long tail:

"To capture searchers through the Long Tail, a web site must include content that is consistently updated. And that content must go beyond the primary focus/purpose of the web site while also being (somehow) related."

Big deal, right? After all, those types of searches are few and far between. They don't represent a real traffic flow. That may be true if you look at them individually, but as a group, they produce a great deal of traffic. And the more content you have, the greater likelihood you have of snagging good placement for many searches located within the long tail.

USWeb, the outfit behind Blogitive, noted:

"Try to imagine the type of impact 1,000 targeted terms have on long tail. Suddenly your site is visible for all sorts of terms that you would have never thought of.

"To make matters even better, there's reason to believe these long tail searchers are actually more likely to buy than those targets within the body. These people are conducting more detailed searches than those who are just typing "widgets" into Google and cruising around aimlessly. They're searching with a purpose.

If you run a website, you can certainly see the benefit of covering the long tail, especially if the best route of doing that also assists efforts in the body, as well. The bulk of the search population--which contains your potential traffic--is hanging out in the long tail. What is long tail search engine optimization? And how will it help your internet business?

The theory is simple really. You can make just as much money or maybe more out of the less clicked keywords than the more popular keywords for your given product or service.

Although this may have not been feasible some years ago, with the advance in many keyword and analytical software programs, it is now possible.

So lets examine the theory a little more.

The premise is that by knowing many or even all of the keywords and phrases that bring in say 20 to 30 percent of your traffic, you can capitalize on this by meshing or organizing these keywords together which then leads to a snowball effect on the search engines and creates many more rankings.

As you build more and more of these keyword pages or blog postings, your incoming traffic will start to climb and within a given period of time, 50 or 60 percent of your traffic can be supplied through these many additional higher rankings or "long tail" optimized keywords and phrases.

Such a shift away from having to "compete" with many other websites in your business field does and will bring many benefits.

1. The option of removing the use of some advertising completely. 2. The option of minimizing some advertising and campaigns. 3. The option of scaling down search engine optimization campaigns. 4. Due to the expansion of keywords and phrases, the option to add additional and or up-sell products. 5. With more pages, the use or larger use of monetized advertising could be used. i.e. Google Adsense.

This is by far a minimum list of all the benefits that such a "long tail" campaign may bring however the main points being reduction in costs and increase in profits.

Combine this with the current low prices of placing new material online and the minimal fees required to have new content written in economically growing countries, you have a very cost effective marketing plan.

Lastly, one of the main focal points or benefits of such a campaign would be the major search engines themselves.

Constantly scrapping over high targeted keywords, is off course accepted by the search engines, as long as you always stay within their rules and requirements.

What the search engines do actually love... is on topic, keyword rich content pages and lots of them!

Submitting many of these "long tail" keyword pages will then lead to many first page rankings, thus helping your whole website via the downward flow of a higher ranking score. In turn, this helps all pages, even those that have a high level of competition and may have previously required search engine optimization.

At the end of the day, a very well thought out SEO marketing campaign is about utilizing all options available for maximum return. For your business, "long tail" search engine optimization may just be one of those options.

The Benefits Of PLR Content For Long Tail Keywords

Over the period of the last 10 years the progression of traffic attainability has consistently changed. Finally webmasters are starting to understand the real benefit behind 'long tail' keywords for their sites.

So what are long tail keywords?

Long tail keywords are extensions of your main keyword past the top 20-30 in your results. For example if you run a keyword search for dogs, the first 20-30 most searched keywords are classified as the 'top keywords' and anything below that are our long tails.

The real benefit of long tail keywords lies in the amount of competition they have, or lack there of! You will notice that your top keywords are generally quite competitive and therefore require more advanced linking strategies to bring the page you are targeting to the top of the search engines. A page that targets a low competitive, long tail keyword however will be far easier to dominate in the search engines.

Ok so you're probably thinking, "why do I care about a keyword that only brings me a minimal amount of visitors, wouldn't it be better to get to the top of 'dogs' rather than 'dog training in New York'? Definitely! However that doesn't mean you can't create a bunch of pages that target all your low competitive, long tail keywords as well.

Let me put it into context for you. Let's say you have a page for dogs that you are constantly linking back too, in attempt to bring it to the top of the search engines. This of course may take months the gain enough links before Google, MSN or Yahoo believe you have enough to earn your place in their top 10.

What if at the same time you created a whole bunch of pages that were targeted towards your long tail keywords? The answer is you would be up sometimes in a matter of days. Now you may only get a couple of visitors a day to each particular page, but let's say you have 20 pages that all get 3 visitors a day. That's an extra 60 visitors daily to your site, and all you did was put up a few of pages.

Now this article's called "The Benefits of PLR Content for Long Tail Keywords" and for good reason. Now we've already found out the importance of utilizing long tails on your site, but what about getting those pages up?

Well the easiest thing to do would be to write an article, targeting the specific keyword and just throwing it up on your blog. Now I don't know about you, but it would take me a lot of time to write 20 articles on topics that I know nothing about. So how can you get around this? The answer is PLR content, which stands for private label rights content.

PLR content is content that you pay for the rights to use. Basically all this means is you pay for articles that someone else wrote, which you are allowed to put it up on your site without any reference to the author.

One of the best things about PLR content is that each article already targets a specific long tail keyword for the particular niches they are written about. This means perfect keyword density (number of times a keyword shows up on a page, 1-3% is ideal) and of course the keyword is found in the title.

Now all you have to do is submit the articles to your site (submitting articles twice a week is ideal for search engine spiders) and in no time you'll start see your traffic begin to increase progressively.

The main reason why PLR content is so idea for targeting long tail keywords is because the time it takes to write an article from scratch, or the cost to get a good quality article written, is far greater than spending the 10 minutes or so rewriting an existing PLR article for that keyword.

The first three keyword sets would probably be considered normal keywords, and the last three would be considered long tail keywords. Long tail keywords have several advantages, and some disadvantages:

Advantages: - Highly targeted traffic. If the user searched for that particular phrase, they are ready to buy, and know what they want. -A LOT cheaper bid prices. Not much competition on that keyword from other PPC users.

Disadvantages: - Less traffic coming from those keywords. - You have to come up with quite a few of these long tails to get much traffic on them.

Considering that you have a chance to drive highly targeted traffic to your website, while save a lot of money on your pay per click program, I would highly suggest getting started on long tail keywords.

The best tool I have found to start your long tail keyword list is Google Adword's Keyword Tool. Simply log into your Google Adsense account and click on Tools. This tool takes a given keyword, and gives you results that often contain many valuable long tail keywords. The results can show you how much search volume there is for that given keyword, and what the average cost per click will run.

Of course, you can also export this list, and use the same keywords in other pay per click campaigns ;-)

An Easy Way To Generate Tons Of Traffic In The Search Engines

You're always told to target the most common search terms and phrases in order to generate free traffic from the search engines. This is great if you have a lot of time to create vast amounts of targeted content that will ensure you a top ranking, or if you have a high enough budget to outbid your competitors using pay-per-click advertising.

If your site is fairly new, it will be next to impossible to get your website a top ranking in the search engines for most of the popular search terms. You will be facing tough competition from other websites that already have the top search terms dominated. So, unless you have a massive advertising budget, it's not worthwhile to target these terms - not at first.

Even if your site is somewhat established and you're receiving a fair amount of traffic from the popular search terms, there is a massive amount of untapped traffic you can generate to explode the number of visitors to your web pages...

The power of the long-tail!

The long-tail refers to a large numbers of keywords (and keyword phrases) that have smaller amounts of searches on the search engines. There are only a few popular keywords related to a particular niche that produce a high number of searches, but there are plenty of keywords and phrases related to the same niche that are searched for a fewer number of times (the long-tail).

There can be hundreds of keywords in any long tail (usually in the form of multiple word phrases) and if you add up the number of times each of these long-tail keywords are searched for, it can often be comparable to the amount of times a single popular keyword is searched for.

The best part about using long tail keywords is there is much less, if any, competition. So it's easy for you to dominate these terms in the search engines.

When you're creating web pages around long-tail keywords, don't try stuffing too many onto one page. Divide them into related sub-categories and create separate pages with content targeted towards only two or three keyword phrases at most.

If you have trouble writing this much content, you can hire a ghostwriter and ask them to write various articles, or content, for you that are each based around two or three long-tail keyword phrases.

Do not underestimate the amount of traffic keywords in the long-tail can generate for you. Remember, a large list of keywords that are searched for less frequently can generate just as much traffic as a small list of popular keywords.
