Looking for Organic Fabric Stores Online?

Finding Organic Fabric Stores online can be a bit challenging!

I get LOTS of enquiries from toy-makers looking for baby-safe and environmentally-friendly materials.I also get asked about WHERE to buy organic fabrics... Maybe, like me, you have been a bit bamboozled by all the organic-green-enviro-eco labels?... Although people are trying to to live more 'GREEN', making sense of all of this is enough to make one start to see... RED!

So I thought I 'd TRY and throw some light on the matter... (hopefully it's solar-powered, self-sustaining, and fluorescent light - ha!ha! : )

Organic versus Eco-Friendly

So what's it all about?

Ooh, before we get into it let me quickly introduce myself ->

I'm Pauline from Funky Friends Factory,
( a soft toy-designer and self-confessed fabric-a-holic!)

OKAY...
back to
untangling the mystery of
ORGANIC fabrics!

What is an ORGANIC Fabric???

organic cottonA simple way to look at it - ORGANIC FABRICS are made from things that grow - like cotton, flax, hemp, wool, suede and silk.

*** CERTIFIED ORGANIC textiles/fabrics are also grown without the use of chemicals, pesticides and other harmful materials. Turning the fibers into fabrics also follows a standard and is certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards).

...and what is NOT Organic Fabric!

synthetic or manmade textilesSYNTHETIC FABRICS are fabrics that are man-made, for example, manufactured textiles like polyester, lycra, spandex, acrylic, rayon and nylon.

: ) I looked it up! -->
* synthetic or synthesised = means to produce a new more complex substance/product.

What is an Eco Friendly Fabric???

ec0 ofriendlyEco Friendly Fabrics are fabrics that are beneficial to the environment.

These fabrics can be HARMLESS, or simply LESS harmful to the environment BUT may come from organic OR natural fibers!

The Difference?

confusedSome people think that ECO (FRIENDLY) and ORGANIC fabrics are the same, but there is really BIG difference!!!

Some Eco fabrics are not Organic, and can be made from recycled polyester which is definitely NOT organic!

Hopefully that's cleared things up a bit?
