How to Look Good at 50

"You are and look as old as you think and feel."

No one likes telling their true age. But the only way I can write this article is to confess that I am 50 years old.

Yes, that's me in the photo at my 50th birthday bash. I HAD SO MUCH FUN!!!!

I am writing this because I have met a lot of
50-year-olds who actually believe that they have to "look" 50, ...as if it's written in an instructional manual somewhere.

The truth is you can look any age you choose.

So, you may ask yourself how you can look good at 50; and I'm here to say,

"YOU ARE AND LOOK AS OLD AS YOU THINK AND FEEL!

while sitting at your desk

Okay, let's face it. People seem to think ladies with tight abs and butts are "hawt!" So I included this very simple exercise that everyone can do while sitting (especially all of you who work behind a desk all day). These simple movements can keep your muscles firm and tight so you can be proud of yourself when you put on that bikini.

For starters, tighten your buttcheeks while sitting in that chair; suck in your gut; sit up straight. (Now I sound like your mom.) But there are actually a lot of things you can do while sitting at your desk without drawing attention to yourself.

Try sitting tall with your abs sucked in then lift your left foot off the floor a few inches keeping your knee bent (remember to keep sucking in the abs). Hold for 5 seconds, lower and repeat for 16 reps. Repeat this exercise with the right leg. Always remember to keep your abs sucked in while doing your exercises! It's so easy to forget the abs and focus on lifting the legs.

If you have a lot of leg room underneath your desk or can swivel around and extend your leg, you will want to try this one. Sit tall with your abs sucked in, and extend your left leg until it's level with your hip, squeezing the quadriceps (thigh muscle group). Hold for 5 seconds, lower and repeat for 16 reps. Repeat this exercise with the right leg. Hold onto your seat if you need to.

*This one is my favorite. It is actually harder than it sounds. Sit at your desk and place your coffee cup (make sure it's empty) between your knees. You can also use a water bottle or rolled up sweater ... whatever you have on hand. Sit up tall with your abs sucked in (again with the abs). Raise your knees up a few inches off the floor while holding the cup between your knees. Hold for 5 seconds, lower and repeat for 16 reps. For balance you may have to hold onto your chair or desk (see image above). You get a great workout without leaving your desk! How cool is that!?

And always remember to

stand up every half hour to stretch or walk around a bit.

Get rid of stinkin' thinkin'

Your life is all about what you believe it to be, right? Of course, RIGHT! And if you didn't already know that, you know it now. So why don't you use that to your advantage? What a concept! So here's a little secret...

Believe that you are 21 years old!

I'm not saying "lie" to yourself. I am saying

BELIEVE it.
FEEL it.
THINK it.

You don't have to choose "21" as your age; you can pick any age that you remember feeling your best. I vividly remember being 21, so that is the age that I choose. And this is a photo of me (at 50) dancing with the 21 year olds!

You may not look 21 all of a sudden. But who cares? That's not the point.
The point is not looking 50! Begin telling yourself that you are your "new" age and remember how you felt at that age and feel it now. Very soon you will notice a change. Among other things, you will notice that your walk will be a little different. You will stand and sit differently. Your self-esteem will be greatly elevated. That's when others will begin to notice something "different" about you.

Practice being and feeling your "new" age. Start NOW.

The Truth About Abs

I'm not one for going to the gym so I never joined any type of formal training. One day I was watching my husband exercising in the living room and it looked so simple that I thought to myself, "I could do that."

The exercise program he was using is called The Truth About Abs. I started scrolling through the manual he had just purchased online and decided to jump straight to the starter program (level 1). Needless to say I liked it. Then I sat down and read the manual from the beginning and was really surprised that it was not just about ab exercises. There is very, very good nutritional information included. I already know a lot about what to eat and what not to eat, so the manual confirmed a lot of what I already knew, and I learned some useful new information.

This allowed me the freedom of exercising in the comfort of my own home dressed in my pajamas. The level one exercises were brain-dead simple and easy to do. I took notes from the manual to increase the difficulty a bit before moving on to level two. Right now I'm still on level two which consists of some level one exercises with a few more included. All I've noticed so far is that the little roll of flab is gone. lol

Sample Exercise

type=text

What works well for me is to just print from the manual the exercises that I will be working on at that moment. I carefully read through the steps before performing the exercise. Now I don't have to read them anymore since I know what I'm doing, but I still carry with me a list of the exercises in the order that I will do them. Once I get to the next level, I'll have to print the new exercises that I'm not familiar with.

Let me give you an example of one of my exercises that I do from this manual. I do this exercise a lot, and it is way more difficult than it appears. What I do is I position myself on my toes with my forearms on top of my stability ball. You will be AMAZED at how much balance this takes! I hold this position on the stability ball while I make very careful slight one-inch movements back and forth in every direction with my elbows. I try to hold this position for about a minute.

That's it!

Sounds easy, right? HA!

I'd like to see YOU try it!

You can get a quick download of your copy of The Truth About Abs by clicking the order button below. For me it is a very informative and fun manual to read, and you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy the exercises are to include in your everyday life.

And as your body begins to look better and better, it also becomes way easier to BELIEVE and FEEL your "new" age!

The BASIC Equipment

I don't have any fancy exercise equipment, but I did go online and purchase a few items that are sort of a bare necessity.

I will list what I have below. There are, of course, lots of equipment you can buy. I'm only listing the bare minimum for anyone getting started and who does not have a whole lot of room or belong to a gym.

Stability Ball

GoFit Ultimate Burst Resistant Core Stability Ball with Workout DVD
(65 cm)

To begin with, as I mentioned earlier, you gotta have a stability ball. I do a whole LOT of exercises with this ball, so I highly recommend that you get one ASAP. What's also cool is you can just order these things online! No more running down to a sports store to buy equipment. Most items are shipped within a couple of days, so you get your stuff pretty quick.

These balls are great to sit on while you're watching TV. I do this to continue strengthening my core muscles while I'm not exercising.

Hand Weights

Valeo HW5 5-Pound Neoprene Hand Weights

I use the 5lb hand weights (Neoprene).
You can get these in lighter or heavier weights depending on your preference. I find they have a nice feel to them.

Useful Tip! I discovered that when arm muscles are well defined, people automatically assume that the rest of your body is in great shape! And these little hand weights work well to keep the arms in shape.

These convenient weights are small enough to keep handy, and you can use them while you're sitting watching TV or reading a book.

PowerBlock Dumbell Set

PowerBlock Classic Adjustable 5 to 45-Pounds per Dumbbell Set

The PowerBlock Dumbell system is more advanced. I am only including it here because my husband uses these and he insisted that I add it to my list.

He loves this dumbell set because they take up very little room and he says they are very easy to adjust for whatever weight you want (the weight is expandable). He also says they are very sturdy. I see him use these for a lot of different exercises.

Ankle Weights

Valeo Adjustable Ankle/Wrist Weight

I go walking every day. I bought these ankle weights to add some resistance and strengthen my muscles as I walk. They work great. They don't seem like they're very heavy, but they work. I also have three flights of stairs that I walk up/down with these weights on. You can add the amount of weight you want to increase as you get stronger!

They're simple to strap on and use every day. I even wear them around the house. You can also put them on your wrists or buy two pairs and wear them on both your ankles and wrists. This gives you a workout without working out!

A Blurb About Dieting

I don't necessarily diet, but if you're one of those folks who is interested in a dieting plan, I took a look at about five popular diets out there and rated them for your convenience. If you're interested, you can peek at my reviews here.
