Looney Tunes Bugs Bunny

Bugs Bunny

Bugs Bunny of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies fame was, and still is, one of the most popular cartoon celebrities of all time. Known worldwide for his bold antics and his calm approach to the most chaotic situations, bugs bunny has caused audiences to cheer and laugh with him over and over again.

Bugs Bunny is certainly among cartoon royalty and rightfully so. With a rich history in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies families, the creation of this carrot-crunching entertainer is just as intriguing as any one of his animated appearances.

Looney Tunes Bugs Bunny

Created in 1940 by a team of great animators that included Tex Avery and Robert McKimson, Bugs Bunny burst onto the scene with cool catchphrases delivered with a unique blend of New York dialects. In the face of a hunter, often played by another tune celebrity Elmer Fudd, bent on making him prey, Bugs Bunny's offering of such sardonic phrases, like "What's up, Doc?" and "Ain't I a stinker?" each time he thwarts the hunter's plans are a part of Bugs Bunny's charm and appeal. That he munches on a carrot stick with, seemingly, not a care in the world solidifies his place as a one of the craftiest, coolest, cartoon characters of all time.

Bugs Bunny - A Wild Hare

Bugs bunny's almost constant carrot munching has become a part of his signature in much the same way the cigar is associated with Groucho Marx. Being one of the more popular celebrities of all time, Bugs also paid homage to Groucho Marx in using the witty catchphrase, "Of course you know, this means war!" used by Marx and his co-stars in the 1933 Marx Brothers comedy, Duck Soup, and in their 1935 hit, A Night at the Opera. In It Happened One Night, a 1934 film, Clark Gable can also be seen munching on a carrot. Drawing on elements such as this from such noted actors, helped shape the quick-witted personality of Bugs Bunny that continues to endear fans of all ages even today.

Bugs made his debut in Tex Avery's A wild Hare in 1940 and has been entertaining children of all ages ever since

Bug's Style

The genius of Bugs Bunny is owed, in part, to the animated styling of Max Hare, a similar character created by Charlie Thorson of Disney fame. Originally drawn by the artist, Bugs Hardaway, he was initially referred to as Bug's Bunny, which is a name that has stuck with him ever since with the apostrophe being dropped to make it official. So, although Bugs was created by Tex Avery and the rest of his animation team at Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, much of who he is actually owed to the influence of Walt Disney's creative staff.

Bugs Bunny Coloring Sheets

Bug's prototype was a rabbit that first appeared in Porky's Hare Hunt as early as 1938 starring none other than the infamous bunny hunting Porky Pig. Ben Hardaway and Cal Dalton co-directed the early short, which is also very similar in comparison to Tex Avery's 1937 creation, Porky's Duck Hunt where audiences were first introduced to another of Bugs Bunny's eventual arch enemies, Daffy Duck.

This early Bugs Bunny prototype thoroughly enjoyed the task of driving those that came to hunt him crazy as he twisted their schemes and traps in such ways that they had no affect on the rabbit, but backfired on each hunter, instead.

This sarcastic, fearless prankster earned such a place in the hearts of audiences early on that Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies staff members were encouraged to develop his character further, which signaled the birth of the unrivaled hare known today as Bugs Bunny. By this time, his personality was well crafted and his catchphrases perfectly timed. Also, by this time, Mel Blanc had perfected the New York accented speaking voice of Bugs Bunny, which is widely imitated when people reminisce on Bugs' character even today.

Bugs Bunny - Falling Hare

Just two short years later, World War II was in full effect and Bugs Bunny's popularity had grown exponentially. Now, the biggest star in the Merrie Melodies' line up of characters, Bugs Bunny's carefree, fearless attitude began to earn him greater acclaim. By 1943, he was receiving star billing in cartoons that pitted him against war enemies featuring Mussolini, Hitler and the Japanese, the latter of which has caused the 1944 cartoon to be discontinued from distribution because of heavy racial stereotyping.

Among Bugs Bunny's accomplishments during that era, he was awarded honorary ranking as a Marine Master Sergeant after donning a United States Marine Corp uniform in his infamous Super-Rabbit cartoon. Bugs was also adopted as the official mascot of the Kingman Army Air Field located in Kingman, Arizona where thousands of heroic aerial gunners, including Charles Bronson and Clark Gable, have received training. As cartoon legends go, Bugs Bunny has received recognition that few others, besides Disney's Mickey Mouse, have enjoyed.

Bugs And Who Framed Roger Rabbit

His fame has even earned him motion picture acclaim where his co-stars have included other celebrated cartoon characters including Mickey Mouse in Robert Zemeckis' 1988 runaway hit, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which is, incidentally, the last film in which the famed Mel Blanc would lend his voice to Bugs before his death in 1989. And Bugs played alongside legendary basketball player Michael Jordan in the 1996 film Space Jam. It was in this film fantasy that a very charismatic Bugs can be found convincing a reluctant Michael Jordan to return to the basketball court.

Bugs Bunny The Celebrity

Through the years, his celebrity has awarded him his own comic book series with both Dell and Gold Key Comics, and he has appeared in several comic books published by DC Comics, as well, including a four series issue in which Bugs Bunny appears with the infamous Superman hero.

He is the mascot for Warner Bros. Studios (who acquired Bugs when they acquired Tex Avery and the rest of his teammates in the 1930's) and is one of only two cartoon characters with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame (the only other character to share this honor is Disney's Mickey Mouse).

He was the first cartoon character to be featured on a U.S. Postal Stamp, which is still counted as number seven in the ten most popular American stamps collected. As cartoon characters go, few have enjoyed the stardom of the one and only Bugs Bunny.
