Looney Tunes Elmer Fudd

Elmer Fudd
Though his antics are often aimed at another fan favorite, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd has been making audiences of all ages laugh since his introduction in the 1940 Merrie Melodies classic, Elmer's Candid Camera.
For generations Fudd has entertained as he has appeared with Bugs, Daffy Duck and many of the other larger than life characters that Looney Tunes is known for.

Elmer Fudd Egghead
After several shorts, Egghead began to appear less frequently as a new character, Elmer Fudd, began to emerge. Fudd's nose was depicted as slightly smaller, but the style of clothing each character wore was strikingly similar.
Earlier features also depict Elmer Fudd as one who is quite fond of the pre Bugs Bunny prototypes and even adopts the rabbit as a pet before the two grow to become arch rivals. Eventually, episodes revolve around the blundering schemes of Elmer Fudd as he attempts to hunt a witty Bugs Bunny who outsmarts him every time.

Hunting Wabbits
Part of Elmer Fudd's charm has always been that, though he intends to hunt rabbits and the occasional duck, he appears harmless, dim-witted and even childlike at times.
Early on, Fudd's wacky speech pattern not only appeared to fit his scatterbrained personality, but audiences found amusement every time he had a funny speech impaired line to deliver. Because of this, writers deliberately gave him dialogue that would make comedic use of his impediment whenever possible.
Audiences are easily entertained by such scenes as the slow Fudd creeping through the forest with a double-barreled shotgun in hand as Bugs Bunny creeps up behind him munching on a carrot and casually asks his famed, "What's up, Doc?" question only for a clueless Elmer Fudd to reply that he is "hunting wabbits".
Elmer Fudd's Voice
Blanc performed the Elmer Fudd voice a second time in the 1958 hit Pre-Hysterical Hare as it has long been presumed Bryan did not provide the work because of the musician's union strike that same year. When Bryan died in 1959, Hal Smith began providing voiceover for Elmer Fudd. However, after three cartoon shorts Elmer Fudd was temporarily retired and it was Bryan's voice that stuck with audiences.
During the 70s and 80s Fudd began to resurface and Mel Blanc regularly resumed his voice over contributions in a series of new roles that included shorts, feature films and television specials. Between 1989 and the present, Fudd's voice has been dubbed by other artists, such as Jeff Bergman, Greg Burson, Billy West, Quinton Flynn, Noel Blanc (the son of Mel Blanc) and Chris Edgerly.
Looney Tunes Elmer Fudd
In 1994, What's Up Doc? was honored with the number 1 spot of the 50 greatest cartoons ever by 1000 members in the animation field. Other works in which Fudd was critically acclaimed include Rabbit of Sevile and Hunting Trilogy, which includes Rabbit Seasoning, Rabbit Fire, and Duck, Rabbit, Duck! In all of these Fudd is paired with the likes of Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck, which remain fellow superstars in the Looney Tunes ensemble.
Having appeared in multiple hit shorts since his 1940 debut, younger generations have also enjoyed Elmer Fudd in television specials throughout the 1970s and the 1980s and he had a cameo appearance in Steven Spielberg's 1988 hit Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
In 1996 he appeared as a team member of the TuneSquad in Space Jam. Fudd has appeared in The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries, has played an Acme Looniversity teacher in Tiny Toon Adventures, appeared in Duck Dodgers and has had cameo appearances on Animaniacs.
As one of the most memorable characters in cartoon history, Elmer Fudd continues to entertain, delight and offer audiences an opportunity to laugh every time his character graces the small or large screen.
