Looney Tunes Sylvester

Looney Tunes Sylvester is yet another star from the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies golden age. Often trying to capture Tweety Bird, always being outfoxed, Sylvester's character was pretty simple, he was a sloppy cat with a lisp.

Even though this sloppy kitty has appeared in countless cartoons and has made guest appearances in a few movies, he is most known for and most loved for his part in the Looney Tunes cartoons.

Life With Feathers

If you tried to recite the job history of Sylvester the Cat, you might find yourself to be limited with ideas and factual knowledge about his career.

Also known by Sylvester, Puddy Tat or Sylvester the Cat, Sylvester J. Pussycat, Sr. is a fictional character brought to life only through the cartoon world.

His first name of Sylvester, comes from "felis silvestris" which means wild cat species.

His character first came on the scene in 1945 on Friz Freleng's Life With Feathers.

Sylvester And Tweety Bird

It was not until 1947 that Freleng paired Sylvester up with Tweety on the cartoon Tweetie Pie.

Sylvester even got to star with Porky Pig, with that first pairing taking place in 1946 on Kitty Kornered. Back in the golden age, Sylvester the Cat has appeared in 96 cartoons, which is mighty impressive.

Because of all of this sudden fame, Sylvester found himself on TV Guide's Top 50 Best Cartoon Characters list. He was ranked with Tweety at the numbered spot of thirty-three.

Sufferin' Succotash !

Sylvester's trademark exclamation was and will forever be "Sufferin' succotash!"

This is also a cat that never gives up and shows a lot of self pride, even though he is generally portrayed as the "loser" of the Looney Tunes cartoon character hierarchy.

He has been referred to as the feline version of Wile E. Coyote, since they both tend to play the never ending, "cat and mice" game.

Conveniently enough, Sylvester has "died" more times than any of the other Looney Tunes characters. In fact, Sylvester has "died" in "Peck Up Your Troubles", "Back Alley Oproar", "Satan's Waitin", "Tweety's Circus", "I Taw a Putty Tat", "Rebel Without Claws", and "Tweet and Lovely".

Sylvester On The Big Screen

But the list of appearances for Sylvester the Cat does not stop there, he was also spotted in a Sylvester cartoon that appeared in the movie Kitten with a Whip.

In an episode of Robot Chicken called, "Werewolf VS Unicorn", Sylvester makes an appearance. He has also made appearances in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", "Space Jam", "Looney Tunes: Back in Action", "Family Guy", "Australia's Funniest Home Video Show", and on an episode of "Freakazoid".

As you can easily see, there is a lot to this cartoon cat that not many people know about. Most people know him strictly from Looney Tunes but his resume does not stop there. There are probably a good handful of people who already knew about the extensive career of the loveable Sylvester the Cat, but maybe not completely. There are probably a lot of things you did not know about the creation, the history, or the television appearances of Sylvester the Cat.

Ah, I absolutely loved Sylvester as a kid. Pretty weird eh? I also love Tom from Tom and Jerry. I always feel sorry for them that they get so beat up and get nothing for it.

Another great lens. I think "sufferin' succotash" is one of the most well-known lines!

I think poor old Sylvester is from the same mold as Wile E Coyote, those birds are just too dang sneaky for them both 5*

Sylvester was one of the most popular cartoon characters from my childhood.
