Taz - Devil May Hare

We have Robert McKimson to thank, who created Taz and based him around the real Tasmanian devil, and although their appearances differ, the main way Taz and the Australian marsupial resemble each other is their behaviour, which is a bit crazed and also a voracious appetite. Again Taz's appearance did not look just like the real-life Australian marsupial, but he did have other characteristics that were devil-like, such as the fur on his head was horn shaped. His motions were whirling around in dust, referred to as a dust devil, which resembles a tornado, complete with the sound effect of numerous motors working together. Taz is always hungry and looking for food, he eats everything in his path! This is what most of his cartoons are based on.

This hunger for food served as the inspiration for the Devil May Hare short that McKimson did. It first came out in June '54, and the storyline of this is that Taz keeps stalking Bugs Bunny, but his attempts fail, partially due to him not being able to speak clearly and he winds up merely being a nuisance to Bugs.

Bugs is smart and brings in a female Tasmanian Devil whose appetite equals Taz's.
Taz's voice was done by the talented Mel Blanc and once in awhile Taz says something that can be understood such as the line What for you bury me in the cold, cold ground.
Taz does however, show he has the ability to read and write.

Taz Gets The Axe ?

Shortly after this short, Devil May Hare, appeared in the theatres it was axed by the head of Warner Brothers animation, producer Eddie Selzer, who told McKimson that his character, Taz, was overly obnoxious, but this was soon overturned when Jack Warner stepped in and asked what was going on, and informed Eddie that a huge amount of fan mail had come in "boxes and boxes" saying that people loved the character.

Taz - Ducking The Devil

McKimson directed four other Taz cartoons including Bedevilled Rabbit (April 13, 1957), Ducking the Devil (released on August 17,1957), Bill of Hare (on June 9, 1962), and Dr. Devil and Mr. Hare (released March 28, 1964). The final appearance for this Tasmanian Devil for the original group of Warner Brothers writers, voice actors, and directors was The Fright Before Christmas segment of the Bug's Bunny Looney Christmas Tales where Taz winds up consuming a whole sleigh filled with presents.

More Looney tunes

After the animation studio for Warner Brothers was closed in 1964, people still loved watching the Tasmanian devil at the theatres and from this Taz got a new fan following through the Looney Tunes shorts going into syndication. Then during the 1980's and the beginning of the 1990's the character was now well known by the name Taz, as we know him now, and Warner Brothers marketed Taz to new levels of popularity. During the 1990's Taz appeared in many different cartoons and his character was included in the film Space Jam in 1996 where Taz appeared with numerous other looney tunes characters and also appeared in Looney Tunes Back in Action, which was a movie-length cartoon, in 2004.
