Looney Tunes Tweety Bird

Originally created by Bob Clampett and later developed by Friz Freling, Tweety was originally an undomesticated baby bird named Orson before the 1942 A Tale of Two Kitties short crafted him as the Tweety Bird known today.
Since his creation, Tweety's celebrity status has garnered him successful appearances in 48 different cartoons.

At his debut, Tweety was originally portrayed as a mostly featherless baby bird, which is how he remained for several more of his earlier roles until animators eventually added his widely recognizable yellow feathers.

A Tale Of Two Kitties

The feathers became a part of his makeover after censors and producers had the notion that he looked naked in his original design. Though Porky Pig never wore trousers and Bugs Bunny also appeared au natural, oddly enough, only Tweety was restyled to satisfy more modest tastes.

Loved for his sweet disposition, Tweety spends most of his time either in a nest or in a cage where he is affectionately cared for by his aging owner, Granny. In either scenario, Tweety frequently must rise to the task of outsmarting his would-be captor, co-star Sylvester, another star in his own right who has an insatiable appetite for a certain yellow canary.

In the tradition of other Mel Blanc characters, such as Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and Elmer Fudd, who are all challenged by speech impediments, Tweety Bird speaks with a heavy lisp. This endearing trait causes Tweety to refer to his pussycat nemesis as "puddy tat" or for terms like "sweetie pie" to be spoken as "tweetie pie", instead. Also like the others mentioned, Tweety Bird was given his own signature lines, "I tought I taw a puddy tat!" as well as, "I did, I did taw a puddy tat!" The former also resulted in a 1951 hit single composed by Mel Blanc with help from the Billy Mays orchestra.

Oscar For Tweety Bird

As he is very intelligent and able to almost effortlessly outsmart his opponents, Tweety Bird's attitude is often compared to that of Bugs Bunny, who also spoke with a similar voice as an infant in The Old Grey Hare.

Paired with a cat, who would eventually become Sylvester, in Tweetie Pie (1947) the duo would eventually win Warner Brothers it's very first Oscar award for Best Short Subject in the cartoon genre. The pairing of Sylvester and Tweety still stands as one of the most famous pairings in the history of animated shorts.

Tweety Bird And Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Starring on both small and large screens, Tweety was selected as one of several other Looney Tunes' characters to have a bit part in Stephen Spielberg's critically acclaimed Who Framed Roger Rabbit in 1988. Later, Tweety went on to star in The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries, Tweety's High-Flying Adventure, a PSA alerting parents to the dangers of scalding hot bath water, and a host of other TV specials and compilations.

In 2002, a younger version of Tweety Bird was premiered on the hit series Baby Looney Tunes, where a brand new generation of cartoon viewers could enjoy the same type of colorful antics portrayed by the original Tweety. This new creation, named Sweetie Pie, is even mentored in a few episodes of Tiny Toon Adventures by the original Tweety Bird much to the delight of audiences both young and old. Tweety also appears briefly in a Slappy Squirrel episode of Animaniacs, as well as enjoys a cameo appearance on The Warner's 65th Anniversary Special. He was a member of the Space Jam (1996) Tune Squad team, who retaliated against the Monstar bullies with his Ken po martial arts moves and Tweety also appears in the 2003 animated action film, Looney Tunes: Back in Action.

A popular fixture appearing in modern art and commercial products, Tweety Bird has appeared on posters, sneakers, lunchboxes and T-shirts. In 1998, with his co-star Sylvester, Tweety Bird was also featured on a United States postage stamp. His disarming innocence layered atop his ingenious schemes makes Tweety Bird a favorite character whose star is not likely to diminish any time soon.
