Affordable Faceted stones

Cut Amethysts

A range of stones for less than $25 (and sometimes less than $1) listed here for novice gemcutters who want to practice without breaking the bank. Round stones are probably the easiest shape to get started with.

Amethyst Cabochons

The purple stone

With a flat back and rounded top surface, cabochons often come in round or oval shapes. Other shapes, like rectangles or diamonds, can be found, but these are harder to locate settings for.

Cabochons are often larger than cut stones.

Bulk buys

While eBay may offer the best prices, supply can be erratic. You can also purchase Amethysts from Amazon at prices which make it suitable for beginners. They also offer bulk lots which can make it simpler to practice - get a set of stones and matching settings and if one breaks you can get the next one!

Green Amethyst

A rarer shade of Amethyst

As well as the deep purple it is known for, Amethyst also comes in green. These stones are rarer and usually bought from specialist gem traders. Slightly more expensive, these are still within the price range for some novice gemsetters.

The top-rated Amethysts

Expensive and exclusive

With prices over $500 or $1000, the rarest Amethysts have large size, a deep colour and translucency. These are not stones I would recommend for beginners!

Sometimes uncut stones come up. Since cutting gems is very different to setting them, these are not worth it for novices unless you know someone who can professionally cut it to get the best from the stone.
