A LOTR Fanart Gallery: Visions of Middle-earth
I have been an intermittent member of The Lord of the Rings Plaza, so a lot of these were made for that Tolkien fan community.
If anyone would like to post these images for non-commercial purposes, that's fine: just give me credit and a link back to this page. Thanks!
Tinw's Sketches and Doodles of Middle-earth
A gallery of my hand-drawn fanart. Unfortunately I'm a little shaky by hand.
This one came out well, however:

A few of these are very old from before or just after The Fellowship of the Ring came out. I was trying to capture my mental image of various characters from when I read the books. So there's a strange Elrond, a somewhat strange Legolas in this batch.
A Tribute Banner for Lothlórien
Tinw's "Elf-Magic" Drawings
My "Elf-magic" is a process called onionskinning. I put a faint photo or composite image on an underlying layer, paint over it, and hide the guide layer before saving the file.
Many of these drawings simulate ink on parchment. When I took over as editor of The Last Homely Herald, the newsletter of Imladris on the Lord of the Rings Fanatics Plaza, I redesigned the paper to make it look like an illuminated manuscript, the sort one might find in Elrond's library! So these drawings are tiny illuminations I created as decorative elements or illustrations for individual articles.
Be sure to check out the "Seluren" black and white portrait in the bottom row. It's the best I've managed so far, done over the course of a week because my arthritis can't handle that kind of detail work for many hours at a time!
Tolkien's Artwork
J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator
Amazon Price: $84.61 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
Did you know J.R.R. Tolkien did amazing watercolors, not to mention calligraphy? Part of this book focuses on his concept sketches and art for The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. The movies drew on his sketches of Dunharrow, the book in Gimli's Tomb, Minas Tirith, Rivendell, Cirith Ungol, Helm's Deep, the three trolls, Orthanc, and probably more sketches that I'm forgetting. This book also shows Tolkien's real-world paintings and drawings, as well as other creative work. The accompanying text gives us some wonderful insights into his life, the England that he loved, and of course Middle-earth.
Tinw's 3-D Lord of the Rings Fanart
These are rendered using various iterations of Bryce 3D. Some are from the mid-90s, with a very old machine that took hours to render! Most are about 5 years old.
Scroll: Elrond to His Sons

I made the background by photographing a hair stick with a piece of faux parchment wrapped around it, then fiddling with it in Photoshop it to create symmetrical corners and a seamless background. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of that hairstick, which I found lying on an archery range!
Houses of Gondolin Icons
Made for the Fall of Gondolin RPG on The Lord of the Rings Plaza. Each noble house in that Elven-city had an emblem; my graphics are based on descriptions of those emblems found in "The Fall of Gondolin," The Book of Lost Tales 2
House of the King (Turgon), House of the Wing (Tuor), House of the Mole (Maeglin), Morgoth, Thorondor
I realize King Turgon's was supposed to have a heart in the center, but Middle-earth is not our real world, and Elves were not liable to use our playing card heart-shape! Since Tolkien's Elves were so fond of jewels, I thought a stylized jewel-shape might work as a heart symbol.
House of the Golden Flower (Glorfindel), House of the Fountain (Ecthelion), House of the Tree (Galdor), House of the Swallow (Duilin), House of the Heavenly Arch (Egalmoth)
House of the Tower of Snow (Penlod), House of the Hammer of Wrath (Rog), House of the Pillar (Penlod), House of the Harp (Salgant bore gold; his followers silver)
The Fall of Gondolin: Original Source
The Book of Lost Tales, Part Two (The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 2)
Amazon Price: $2.98 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
"The Fall of Gondolin" is one of the earliest Middle-earth stories Tolkien ever wrote. It remains my favorite -- in some ways even more than The Lord of the Rings. He wrote it while convalescing from wounds sustained in the trenches in World War I. It seems he's reaching for myth to shield himself against the horrors of what he'd been through: in Middle-earth, the fight is not pointless, and the battles are heroic and magical. "The Fall of Gondolin" is only one chapter in Book of Lost Tales, which includes many stories about Middle-earth written years before Tolkien wrote LOTR.
