Lord Peter Wimsey - Aristocrat and Sleuth

Lord Peter Death Bredon Wimsey, creation of Dorothy L. Sayers, first appeared in print in 'Whose Body' in 1923.

about Lord Peter Wimsey

His character and history

Peter Wimsey attended Eton and Balliol Colleges, gaining a First in History before the Great War. He was commissioned and served in France where the Intelligence Service made use of his talents for observation and ratiocination, and left the army with the rank of Major. He suffered memory lapses and indecisiveness for a while; with the recovery of the Attenbury Emeralds, a new career was born.

Wimsey uses his effete appearance to good advantage when investigating; he gives the impression of a silly-ass and often learns what the police cannot.
However, his foolish looks hide a very sharp intellect. He is an accomplished pianist and knowledgeable about music; he played first-class cricket for Balliol and rides well. He is witty and erudite; he quotes Shakespeare, Donne, Milton, Shelley, Keats, Byron, Kai Lung, Tennyson and many others with ease. He is also well-tailored and possessed of a fast Daimler...

Lord Peter Wimsey quotations

Peter Wimsey on himself:

"I measured it with my stick - the gentleman-scout's vade-mecum, I call it - it's marked off in inches. Uncommonly handy companion at times. There's a sword inside and a compass in the head. Got it made specially."
~Whose Body?

"When I die you will find "Efficiency" written on my heart."
~Strong Poison

"Oh, God! Shall I ever live down this disastrous reputation for tomfoolery?"
~Strong Poison

Peter Wimsey on others:

"You cannot trust these young women. No fixity of purpose. Except, of course, when you particularly want them to be yielding."
~Murder Must Advertise

"Everyone suspects an eager desire too curry favor, but rudeness, for some reason, is always accepted as a guarantee of good faith."
~Murder Must Advertise

Harriet Vane on Peter Wimsey:

"If anyone ever marries you, it will be for the pleasure of hearing you talk piffle."
~Strong Poison

Others on Peter Wimsey:

"Tow-coloured, supercilious-looking blighter... Cross between Ralph Lynn and Bertie Wooster."
~Murder Must Advertise
