Los Angeles Seafood Restaurants through History
While the history of seafood restaurants in Los Angeles is not well documented, you can rest assured that many have been there for some time. One of the oldest seafood restaurants in Los Angeles is The Galley. This LA seafood restaurant was established in 1934. In the early days of Los Angeles, most restaurants that served seafood also served steaks and other dishes as well. Seafood was just an added attraction, not the main feature. Now things of course are different.
The other way to get seafood in the early days was to visit a seafood market. A lot of residents would catch some of their own seafood as well as buying from other fishermen, so they always had fresh seafood. As time went on, some of these markets also started cooking some seafood for customers. Steamed clams, crabs, and shrimp were simple to make. Some started frying fish and chips too and that caught on.
Today, it is much more common to have restaurants that specialize in seafood. From topnotch sushi restaurants to elegant seafood houses, you have plenty to choose from. If you have a limited budget, there are plenty of less pretentious places where you can enjoy a fresh bowl of chowder or a steamed crab fresh from the ocean.
Eating on the Pier
One of the best ways to enjoy a casual seafood meal is to visit one of the many seafood markets or restaurants found on the piers. They often have specials available on their crab, clams, or lobster tails. Most seafood is still sold by the pound, even if they cook it for you, so you may end up paying quite a bit for a 2 or 3 pound lobster tail, but then again, it might be well worth it to eat it fresh on the beach. Try the local catch or ask what is a popular choice. Many will also fry up some of your favorite fish filets for you if you ask.
Seafood Offers Variety
When you go looking for Los Angeles seafood, you will find quite a variety to choose from. You will have to decide between fish and shellfish, as well as how you want them cooked. Are you up to this challenge?
You will find Dungeness and Spider crab in many places. Rock crab may also be available. Each is slightly different from the other.
