Preview

As evidenced by the demolition of their respective opponents in division series sweeps, The Dodgers and Phillies move on to the NLCS on a roll. Each team playing very well under calm, experienced managers.

Maybe not much to be learned from the regular season series as the Dodgers and Phillies each swept four-game series from the other in August. Historically it's the fourth time they have played in the National League Championship Series, but only the first time since 1983.

It seems the Dodgers who led the NL in ERA and posted a 3.15 ERA in September have an edge at the pitching position. They held the Cubs, the highest-scoring team in the NL, to a meagre six runs in three games in the NLDS. Derek Lowe enters the NLCS on a nice roll after a commanding performance against the Cubs.The No. 2 starter Chad Billingsley is still underrated but is a definite force, and Hiroki Kuroda was clutch in the clincher against the Cubs in Game 3. Plus, he started twice against the Phillies this season, allowing only four hits, two runs and two walks with 12 strikeouts in 13 innings. The Dodgers' bullpen is very solid and deep.

Cole Hamels could be the wild-card here after baffling the Brewers with his frustrating changeups. If he can continue his masterful control and mix of pitches he might just get 2 starts in the series and if it goes the distance, maybe 3 starts?

Even with Manny considered you've got to give the hitting edge to Philly as they scored 799 runs this season, second only to the Cubs in the NL. They have three players with devasating power in Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins, and not far behind are Pat Burrell with 33 home runs and Jayson Werth at 24.

The Philadelphia offence is streaky though and struggled with consistency this year. But they did score 43 runs in eight games against the Dodgers this season. Philly fans are praying the bats don't turn cold at this crucial time.

An important factor in this series will likely be Dodger SS Rafael Furcal. Before getting injured May 5, he was leading the team in hitting at .366, scorching the base paths and playing stellar defense. Being sidelined for so long has hurt Furcal but against the Cubs his speed was evident when he extended a crucial inning with a two-out bunt. He also went 4-for-12 with three walks in the series, and his speed on the bases gives the Dodgers another weapon. Also reinserting him as leadoff hitter, means Matt Kemp and Russell Martin can be used further down the lineup with more RBI potential.

To me the biggest talking point in this series is the Man-Ram factor simply because his attitude has relaxed everyone and his presence in the batting order gives guys like Russell and Kemp more quality pitches.
