For something that is surprisingly simple in theory, diet is by far our GREATEST CHALLENGE when it comes to consistency and success with losing weight. We have very strong feelings associated with the food we eat and how we eat it. However, successful weight loss almost always involves a strict dietary shift.

It's important to follow a healthy eating plan that meets all of your nutritional requirements and also leaves you feeling satisfied and not deprived. It is equally important to follow a diet that not only works to take the weight off yet is one that you can live with long term.

Here are some tips to get started:

  • Start the day off with 8-16 oz. of water. Add a tablespoon of lemon or lime juice and repeat at 2 hour intervals throughout the day.

  • Limit simple carbs and increase complex carbs. Eliminate sugar, juice, soda, white rice, potatoes, and increase fruits and veggies. Eat one third to one half of your daily intake as raw vegetables and fruits (eat more vegetables than fruits).

  • Add a lean protein to all meals and snacks and eat every 3-5 hours. For example, wild caught fish (salmon, tuna, halibut, shrimp), lean meats (poultry, grass fed beef, ground turkey), eggs, and protein drinks. Never starve yourself or deprive yourself of nutrition.

  • Include healthy dietary fats. Good fats are a necessary component of any weight loss effort. Not eating the correct fats will actually slow your progress. Some good sources of healthy fat are olive oil, flax seed, avocado, almonds, and fish, to name just a few.

  • Eliminate all processed foods. Avoid fast foods, sodas, and artificial everything. Processed foods are genetically modified chemical concoctions that prevent your body from functioning optimally and cause obesity & disease.

  • Eat only whole foods. Whole foods are foods in their natural, unaltered state. Be mindful about what you put into your body; realize that many diseases are linked in some way to poor food consumption.

STEP 3: The Best Cardio To Lose Weight

INCLINE/INTERVAL CARDIO

los-10-poundsDepending on your weight loss goals and your fitness level you should be doing cardio anywhere from 3-5 times per week for a period of 15-30 minutes per session.

Why is cardio important for fast weight loss?
Cardio increases your metabolism and fires up your fat burn by elevating your heart rate and increasing blood flow.

What is incline/interval cardio?
Put a spin on your cardio by incorporating INCLINE and INTERVAL into your aerobic workout. Incline/interval cardio is a form of HIIT (high intensity interval training) with the added element of incline. The sessions are short bursts of high intensity cardio performed on an incline and alternated with slow to medium intensity cardio. For example, sprinting for 20 seconds on an incline followed by jogging or walking for 10 seconds. The entire workout is usually short in duration (10-20 minutes) with a warm up and cool down period. Incline and interval cardio will burn the most calories in the shortest amount of time and yet use the most muscle groups. Using this method takes less than half of the amount of time that regular cardio takes yet reduces the number and duration of your workouts.

You can apply the incline & interval technique to just about any cardio exercise. Here are some examples:

  • walking, running, hiking, hill climbing and running stairs

  • treadmill runs

  • stair stepper sessions

  • elliptical machine work outs

  • step-up sets using a bench or chair

By combining INTERVAL and INCLINE to your aerobic activity, you will be burning fat for hours after your workout is over.

STEP 4: The Most Effective Strength Training For Weight Loss

Build muscle, increase your metabolism, and burn fat with CIRCUIT TRAINING only 10-20 minutes 2 to 3 times weekly.

How does strength training work to accelerate fat loss?
Active muscle burns calories. As we age we lose up to five pounds of muscle in a decade and we burn fewer calories on a daily basis. Yet most of us continue to eat as we always have. It only makes sense that the older we get the more weight we gain. Strength training helps promote fat loss and prevent weight gain by replacing lost muscle, increasing our metabolism, and increasing calorie burn.

What is circuit training?
Circuit training is simply strength training with an added aerobic benefit. Circuit training is fast and focused and there is no resting between sets (exercises). A good example of circuit training using only your body weight would be plyometrics (like P90X). A good example of circuit training using free weights would be lifting with dumbbells or a kettlebell training workout. Circuit training produces the same metabolic effects that interval cardio does. It can elevate fat burn for up to 16 hours after your workout has been completed. Circuit training is another SMART way to get the maximum amount of fat burn within the shortest amount of time.

    I am training for a marathon and know that the more weight I lose the better I'll do the race. Carrying forty extra pounds only makes running harder. Great lens. Good ideas.
