Ok, first thing's first...we need to do a quick overview of the importance of proper nutrition in a weight loss program. I cover this in nearly every health and fitness article I write because it is, without a doubt, the most important part of any health and fitness program. Without proper nutrition you will never see maximum results!

This is also the most difficult part for most people because many have developed poor nutritional habits that are hard to break. You're probably asking yourself, "Ok, nutrition is important, but what the heck do I eat?!"

Don't worry...I'll get to that!

But first, you must understand a few guidelines that will help you get your daily nutrition in line.

Guideline #1: Eat 4-6 small meals a day

It has been shown that people who add a couple snacks throughout the day burned more fat, gained muscle mass, and had better energy levels.

The reasoning for this is simple. By going hours and hours without eating you are wreaking havoc on your metabolism. During those long hours between meals your metabolism drops and you are burning fewer calories than if you eat something every 2-3 hours. In addition, by going 5 hours without food you are much more likely to overeat and eat junk food...not a good thing when you're trying to lose weight!

Guideline #2: Cut the soda!

This is an easy one. Soda is full of high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and not much else. In other words...empty calories! One 20 oz cola weighs in at a whopping 239 calories! Sure, that soda may satisfy a craving, but only shortly and you'll be hungry again in no time. One soda here and there is ok, but you can cut out nearly 1,500 calories a week if you have one 20oz soda a week instead of one a day!

Guideline #3: Cheat!

This is pretty much the only time I condone cheating. Take one meal a weak and eat anything your heart desires! This should take care of those cravings you get and keep you on track the rest of the time. I always say, "What's the point of living healthy if I can't do and eat the things I enjoy?"

There is also a benefit to having a high calorie day once in awhile. It will actually give your metabolism a boost!

As long as you stick to your plan for every other meal during the week you can reward yourself with a little gluttony!

Here we go! If you incorporate these foods into each of your meals throughout the day you will keep your metabolism up, stomach satiated, cravings curbed, and muscles fed!

Pick 2-3 for each meal. By combining these throughout the day you will ensure that you're giving your body the nutrients it needs to run efficiently and burn fat!

Superfood #1: Nuts

Nuts such as almond, walnuts, and peanuts are loaded with protein, fiber, monounsaturated fats (good fats), and vitamin E. They help build muscle and curb cravings by keeping you full, longer. A handful a day is all you need!

Superfood #2: Eggs

Eggs often get a bad wrap because of the amount of cholesterol in the yolks, but this can be solved by removing some of the yolk. Eggs are loaded with super-high quality protein and vitamin A. They keep you full longer and help build muscle.

Superfood #3: Lean meats and Fish

Turkey, chicken, lean beef, and fish are the go-to's. They are loaded with protein, creatine, omega-3s (fish), iron, zinc, and B12. Meats are where we get most of our dietary protein, but the fatty versions can get us into trouble. These lean versions pack the protein punch without the fatty calories.

I'm not going to get into how it does it...just know that it does!

Black beans, kidney beans, lima beans, pinto beans, and garbanzo beans are just a few of the beans you should include in your diet.

Superfood #7: Whole Grains and Oatmeal

Whole grain bread, cereals, and oatmeal contain fiber, protein, complex carbohydrates and numerous essential minerals. They are perfect for breakfast as the complex carbohydrates provide sustained energy to get you through the morning. They also aid in reducing cholesterol and control your blood sugar levels so you don't crash in the middle of the day. In addition, they fight heart disease, diabetes, and colon cancer.

You need 25-35 grams of fiber daily and these foods will help you get there!

Stay away from breads, cereals, and oatmeal with added sugar or high fructose corn syrup! Also, only buy products that say Whole-grain or Whole-Wheat! Products that say "wheat bread" are often just colored to look like wheat bread and use highly refined ingredients which have been stripped away of their nutritious ingredients!

Superfood #8: Olive Oil (or Canola Oil, Peanut Oil)

These oils contain high quality fat which help control your food cravings and raise your good cholesterol. In addition to the monounsaturated fat they also contain vitamin E which helps boost the immune system. These oils help fight heart disease, cancer, and high blood pressure.

Superfood #9: Berries (and other fruits)

Berries are the superfood! Packed with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin c, berries fight against cancer, obesity, and heart disease. The benefits of berries and other fruits are almost endless. They are relatively low calorie and pack a nutritious punch!
