Way back in the day during the time of our ancient hunter/gatherer ancestors, times were tough. Sometimes the men would go out and kill a big old mammoth and there would be tons of food to eat.

Other times, the hunts were unsuccessful, the berries were out of season and there just wasn't any food to be had. Our ancestors' bodies adjusted and evolved to deal with these times of feast and famine.

When the food was plentiful, their bodies would store all of the calories that they could as fat. Then, when a time of famine hit, their bodies would use the stored fat and calories to keep them alive until they had food again.

Their bodies never knew how long a period of famine would last or when the next feast would come, so they burned only the minimal amount of fat during times of famine that was required to keep people alive, and clung on to the rest of the stored fat so they could ration it out over the whole period of the famine.

Let's fast forward back to modern times. We live in a world where food is plentiful. All you have to do is run out to the store and you can buy whatever you want to eat.

Here's the problem, though. Somewhere along the way our bodies never got the message. Our metabolisms still run on the "feast or famine" mentality. If you suddenly cut way back on the calories you are eating, your body jumps into "famine" mode. That means that it desperately clings onto whatever fat you have stored in your body burning only the bare minimum in an effort to keep you alive during the time of famine.

Hey, it's nice of our metabolisms to try to protect us like that, but it really stinks when you are trying to lose belly fat.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could just sit down and have a talk with your metabolism and tell it that it shouldn't worry about you and that you aren't going to starve to death just because you cut back on your calories?

Unfortunately, we can't do that, so instead, we have to resort to tricking our metabolisms into believing that we aren't going to starve and that it's OK for them to burn the fat we have stored on our bodies.

Why Losing Belly Fast is Tougher for Women than For Men

OK, ladies. We all know some man who has gone on a diet and has lost weight like crazy without even seeming to have to try. Frustrating, isn't it? There are several reasons why men have an easier time losing belly fat than women.

The first reason goes back to the times of feast and famine again. Regardless of whether or not you plan to have children, because you are a woman, your body is designed to get pregnant. Men don't have to carry children, so their bodies don't hold onto the extra fat as hard as a woman's body does, which is partly why men have an easier time losing their belly fat than women do.

The other reason why men can lose belly fat (or any fat) more easily than women comes down to basic anatomy. Muscle mass burns fat, meaning that the more muscle mass you have in your body the more calories you will burn while you are just sitting around doing nothing.

Men naturally have more muscle mass than women, and they are able to build muscle mass more quickly than a woman can. That means that they burn more fat with less effort than a woman.

So now that you know why your body makes it so tough on you to lose belly fat, it's easy to see what you have to do to actually lose the fat.
