So many people go wrong here. Forget fad diets, forget starvation. Slow and steady wins the race. Try changing one thing about your diet. Limit yourself to one soda a day. Stop skipping meals. Kids Imperfect at Keeping Weight Off
Heavy children who lost weight kept the pounds off better through weight maintenance follow-up, but even that wasn't terribly successful over two years, researchers reported.The less-than-perfect results underscore the challenge in fighting the nation's obesity epidemic. About 34 percent of American children are overweight.
A team led by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that obese children who lost weight kept it off if they were in a maintenance program, but its effectiveness waned over time.
The research involving 150 overweight 7- to 12-year-olds is one of the first large-scale studies to evaluate the long-term effects of weight-loss maintenance strategies in children.
The study, which appeared in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association, also is the first to look at whether heavy kids benefited from being encouraged to play with more physically active peers, cope with teasing, and develop an improved body image.
"We know from the adult field that the biggest challenge is not losing weight - it's keeping it off in the long term," said lead author Denise Wilfley, who heads the weight management program at Washington University.
Kids face the same struggle, she said.

Social Support Can Help Kids Maintain Weight Loss
A study that appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association this week, states that overweight kids who lose weight, have a harder time keeping it off if they don't have follow-up weight management support. Scientists studied 204 kids, ages 7-12, who were overweight.The kids took part in 5 months of weight loss treatments The kids and their families learned weight loss skills. At the end of the five months, 150 kids were split into one of three groups. The control group continued on their own with their families, applying what they learned during the five months. The behavioral skills maintenance (BSM) group had continued educational support, and the social facilitation maintenance (SFM) group had social and peer support to help them maintain their weightloss efforts.
Both the BSM and the SFM groups of kids maintained their weight loss longer than the control group. The SFM kids kept the weight off the longest.
Obese people most affected by gullet cancer
The paper speculates that obesity triggers an increase in levels of insulin and this in turn boosts the production of another hormone called insulin-like growth factor.
These hormones are known to stimulate cell proliferation and inhibit a process called apoptosis, in which a faulty cell is prompted to commit suicide. Both conditions favour cancer development.
However, only further research will say whether this theory or rival hypotheses is right, say the authors, led by David Whiteman, a professor at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Brisbane.
BMI is calculated by taking one's weight in kilograms and dividing it by the square of the height in metres.
People who are overweight have a BMI of between 25 and 30, while beyond 30 is considered obese. A BMI of 40 and above is considered extreme obesity, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) definitions.

Fitness Instructor Edith Aboul-hosn's Wednesday night class at Lady of America gym on West Coast Highway in Newport Beach seems like a run-of-the mill workout class as women arrive in shorts and tank tops and begin stretching.But all that changes when Aboul-hosn dims the lights and her students whip out pairs of platform stiletto heels from their gym bags.
The women practice twirls, spins and flipping upside down on two portable metal poles pushed to the center of the room to the beat of Justin Timberlake and Daft Punk.
"I'm addicted," said student Melissa DeVito, who has been taking classes from Aboul-hosn for the past two months. "It's given me more confidence, I've lost five pounds, and I've got more upper-body strength."
The class is more about fitness than sex, Aboul-hosn said. High heels help tone the leg muscles. Spinning on the pole improves upper body strength.
Pole dancing has come out of the gentlemen's clubs and twirled its way into gyms nationwide as a new type of workout.
As many as seven gyms in Costa Mesa alone offer pole dancing classes, said Keith Scheinberg, chief executive of Platinum Stages, a Newport Beach-based company that supplies portable dance poles to nightclubs and homemakers who want to get in shape.

The study of more than 2,500 adolescents over five years reinforced several things that doctors have found among their patients - particularly that destructive behaviors such as vomiting or abusing laxatives are prevalent among overweight teens as well as their too-thin peers, and that body attitudes and perceptions can play a big role in future weight problems.
"This is obviously of concern," Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, lead author of the study at the University of Minnesota, said of the risky behaviors. "We know that these behaviors tend to actually increase weight gain over time. It points to a need to address these behaviors with ... overweight kids."

Besides, it is a few steps away from a private school attended by the couple's eldest child Maddox.
There should be plenty of room for Pitt and Jolie and their four kids in the new apartment whose total area is approximately 6,000 square foot. The apartment features five bedrooms, six baths, a dining area, and a terrace with a terrific view. The residents can enjoy a variety of perks including room service, twice-daily maid service plus round-the-clock security. The Waldorf Towers security personnel have repeatedly proven their efficiency when it comes to scaring paparazzi off the Towers' celebrity guests including leaders of the free world and members of the royalty, The New York Post reports.
The famous couple has to pay a pretty penny - $100,000 a month - for renting their luxury pad at the Waldorf Towers. The apartment chosen by Pitt and Jolie is the most expensive one among 30 penthouse apartments at the residence. "It's actually grander than the Towers' Presidential Suite," one broker said.
On the downside, Pitt may find it a bit tough to forgo his casual clothes in exchange for living at the Waldorf Towers. The star has a penchant for T-shirts and jeans. Still, if it can help people lose weight, should it? Sure, patients taking it might end up thin, but they won't necessarily be healthy -- their hearts may still compromised, they'll still be at a higher risk for many diseases, and chances are they'll still have unhealthy diets and little to no exercise. Soya drink helpful for reducing fat in aged women
Postmenopausal women who drank the shake put on less fat around the abdomen, which has been linked to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Dr Daniel Christie, from the University of Alabama, presented his findings at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference in Washington DC. He said the aim of the research was to discover if soya reduced the fat women put on all over their bodies or just around their abdomens.

Individuals not to blame for obesity
The largest ever UK study into obesity, backed by government and compiled by 250 experts, said excess weight was now the norm in our "obesogenic" society.
Dramatic and comprehensive action was required to stop the majority of us becoming obese by 2050, they said.
But the authors admitted proof that any anti-obesity policy works "was scant".
Nonetheless every level of society, from individual to the upper echelons of government, must become involved in the campaign against a condition which carries such great social and economic consequences, they said.
In 2002, those who were overweight or obese cost nearly £7bn in treatment and state benefits and in indirect costs such as loss of earnings and reduced productivity.
In 40 years time, that figure could reach nearly £46bn, as health services struggle to cope with the ill health such as type 2 diabetes, cancer and stroke which can be associated with excess weight.
"There is a danger that the moment to act radically and dramatically will be missed," said Sir David King, the government's chief scientific advisor and head of the Foresight Programme which drew up the report.
"It is a problem that is getting worse every year."

Half an hour was allocated for his age group to have their lunch, we queued for 20 minutes and had to eat quickly to finish in time for the children to get to lessons. The food was lukewarm, tasted OK but after school my child (8 yr old) was violently ill all evening, presumably from eating lukewarm fish fingers. I had something different so was ok, but am aware that food should be kept hot not warm.

Obesity is not going to be tackled by reducing fat in school meals - children need the calories contained within the meal for energy for the day - they only have one meal at school and two at home (plus snacks), so regulating the school meal calorie quota is likely to do little for obesity, while depriving the less well nourished children of much needed nutrition. I don't think anyone is saying that meals were good before - but it is simply the standard of the food that needs to be improved. Perhaps it is the parents who should be the target for nutrition and cookery lessons - after all, they could then be preparing more healthy meals for their children, and passing on the knowledge.

If one can read, then one can read a cookery book.! It is the duty of every parent to ensure that their children are learning by example. If the UK is to avoid the obesity rates prevalent in the US, the government has to take urgent action against the fast food companies and food processors. Trans fats should be banned, and limits placed on the salt, sugar and fat content of processed foods. More effort should be made to help children to walk or cycle to school, and to educate their parents on the dangers of obesity. The risks arising from obesity outweigh the falsely perceived risks of children walking to school.

I have noticed in the school where I work that although the school meals are healthier and there is greater variety, the food tends to be of flavours and textures that would appeal more to adults. In addition, there are some strange ideas like slices of bread are available but no butter/margarine is allowed, potatoes are available but with absolutely no seasoning. Due to the absence of salt in the food, the caterers are including spices in the main courses, leaving no choice for children who don't like it. It seems we have gone to the opposite extreme. My daughter tried having a cooked school lunch but hated it so much, I have had to go back to the annoying routine of making her a packed lunch!

Jane West wins national award for losing 8 stones
Two-and-a-half years ago, Jane weighed 18st and suffered from lupus, vein inflammation and high blood pressure.
The once-fit career woman, who enjoyed sailing, could hardly stand up and had to leave her job.
The 32-year-old has now qualified as a personal trainer and has learnt to dive.

She is studying for a qualification in sailing and hopes to move to Australia.

Extra weight equals more disease and more expense
The 35 percent of upstate New York adults who are overweight face an extra $247 in annual extra medical expenditures compared to healthy-weight adults, on average. Another 26 percent of adults, classified as obese, have $732 in excess medical costs compared to adults of healthy weights. The percentages don't add up exactly because they are rounded.
In the six-county Rochester region, the excess weight carried by 464,000 people totals $204 million in extra health costs. For the 39-county upstate region, the extra health costs related to extra weight added up to $1.1 billion in 2006.

High glycemic index foods include refined grains such as white bread, white rice, corn flakes and baked potatoes. Many studies have been done to look at the correlation between eating foods with high or low glycemic indices and their effects on individual's Body Mass Index (BMI).

This meta-analysis study, or "study of other studies", from the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that whole-grain intake is generally inversely associated with BMI; refined grain intake is not. So, the higher the intake of carbohydrates from whole grains in the diet, the lower the body mass index of an individual. It also found that because overall dietary quality tends to be higher for high-carbohydrate diets, a low-fat dietary strategy with emphasis on fiber-rich carbohydrates, particularly cereal fiber, may be beneficial for health and weight control. It cannot be said that high GI/GL diets are necessarily bad for you, since many studies have conflicting findings, but it can definitely be concluded that low GI carbohydrates are good for you. Intake of high fiber, whole grain carbohydrate diets do correlate with better weight control, lower risk for weight related diseases and increased vitamin and mineral intake.
Now that you have the information you need, get out there and get into carbs! A diet high in whole fiber should be packed with fruits, veggies and whole grain breads to give you the energy to get you through the day feeling full and snacking less on unhealthy foods. Don't let anyone tell you a high carbohydrate diet is bad for you again--simply explain the benefits that all carbs have to offer and show them just how healthy they, too, can be!

Lawrence is a Stanford and Harvard educated physician and diet doctor who has been reviewing celebrity diets and celebrity weight loss and gain. On his Celebrity Diet Doctor website, Lawrence says that after reviewing celebrities and their diets for a year, he decided to put together 2007's best and worst celebrity diets list. In doing so, he opines that celebrity diets prove the saying "you are what you eat."
The top four celebrities on Lawrence's best and worst celebrity diets list are Ricki Lake, Lenny Clarke, Andrea Baptiste and Jessica Simpson. For these celebrities, says Lawrence, "it's all about healthy lifestyle activities," including walking, hiking and biking.
Ricki Lake reached an all-time high of 250 pounds in 1991; in 2007 she weighs in at 123. During her weight loss journey, Lake hiked every day, ate limited calories by utilizing a food preparation and delivery service and frequently faced the scale.
Lenny Clark followed the Weight Watchers program, along with a diet of salads, fresh fruit and fish, to drop 144 pounds. His activities included swimming and biking.
Andrea Baptiste lost 56 pounds on The Biggest Loser. Since her participation on the program, she has continued to drop weight by walking and running, coupled with a low fat and low refined-carb diet.

New Weight Loss Device
We put food on our plate, portion size is calculated, then we tell the computer how hungry we are. Every two minutes it asks again and if the food goes off the plate too fast the computer says slow down.
The device is training the brain to think about eating slower and feeling full quicker. With suggestions like chew and swallow before cutting another piece. It's not available in the states yet but researchers say we can slow down on our own which may just keep the pounds off.
Somerset Hospital offers weight-loss surgery
"I was tired of yo-yo diets," she said. "I had GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), tendon problems, degenerative discs and sleep apnea. I've been trying to get weight-loss surgery for two years, but insurance denied it at first."
The 53-year-old housewife weighed 232 pounds in July when she underwent gastric bypass surgery at Somerset Hospital. She now weighs 182 and her goal is 150.
"I no longer need an oxygen tank at night and I don't have heartburn anymore," she said. "I look so different, when I went in for my three-month checkup, Dr. Pradhan didn't recognize me."
Dr. Kumuda Pradhan performed the surgery. She was his first gastric bypass patient at Somerset Hospital, but he performed more than 120 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., where he completed his fellowship in bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgery. He is board certified.
The Department of Health approved Somerset Hospital for gastric bypass surgery, Greg Chiappelli, director of corporate communications, said.
"It's the beginning of good things here," he said.
People undergoing weight-loss surgery must have a body mass index of at least 35, if they have other medical conditions, and 40 if they don't, Pradhan said. The other medical conditions could be type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. They must be at least 18.
Molecule could hold key to dramatic weight loss
Researchers from St Vincent's Hospital say it might be, finding that manipulating a molecule leads to dramatic weight loss or weight gain - without any apparent side effects.
Doctors know that patients with advanced cancer often lose interest in food which causes malnutrition, but researchers have now found that those patients have high levels of a molecule known as MIC-1.
When they gave an antidote to the molecule to mice with no appetite, they started eating again and putting on weight.
Does Lack of Sleep Increase Children%u2019s Weight?
A new study from the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital reveals children who don't get enough sleep -- fewer than nine hours -- may be more likely to be overweight.
Researchers looked at the data of 785 elementary school children, ages 9 to 12 -- half were male, 81 percent were white, and 18 percent were overweight in sixth grade.
Results show overweight sixth-graders slept fewer hours than children who were not overweight. Most of the overweight sixth-graders were boys, whom the study revealed slept fewer hours.
The study also found, for every additional hour of sleep in sixth grade, a child was 20-percent less likely to be overweight. Also, every additional hour of sleep in third grade decreased the child's risk of being overweight as a sixth grader by 40 percent.
