I just recently (June 12) lost my pet maltese "Baby Girl". I understand and relate to your pain. Thank you for this article.

Made me remember the time we had a little pup named Rani... the neighbor's little girl came to visit and locked the poor puppy in the bathroom and it took me a while to find Rani. That evening, Rani got very, very sick and she was puking a lot. Because it was so late at night, the vet said he will see Rani at first light. Rani tried to hop onto my bed but I didn't let her. She died a an hour later. Was a little over 2 a.m... I have been feeling guilty ever since...

Such a sweet lens, thanks for sharing! Tributes to our faithful companions never fail to illuminate, and most often bring with them some misty eyes as well.

I just lost my boxer Miles a few months ago, it had been a few years since I'd lost a dog and it hit me harder than I would've ever imagined. Here's my tribute to anyone who'd like to read it:

Great lens! You share a lot of very helpful information and resources here. When you have the chance, please stop by my lens on animals in heaven and say hello.

Excellently done Janet. I'm trying hard to prepare myself when my Zima girl goes. She's 11. All I can hope for is it happens during her sleep, as I really really don't want to see her suffer; or have to take her to the vet to say goodbye.

I have lost many beloved dogs over the years, as well as a cat and various small pets. It always hurts. Now that I have a horse I am dreading the day that I must say goodbye to him, as well. Hopefully that day is still very far away. Meanwhile I am determined to savor every moment of time we have together. Thank you for a good lens on this subject.

What a beautiful lens, thank you. I also remember when as a child my parents had to make that decision for my first dog, Blackie. They told me that he had gone to live at a farm in the country and actually didn't tell me the truth until I was 18. They knew how sensitive I was, and yes, ten years later, it still hurt. Thank you for visiting my Ruger lens. - Kathy

Beautiful lens. Losing a pet can be as painful as losing a child. We all grow so close to our pets and it is a shame that they can never live as long as we do. Great job

I've lost many pets over the years and am glad I have my own land where many of them are now buried, My beloved 7 year old Tobie (Old English Sheepdog)died 10 months ago, and I still can't get over her loss. I wait for her to rise on resurrection day. The pain of losing a pet is one of the hardest, because they have loved us unconditionally. See my lens on DoAnimalsGoToHeaven.

Touching lens -- we have two separate friends' families who recently lost pets -- cats that were with them for many years. The grieving process has taken its toll on them. My one friend told me that she took the loss of her cat much harder than her recent divorce! I remember my stepfather breaking down when my mother and he buried their cat.

    Hello,

Very nice page, I just had to have my dalmatian, Abby put to sleep. I was there when she was born, and there when she took her last breath at 14 years old. She will be missed.

5 stars, and lensrolling you to my page.

Thank you for sharing this with everyone!

Great lens, our pets truly are cherished members of our families. As they live a much more Holistic life than us, I don't believe they fear death as we do, but sometimes hang on until they know we are OK with their leaving, don't you? I always include a copy of Rainbow Bridge in my urns, and I cry every time I read it! A touching story, and a great lens! 5 stars!
  • Home-healthcare Feb 21, 2008 @ 9:00 pm | delete
Very sensitive and touching. Thank you. I've been there, and with a couple of untimely dog deaths that ripped our hearts when we were already grieving the loss of intimate family members! Excellent lens!

We lost our last dog this summer while we were on vacation. Talk about guilt! She was old, but it was still hard and we miss her. This week we're "grandpup" sitting. It's nice to have the pitter patter of eight BIG paws around the house for a few days. Thanks for the very thoughtful lens.

Very informative lens, and nicely done. Our companions are so special to us and we need to be able to go thru the grieving process for them, just as we would any other loved one.

Hi Janet21, Thanks for your info that will help us all when we lose a pet. Also, I try to get the word out that if people have two dogs, they should let the surviving dog see the dead dog's body, if only for a few seconds. It will help their grieving as it's not just humans that miss the lost pet.

I was going to write a lens about the Rainbow Bridge, and am glad to see that you've already included it here. Beautiful job! I'm lenrolling this with my ASPCA lenses.

It is always a terrible loss to lose a beloved pet. Especially hard when we have to make a certain decision. But in once sense we keep our pets with us in our memories. Great lens.

I lost my first dog (a Cross Promeranian) 5 years ago. Till today, I still miss her dearly and each time when I think of her, the pain of losing her is still as fresh as on that day when I and my husband found her motionless body. It is also the first time I saw my husband broke down and cried.

Very nice. We lost our Avalanche on May 16, 2006 and still cannot believe he is gone. It is getting easier and I do smile now when I look at photos. The good that has come out of Avalanches loss is that I started a pet rescue donation website in his name.

This is a nice lens on a tough topic. I also wrote briefly on the hardest day in a pet owner's life as the final section (seemed appropriate no?) of my lens, Random Dog Tips for Random Dogs. I added you to my lensroll so others who wanted to read more on the topic could.
  • JLDillon Feb 20, 2007 @ 8:20 am | delete
What a touching story. The loss of a companion is never easy, but you have only to look into their eyes to see they know you mean no harm. They are waiting at the foot of the rainbow bridge for you, with the many new friends they've made along the way!
