Guys, where are we?

Welcome to the Lost book list.  Here you will find books that are seen or referenced on ABC's popular television series, Lost.

What do these books have to do with Lost?

A lot. Some of the episodes are named after them. Many episodes contain references to them. Some of the story lines closely follow them.

These books have served as creative inspiration to the creators, writers and producers of Lost. Because of that there are themes, clues and references from the books worked into the plot of Lost.

An example is the name Henry Gale. In Lost, this is the name Ben gave to the tailies when they found him, claiming to have crashed on the island in a balloon. Henry Gale is the name of Dorothy's uncle in The Wizard of Oz. The balloon crash (and the Flight 815 crash) is similar to a Jules Verne novel, The Mysterious Island, where the main characters crash a balloon onto an island in the South Pacific. Strange things happen as the survivors begin to realize they are not alone on the island.

Sawyer's Reading List

Sawyer is the most avid reader of the Oceanic Flight 815 survivors. He's often seen kicking back on the beach with a new book in his hands. He even started wearing glasses to read better.

These are books that Sawyer has been seen reading.

Sun catches Sawyer reading this one in episode 16 of season 2.

Evil under the Sun (Hercule Poirot)

Sawyer was reading this in episode 14 of season 3.

Lancelot: A Novel

Sawyer read this one in episode 15 of season 2.

Of Mice and Men (Steinbeck Centennial Edition)

Sawyer was reading this book in a prison flashback during episode 4 of season 3.

Watership Down: A Novel

Sawyer reads this book on the beach in episode 15 of season 3.

A Wrinkle in Time

Sawyer read this in episode 18 of season 1.

The Invention of Morel (New York Review Books Classics)

Sawyer was reading this book about a fugitive on a deserted island while living at the Others' barracks in episode 4 of season 4 ("Eggtown").

Bad Twin

Sawyer read the manuscript for this book in episode 20 of season 2.

The Swan's Bookshelf

Books seen in the Swan station (aka the hatch)

What are the Others reading?

We know the Others enjoy reading (they have their own book club) but they are only seen with a few books in the show.

Carrie

The Others' book club was reviewing this novel when Flight 815 broke up overhead.

The Oath (Dismas Hardy)

Ben had this book in his tent.

A Brief History of Time

Aldo was reading this book while guarding Karl. It was also seen in Ben's bedroom.

An English interpretation of the Holy Quran

Sayid found the Holy Qur'an on the bookshelf in Ben's bedroom in episode 3 of season 4.

Valis

Locke brought this book to Ben from Ben's bookshelf in episode 4 of season 4. Ben stated that he already read it so Locke told him to read it again, he might have missed something the first time.

Quoted Books

These books have been referenced or quoted in at least one episode of Lost.

Jurassic Park

Other Books That Have Influenced Lost

These are books with similar story elements or parallel themes as Lost.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: 100th Anniversary Edition (Books of Wonder)

Many references to this book in Lost. The last 2 episodes of season 4 are titled after Dorothy's famous line, "There's No Place Like Home".

Prey

Apparently the producers of Lost have denied that the black cloud in this story is the same as the one on the island. But I've read the book and it sounds a lot like the island's mysterious black smoke cloud. Could also explain some of the figures (Jack's dad, black horse, Walt) the survivors have seen on the island.

More Quoted Books

These books have been referenced or quoted in at least one episode of Lost.

The Mysterious Island (Modern Library Classics)

I read this one and wrote a review. Great story and it was interesting to compare these castaways with the Losties.

The Outsiders

To Kill a Mockingbird

Books read by other Flight 815 survivors

Laughter in the Dark

Read by Hurley.

NIV Holy Bible

Mr. Eko carved scriptures into his walking stick. The missing piece of the DHARMA Initiative orientation film is hidden inside a Bible that Eko found.

Bad Twin

Hurley found and read the manuscript to this book in episode 13 of season 2. It was written by the guy who got sucked into the engine in the first episode.

Books Read on the Freighter

Even the crew of the freighter Kahana like to enjoy a good book.

The Survivors of the Chancellor (Dodo Press)

Regina was reading this Jules Verne tale about a shipwreck while guarding Sayid and Desmond aboard the freighter. She was reading the book upside down and committed suicide soon after.

Write Your Reviews

Have you read any of the Lost books? What do you think about the parallels between the books and Lost?

Calv1n

I just finished Huraki Murakami's "Kafka On the Shore" and I am convinced it was the genesis of the entire story line for LOST. Read it for yourself and decide.

Seriously, I think this borders on intellectual property infringement.

Most of the books Sawyer read were ones he found scavenging through the plane's wreckage. The author of "Bad Twin" was a passenger on flight 815 and had the manuscript with him. Other books were already on the island in the Swan station or with the Others.

Excellent lens. Here's my question... Were these books mostly from the plane?

I am SO glad someone built this lens! I had the idea for it a while back, but just never got around to it because there was so much research to do for it. Congrats on a great lens, and thanks for the reference! I'm bookmarking to reference later as LOST continues to blow my mind!
