Additionally, some unclaimed property are in what is known as "pre-escheat". Pre-escheat lost money are funds that are in the limbo known as the "dormancy period". These monies have been abandoned but not enough time has passed to require the companies to hand the accounts over to the state.

Additionally many states rarely update their records, and there are many sites claiming to be tied in to those incomplete databases, when in reality they're using bogus databases to string you along.
