In Loving Memory Of Our Lost Socks

It is Official...Lost Sock Memorial Day is celebrated each year on May 9th. What, you have never heard of this holiday? I have it on good authority from Milton M. Monkey, pictured at the left, that there is indeed a day set aside each year memorializing the lost socks of the world. He has come with me today to explain the holiday and to give you some ideas on how best to celebrate.

Milt, as known by his closest friends, is quite the authority on this somewhat obscure holiday of the month of May. Don't tell him that I told you this, but one of the rumors around our neighborhood is that Milt moved here from the Land of the Un-Lost Socks several years ago. I've even heard that it was Milt's ancestors who started this holiday many generations ago. Milt would be too humble to take the credit for such a glorious holiday as Lost Sock Memorial Day, but I couldn't find anyone else wanting the honor of it's creation either.

Follow with Milt and I as we look at this special day and give you some pointers on how to celebrate properly.

Drawer Full Of Mismatched Socks

represents missing or lost socks.

Lost Sock On VacationMilt, the sock monkey, has shared with me that for as long as he can remember his family has gathered around the one drawer residing in each home which is full of mismatched socks. They take some time to reflect on the lost sock of the once pair and pay homage to the lost brethren of their species.

Someone recalls that the now single striped sock was once mated to an identical one that was swallowed by a washing machine while taking a bath. Grandpa Sock Monkey pays tribute to his mate who was lost in a clothes dryer many years ago and dreams of the day that he can join her in the Land of Lost Socks. Milt remembers his twin brother, PJ, who mysteriously disappeared 10 years ago after a night of frolicking in a wooded area.

Many of us never know what really happened to our once mated pairs of socks, we just know how difficult it is to throw a single sock away. May 9th is a day that we can reflect (as briefly as possible) on how warm and dry those socks once kept our feet and then move on with our lives for another year. Perhaps we can find something to do with the now single sock, instead of relegating it to a drawer hoping that someday the lost sock will suddenly appear.

Reuse That Not Lost Sock:

Once a part of a pair, the sock that has not been lost can be used to dust with on cleaning day. Give that poor lonely sock something to do with it's time since it no longer keeps your toes warm.

Buy A New Pair Of Socks

in memory of your lost socks

Please do try to guard your new pair of socks, this time around. Take good care of them, don't let them get lost and unmatched so that you will have to memorialize one of them next year. It is the right thing to do, after all. Your warm and dry feet will thank you for the effort. Milt and his family could use the break...too.

How Do Socks Get Lost?

Since May 9th is the day to remember our lost socks, perhaps we should think of the ways that they get lost in the first place.

  • Swallowed whole in a washing machine
  • Clothes Dryer Accidents (sucked away in a vent to the unknown)
  • Falling victim to a tunnel under our beds
  • Left behind at the beach when we took them off to run our toes through the sand
  • Static cling attached them to the leg of that pair of pants we sent to Goodwill
  • Buried in the basket of mending to be done at a later date
  • The dog ate it when we left him/her alone too long
  • Sock Trolls visit in the middle of the night, stealing only one sock to mess with our heads
  • The vacuum sweeper ate it for lunch
  • Sacrificed itself to a black hole so that we would be saved

Well, as far as we can tell there is no official Government Study on the causes for lost socks. These are some of the excuses that Milt and I have run across in our research, anyways.

Things To Do With Single Socks

While remembering the socks that have traveled to the Land of Lost Socks, we should consider what to do with the ones that remain. We can clear an entire drawer leaving room for new socks or something better if we put our minds to it:

Use one sock to dust with

Create a sock monkey or other toy like Milton M. Monkey

Soak up spills on the kitchen floor

Wipe off greasy tools and then toss away

Polish silver

Use socks as hand puppets

Attach two mismatched socks to the end of a ladder to prevent marking your walls

With a little imagination...create a wind sock

Attach to the end of the Dryer Hose to collect additional lint and humidify your home

Be different wear socks in mismatched pairs...create a new look!

As a girl, one of the stories I liked to read was about a lost sock - it passed through various owners and uses (including a piggybank) before it was given to a little girl as her Christmas stocking. What a lovely way to use a great 'spare' sock! I love your lens; Happy Lost Sock Memorial Day!
