The sequel to the cult classic The Lost Boys is set 20 years after the events of the original movie, Chris and Nicole Emerson find more than they bargain for when they move to Luna Bay and meet Shane and his friends. With some help from Edgar Frog, will Chris be able to save his sister Nicole?

The Lost Boys

A brief history lesson

Released in 1987, The Lost Boys told the story of brothers Michael and Sam Emerson who move to Santa Carla with their mother. Moving in with their ecentric grandfather, Michael and Sam find it hard to adjust to life in the tiny sea-side town. At the Boardwalk, Michael falls for Star, a mysterious girl who lives with The Lost Boys.

Befriended by David and the rest of the gang, Michael's life takes a darker turn. Sam becomes friends with Edgar and Alan Frog, who work in their parents' comic book story by day while fighting crime by night. When strange things start to happen, Michael finds out he hasn't just fallen in with some local punks -- the Lost Boys are really vampires!

The movie went on to become a cult classic, a favorite among vampire fans. The cast included Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, Edward Herrmann, and Dianne Wiest.

Welcome to Luna Bay

The story so far...

Champion surfer Chris (Tad Hilgenbrink) and Nicole (Autumn Reeser) Emerson have just lost their parents and are forced to move in with their aunt Jillian (Gabrielle Rose) who lives in the small coastal town of Luna Bay, California.

When Nicole falls for local bad boy Shane (Angus Sutherland), Chris soon realizes his sister has fallen in with The Tribe, a pack of vampires who terrorize the sleepy village with their need for thrills and blood.

With some help from Edgar Frog (Corey Feldman), Chris sets out to destroy the vampires and save his sister before she becomes a vampire herself. Alan Frog (Jamison Newlander) and Sam Emerson (Corey Haim) also appear.

The Tribe

Who are these new vamps?

Lead by Shane (Angus Sutherland, half-brother to Kiefer Sutherland who played David in the original film) these vampires are all about thrills. Surfing, dirt bikes, skateboarding, you name it. The other vampires are Kyle (Shaun Sipos), Jon (Kyle Cassie), and Erik (Merwin Mondesir). These vampires rule Luna Bay and destroy anyone who gets in their way.

The origins of the Tribe are explored in the four-part comic book mini series Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs.

Legendary horror film actor Tom Savini plays the vampire Van Etten, who apparently gets into a fight with The Tribe.

Truth, Justice, and the American Way

The return of Edgar Frog

The movie contains much-hyped return of Corey Feldman as Edgar Frog. Many things have happened to the vampire hunter in 21 years... things Edgar is reluctant to reveal.

Now living and working in Luna Bay, shaping surf boards when not hunting suck monkeys, Edgar comes to the aid of Chris Emerson.

The prequel comics The Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs, a four-part set explores the years between The Lost Boys and Lost Boys: The Tribe. It also explains how Alan Frog became a vampire, which is shown in an "alternate ending" on the DVD bonus disc.

During the credits of Lost Boys: The Tribe, we see a show down between Edgar and Sam Emerson, now a vampire. Unfortunately, how Sam became a vampire is not explained, neither by the film nor the comic books.

Death by Washington Monument!

Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs

On May 14th, 2008, DC Comics' Wildstorm imprint released the first issue in a four-issue comic called The Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs.

The story spans from 1990 (three years after The Lost Boys) to 2007 (a year before the events of Lost Boys: The Tribe) and chronicles the adventures of Edgar & Alan Frog and their friend Sam Emerson. The story is said to touch on members of the original gang of vampires the Lost Boys and the origins of Shane, leader of The Tribe. It will also feature Chris and Nicole Emerson and how they came to Luna Bay.

Written by screenwriter Hans Rodionoff, who wrote the script for Lost Boys: The Tribe, the comic series is set to bring fans up to date just in time for the release of the sequel.

The Viral Campaign

Although The Tribe will not see a theatrical release, Warner Bros has gone ahead and added to the hype by starting a viral campaign for the movie via online websites.

Lost Boys: The Tribe -- Official website with the trailer and a link to sign up for email updates about the movie's release.

The City of Luna Bay -- Fictional website for the city of Luna Bay, California (the setting of the film.) With listings of events, links to local shops and lodging, it seems pretty run-of-the-mill until you find the Luna Bay Paranormal Investigations link. On the page is a biography for Edgar Frog. It is also noted that tours have been canceled and several investigators are missing...

Luna Bay Sheriff's Department -- Official site for the police presence in Luna Bay. Offers tips on how to stay safe while having fun in the town.

California Coastal Missing Persons Foundation -- A site that lists ads for missing persons. It also has a map that shows the relation of Luna Bay to Santa Carla and notes that several of the ads have been removed and the site has been recently hacked. Among the missing is a Lisa Emerson.

Frog Brothers Surf Company -- The website for Edgar Frog's surfboard company. four types of surfboard models are shown, one called "The Vamp".

Sequel Controversy

A fan's rant

Although much-hyped, Lost Boys: The Tribe turned out to be a disappointing film. The film basically copied the original movie, updating it only via foul-language, contrived plot points, bad acting, and terrible special effects.

None of the magic of The Lost Boys was captured in The Tribe. There is no single person to place blame upon; the fault lies with both Warner Bros and director PJ Pesce for making a contrived "sequel" that was only riding the coattails of the original. The only reason this was ever made was for money. A sad commentary on how low the film industry as gone.

As for the "return" of Corey Haim, and Jamison Newlander, these poor guys were relegated to "deleted scenes". In fact, these scenes were better then anything left in the film!

For fans and new comers, the choice remains yours as to whether you choose to see Lost Boys: The Tribe. But I personally cannot recommend it.
