The You in LOTR Online
Building your character
Now that you're in, it's time to create your first character. Your character is your representative in the world of Middle Earth. You can have multiple characters and you can always make a new one if you don't like the first one, so don't freak out about it too much. A character consists of three basic parts: a class, a race, and a level. These parts will determine the type of skills and abilities your character will have so we'll explain each of these in a bit more detail.
Your race means just that and has the biggest effect on your character's appearance and starting statistics (the numbers which determine how strong, smart, fast, and tough you are). As you'd might expect, in Lord of the Rings Online, the available race choices are the races of Men, Elves, Dwarves and our friendly neighborhood Hobbits. There are some statistical differences, but ultimately any race can play their classes well so just choose what you like. Just remember that some classes are available only to certain races, so if you wish to play a Loremaster, you'd have to go with the race of Men or Elves. Check your manual for a full description of the races and their available classes. Note that your character's gender will not have any effect on how the game plays. Dwarves can only be male and the reason for this is that in Tolkien's original works, Dwarven females rarely left the Dwarven strongholds and when they did "they looked alike and dressed in the garb of men" making for so little visible difference that "they were said to be born from stone".
You can think of your character's class as his or her "job" in Middle Earth. They determine your abilities, the types of equipment you can use, and will heavily influence how you play the game. Choosing the right class could be an entire guide in itself, so for now let's keep things simple for now: If you like to fight up close and in the thick of things, choose Champion, Guardian, Burglar, or Captain. If you want to play far away and influence the battle from a distance, choose Hunter, Minstrel, or Loremaster. The game does a pretty good job of describing each class more in-depth as well - You can watch the class videos provided by Turbine that are built into the game engine.
