Lotsa Helping Hands - A Way to Organize the Offers of Support

Ranked #1,368 in Nonprofits, #312,890 overall | Donates to Save the Children

Organizing the Many Helpers' Hands with Lotsa Helping Hands

Lotsa Helping Hands is a simple, immediate way for friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors to assist loved ones in need by organizing all of the offers of support during a time of crisis. Lotsa Helping Hands provides family and friends with an answer to the question "What can I do to help?"

The system is an easy-to-use, private online group calendar, specifically designed to organize helpers, so that the offers of support can be better coordinated and those who have volunteered can pitch in with meals delivery, rides and the many other daily tasks of life to help everything run smoothly even in the midst of a crisis.

Helping to Organize the Helping Hands

Inspiration behind Lotsa Helping Hands

Lotsa Helping Hands was created by Barry Katz as the result of witnessing four years of inspiring community support and response to a family member's serious medical crisis, his wife's battle with cancer.

During this time he could see how well-meaning friends wanted to help them, but discovered it was difficult to juggle and organizing their assistance.

Barry envisioned a service where he could have posted his meal and driving needs, and his community of friends could have signed up without duplicating each other's efforts.

Friends would never have forgotten when and where to pick up his children; they could have been reminded by email the day before, and an hour before. He could have left notes that said he wanted friends to knock and come in when they brought a meal, or that he didn't want to talk to a soul.

Ultimately the founders designed and created Lotsa Helping Hands as the resource that they could have used when facing their medical crisis. Lotsa Helping Hans was created as a way to bring together a variety of social circles to create a community of support.

Getting Started on a Community Calendar

Setting up a Community Calendar on Lotsa Helping Hands

  1. Choose a Coordinator.
A family member or a close friend is often the person that makes a good coordinator, the one that would register with the Lotsa Helping Hands service.
  2. Register with Lotsa Helping Hands.
After registering, the coordinator creates a private website which can be used immediately.
  3. Add Members.
The coordinator adds the name and email address of each person who is interested in helping. This would include other coordinators, if desired. These are the only people who can sign in to your group website.
  4. List what's needed.
The Lotsa Helping Hands site provides easy to use built-in forms. The coordinator can add specific needs for meals, rides, shopping and other to the group calendar. Members of the group are notified by email if there are new posts.

How the Lotsa Helping Hands Community Calendar Works

Organizing Your Community of Support During a Time of Challenge

After picking a coordinator and having all of the interested 'helping hands' register, the system takes over.

1. Members get a "welcome" email message about the site, with information on signing in.

2. When they log in, they can see the group calendar and pitch in with whatever fits their own situation and schedule, knowing that their efforts will be well directed.

3. People in need can get help without having to make repeated requests. With the community calendar organizing helpers, everyone knows what to do and when to do it.

Energy is spent in helping, not on scheduling.
