I Officially Threw My Hat In the Ring for September 2008

For Giant Squid status that is. This is my lensography (Google loves that word...it thinks it's about eye glasses) for how I achieved that.

When I first decided I wanted to be a Giant Squid was in May of '08. The obsessive part of me wanted to do it by the end of June BUT I had a few other things in my life to accomplish before that. So I set a more realistic goal of September, 2008.

It was tough getting to that 50 great lenses goal and I had to really crank them out in September. But I did and I felt pretty great and passionate about all my lenses. There was no doubt about it...I was my own best fan!

But September 30 came around and I was not accepted. I went through a couple of bleak weeks, let me tell you. It was a big, bIG, BIG bummer. I wasn't even sure I would ever apply again.

But time is a great healer and so I have picked myself up, dusted myself off, and with the help of a few good friends (one in particular), am sprucing up these lenses and adding a few more.

I've also had time to balance myself a bit, promoting these lenses, joining SquidU more, and getting out to meet some other great lensmasters and see what they are doing.

Here, I'll be chronicling the lenses I've got, the lenses I'm creating and anything else that occurs to me about the process of making 50 great lenses, including the countdown to Giant Squid status (finger's crossed!). At this point I think I'll someday be creating 100 lenses, BUT that's a stretch for now.

Now, if only I could lose 50 pounds by Dec 30...

Where Did That Hat Phrase Come From Anyway?

According to The Phrase Finder the first published form of "throwing the hat in the ring" was in 1820 by John Hamilton Reynolds. It was used in boxing matches, notoriously loud and noisy, when someone wanted to challenge the boxing champion. Later it became associated with running for political office. Teddy Roosevelt used it when declaring he was running for presidency in 1912.

I like what this hat is wearing! Now enough distraction and on to my lenses...

Why I Started Squidooing In The First Place

I had a variety of websites I wanted to promote in new ways. I read a marketing book which wasn't very helpful EXCEPT it mentioned Squidoo. That one tip was worth the book price. Of course once I got through the doorway of Squidoo World, I started developing other reasons for being here, most notably obsession! Here are the sites I have been promoting with Squidoo...

My First Lens

Like our children, we love our first one in a very special way. Besides falling in love with Squidoo while making this lens, I also learned the painful lesson of being careful with the url name (which I made a typo in this one).

My Lenses About My Number One Passion

I love energy: teaching it, talking it, and healing with it. When I first started Squidoo, this theme was my primary focus.

My Lenses about Crystalline Consciousness Technique

This fabulous subtle energy protocol could save the world...if enough people knew about it. And if you think you don't need to learn it because you aren't into energy healing or the healing arts profession, you are so wrong! Find out why...

My Top Lens of All Time (So Far)

And it had nothing to do with my focus on my websites

This lens was created when I wanted some place to showcase a book that I wrote that is no longer in print. It got LOTD, just 16 days after I wrote it. How fabulous was that! Much later I added some Mexican recipe lenses.

My Monkeybrain Lenses

So fun to create, but only if they debate.

Being Naked On Squidoo

In this lens I decide to bare all, get naked and share my weight loss project IN PUBLIC. At the time I was in a competition, which was so helpful. Now I have to find the inner competitor...

My Big Fat Mistake Lens

The ever project, although fun, comes with a steep price...Google doesn't pick it up. So this one about me is just for the Squidoo community. I have another one about me in the regular Squidoo template (further down). It has very different info.

One of my alter egos...

In the 1990s I wrote about growing up on a dude ranch in Montana which were published in a local, monthly called The Trout Wrapper. Here I republish some of my favorite ones.

Lenses 36-40: A Competition with Myself

These lenses were part of the 10 lenses in 10 hours challenge. You have to keep yourself motivated somehow and this is how I did it. Did I make the challenge? You'll have to read the lens to find out!

Lenses 41-45: Fun Lenses (Or More Randomness)

Puff, puff, pant, pant. I think I can, I think I can.

Need caffeine. Need steroids. Need a life.

Lenses 46-50: Healing With Simple and Natural Remedies

Am off for my 10 day silent meditation retreat. Feel free to interrupt me, if I make Giant Squid status.

Number 50 is, of course, this lensography.

Is There Life After Fifty?

Lenses that is

I'm finding it's hard to keep promoting all fifty plus lenses, so have been slow to make more. Plus some of them just aren't interesting to me after initially making them (I actually deleted one!). Bit by bit, though, I'm inching up there.

And The Final Two

I was shooting for 60

But was one lens short. I love the lenses I made this second try.

Giant Squidooers and More Who Have Inspired Me

And a big thank you for that...

Giant Squid is only the beginning to Squidwho stardom. Check out these angels who have taken the time to comment on my lenses, favorite my lenses, star my lenses and more.

Yes, you've got quality and quantity going for you

blue22d says:

I just recently made Giant and now I am going for the 100 club. Thanks for your lens. It is very helpful.

Ener-G says:

I made it! Took two tries. I was prepared to go for a third and a fourth if I had to. Somehow 100 seems easier now.

Ener-G says:

Well, in spite of my "bad" application email, I'm feeling hopeful. And I've learned a lot in the process since the last time.

Ener-G says:

The original duel was focused on my becoming a GS in September. It looks like it will be a long process..who knows how long? So I will commit to staying in it for the long haul.

Jewelsofawe says:

I noticed you did it. Yippie!

Ener-G says:

I DID IT!!!

Ener-G says:

I feel like Michael Phelps going for 8 golds. Actually, I may end up with 51! That would give me a one lens margin for something that isn't Squidoo worthy.

Ener-G says:

Three days, just 2 more lenses to go. What if I haven't counted correctly, though? Amazing thing is, I'm still enjoying making lenses. I get totally caught up the lens that I'm making and love everything about it, from researching to designing it. You Squidoo folks are the bomb, for creating this!

Ener-G says:

I will, I will!

Jewelsofawe says:

Use the force. You can do it!

LindaJM says:

Of course you will. We can encourage and help each other. I'm there for you, girl!

No, De Nile is a river in Egypt

Ener-G says:

There are a lot of great Giant Squid contenders out there. If this time they only pick 18-20 like last time, it's going to be really tough. But I have learned a lot by NOT getting Giant Squid so adversity does help make one a better lensmaster. Oh, my number one tip...don't apply until all your lenses are ready to be viewed!

Ener-G says:

That would be a no from the Giant Squid pickers. Ouch.

Ener-G says:

Evidently the road is longer than I thought.

Ener-G says:

Holy, Bat lenses! My dashboard says I have 50 lenses (including this lensography, but I can only find 49! What's up with that? So I need to squeak out one more lens. Bummer! And every lens will have to count because I only have 50...no room for error! Self doubt is creeping in.

Ener-G says:

Well, I made it over the 30s hump. But now my challenge is 10 lenses in 6 days. Meanwhile my business is languishing, I've gained 10 pounds, and my husband is sick of the only view of me being in the computer. You gotta love an addiction! Squidoo Anonymous, anyone?

Ener-G says:

Holy Crap! 17 lenses to go and just 15 days.

Ener-G says:

Just 38 days left for 24 lenses. Self doubt is beginning to creep in. I had five lenses I thought would be a breeze to whip out and they have taken me very long indeed. Sigh.
