I Officially Threw My Hat In the Ring for September 2008
When I first decided I wanted to be a Giant Squid was in May of '08. The obsessive part of me wanted to do it by the end of June BUT I had a few other things in my life to accomplish before that. So I set a more realistic goal of September, 2008.
It was tough getting to that 50 great lenses goal and I had to really crank them out in September. But I did and I felt pretty great and passionate about all my lenses. There was no doubt about it...I was my own best fan!
But September 30 came around and I was not accepted. I went through a couple of bleak weeks, let me tell you. It was a big, bIG, BIG bummer. I wasn't even sure I would ever apply again.
But time is a great healer and so I have picked myself up, dusted myself off, and with the help of a few good friends (one in particular), am sprucing up these lenses and adding a few more.
I've also had time to balance myself a bit, promoting these lenses, joining SquidU more, and getting out to meet some other great lensmasters and see what they are doing.
Here, I'll be chronicling the lenses I've got, the lenses I'm creating and anything else that occurs to me about the process of making 50 great lenses, including the countdown to Giant Squid status (finger's crossed!). At this point I think I'll someday be creating 100 lenses, BUT that's a stretch for now.
Now, if only I could lose 50 pounds by Dec 30...

Where Did That Hat Phrase Come From Anyway?
According to The Phrase Finder the first published form of "throwing the hat in the ring" was in 1820 by John Hamilton Reynolds. It was used in boxing matches, notoriously loud and noisy, when someone wanted to challenge the boxing champion. Later it became associated with running for political office. Teddy Roosevelt used it when declaring he was running for presidency in 1912.I like what this hat is wearing! Now enough distraction and on to my lenses...
