Have you ever wondered where the Lottery game came from?

This is a little bit of fun on my part as I have often wondered where and when the Lottery came from.

I hope you enjoy my findings, and I wish you luck in the next draw you partake in.

The History of the Lottery Game.

Where did all begin

Having an idle moment

Having an idle moment one day I decided to find out who invented the Lottery, and why?
Having a curious mind I set about finding a few facts, and I have to say some were quite supprising.

Lottery is a popular game which is played all over the world, and to many it's an easy form of gambling. There are promises of big prizes should you be lucky enough to have all the right numbers.

In some countries the game is banned, while other countries use it as a great way of raising taxes, by taking a percentage of the profits.

The earlist mention I could find was on Wikipedia.com who mentioned that the first signs trace back to the Han Dynasty between 205 and 187 BC. It was also believed that the funds were used to help build the great wall of China.

The first European Lottery was said to have been during the Roman Empire, and was mainly used for entertainment at dinner parties. Each guest would recieve a ticket, and prizes would consist of fancy items like dinner ware.

Every ticket holder would win something which in my mind sounds nice.

The first cash Lottery in Europe was held in Florence in Italy, and the date on this goes back to 1530.

It was the Dutch who were the first to change the Lottery draw to soley cash, and it is believed that the odds of winning were 1 in 4. This proved very popular, and was hailed as a painless form of taxation.

Money raised was used to support poor people, building dykes, construction of defence works for towns, and to buy sailors from slavery in the Arab countries.

The English word Lottery stems from the Dutch word Lotterij, which is derived from a Dutch nown meaning fate.

The Dutch State owned staatsloterij is the oldest Lottery game still existing.

The Euromillions Lottery is the largest in Europe which is said to growing every year.
