Lotus Carlton - the four-door supercar

Ranked #2,581 in Cars, #143,942 overall

About Lotus Carlton

The Lotus Carlton was a dream car. With a top speed of over one hundred and seventy miles an hour, with a 3.6 litre engine, handling that had to be tried to be believed, and a comparatively modest price tag it remains the fastest production road car in the world to date. Strangely enough it was a four-door saloon made for family use.

The Lotus Carlton and its European version, the Opal Omega, were virtually identical, and still have a devoted fan base, despite being produced in a short run at the height of the nineties recession.

The four-door Family Supercar

The Lotus Carlton

General Motors, the owners of Vauxhall wanted to produce a showcase car, something that would highlight the skills of their engineering. So, they turned to the recently acquired Lotus team and gave them a standard Vauxhall Carlton, a four door salon road car, and asked them what they could do with it...

The result was a four door family saloon with a 3.6 litre engine, a six-speed gearbox, and a spoiler. Released in the UK as the Lotus Carlton and Europe as the Opel Lotus Omega, it had the same performance as a Ferrari.

Its top speed caused problems: one hundred and seventy miles an hour. Safety groups were outraged, and the police weren't too happy either. Since the car could outrun police interceptors, a lot of less-than-legit individuals bought or simply stole them. Vauxhall ended up having to omit the top speed from their advertising, and trying to downplay the fact that the car they had built was very, very, fast.

Ulitmately an outside factor was its downfall. Released in 1990, during the recession, very few people were buying new cars. As the insurance premiums climbed because they were popular targets for thieves, the demand dried up. Despite its excellent performance (and sheer cool factor) the Lotus Carlton was discontinued.

However, among motorheads, racing fans and those who like really fast cars, the Lotus Carlton is still considered a classic, and second hand cars are traded and well maintained.

In motion

A talk through of the Lotus Carlton by (an extremely enthusiastic) Tiff Needell.

It's worth mentioning that for a while Top Gear apparently used a Lotus Carlton to get their shots of the high-performance sportscars cruising at top speed.

In trouble with the law

The Lotus Carlton at full speed

As it turned out there were very good reasons why the police hated this car. With its comparatively low price and incredibly high performance it was loved by the less-then-legal, which of course included speeders.

And on occasion, the police could have trouble keeping up.

(Video kicks in at 00:20 - why the British Police never bought these cars I have never understood)

The greatest Lotus of all time...

Share your views!

Likely to be a heated debate. Since the module only allows two options I've split it into roughly the Chapman Lotus cars and the later Lotuses, but please say which car you prefer. Is it the Elise for its style, the Europa for its innovation, or the Carlton because it was just plain fast?

What do you think was the greatest Lotus of all time?

I still love the little Europe; with a tall flag off the bumper so people can see it hiding behind the curb.

I like the Europa and the early Esprits best

Even now, slightly older and second hand, remarkably good deals can be found. Remember that the car is available in right and left hand drive, so check if it's a Carlton or an Omega, or one converted, before you buy.
