Lou16's Lensography

Who's Lou16?

Well that would be me!    When I moved 'down under' half a lifetime ago people seemed to automatically shorten my name which led to everyone calling me Lou!   There are lots of Lou's in this wide world web that we inhabit so I added my favorite number - 16 and Lou16 was 'born'!

Now you know how I was born why don't you keep reading to find out more about me...and visit some of my lenses along the way (after all this is a lensography!).

Why do I Squidoo?

I love squidooing.....I first found Squidoo through a link on a blog and I joined and did......................(drum roll please)..nothing!

I revisited a few months later and wrote a few lenses in order to create some backlinks, instead I got hooked!

I am a Colossal Squid

After a while I decided to try out for Giant Squidom and I was accepted on my 1st attempt. I can't remember being so excited.....then I made my 1st sale woooo hoooo! I was on fire, mind you the proceeds wouldn't have brought me a latte, not even a bar of chocolate, but it was a S A L E !!

I was on such a high I started producing more lenses and thought 100 club here I come. No I didn't, ouch is that a bruised ego I feel?

I finally made it 1 year after I became a Giant (3rd attempt for people keeping record). Again I was absolutely over the moon!

I am no longer a Giant Squid 100 Club member as the playing field rules were changed and I'm not what is known as a Colossal Squid which means I have at least 250 quality lenses to my name!

Back to my holiday...............I was lucky enough to live in NZ for 10 years of my life. My hubby's a Kiwi and my parents are now naturalised Kiwis too.

I really must write a few lenses about the Land of the Long White Cloud, but for now all I've got are these -

I Love Cocktails

Cocktail SquidI actually don't drink alcohol very often nowadays, but cocktails do bring back some great memories. When I was first married I used to go out with the girls on a Friday night (the boys went out on Saturday nights after footy which meant no need for babysitters for my friends that had already started their family) and we used to go to this great cocktail bar. They served giant cocktails and we would all have a straw. Basically between popping 'next door' to have a dance and free water in between cocktails we usually only had to buy one of these giants each!

Anyway although in the summer in Australia it's nice to have a cold beer it's actually not that often that I enjoy alcohol. I figure if I'm only indulging occassionally I should have something special and that translates to cocktails!

Cocktail Squid is from Squidville and is on
holiday here courtesy of his owner Steve.

Cocktails are more of a whole experience rather than just a drink. I really don't want to spend all of my time making alot of these cocktails though so it also encourages me to slow down my consumption!

Lovely tasting drink - clear head the next day. That sounds like a win/win situation to me!
My friends do enjoy coming over for a cocktail as well, although we don't do it often enough! My selection of cocktails have their own home at Lou's Cocktal Lounge.

I Love the 80s

The time when you're a teen or in your early 20s are really special. You've got no cares and worries and your whole life is ahead. Those days for me occured in the 80s and so I look back to this decade with fond memories.

My dd teases me about 80s music sometimes and I was abit afraid that someone had written a song about me when I heard "Stuck in 1985". Then I realised oh no that's okay I don't own a SUV anymore!! If you don't know the song then take a listen now it's really catchy.
The official video can't be shown here, but it is fantastic if you get a chance to watch it ....... the band Bowling for Soup basically take off different 80s bands and it always brings a smile to me face. Actually even just listening to it gets me bopping along!

I Love Gift Shopping

I love shopping for gifts, there is just something special about seeing a person's face when they open a gift they love. I have been told a number of times over the years that I have a special gift for it (excuse the pun).

I don't believe that it's a gift, I think it's just about being 'in tune' with the person you're buying for. Mind you that didn't stop me from producing a number of 'gift' lenses.

You want to know a secret? I'm not even a great fan of shopping usually, only if I have a reason to shop!

I Love Christmas

Christmas brings back fond childhood memories for me. Growing up in the UK Christmas was like a bright spot in the middle of a long, dark winter.

When I moved to NZ I found that it was harder to get into the Christmas spirit. My hubby and his mates weren't really Christmas-focused either. My mum's theory was that Christmas down under gets in the way of their summer holiday! This made sense at the time as businesses (at that time, not now) shut down just before Christmas and didn't re-open until the end of January!

Having a family we do get into Christmas more, thank goodness, although we always have an artificial tree. My first Christmas as a married woman I wanted a Christmas tree - a 'real' one, but when we looked at what was available it was a very VERY sorry sight. The next year we brought our 'fake' Christmas tree and have used it ever since.

All of my friends in Australia and NZ seem to have artificial Christmas trees (if they have any) and I haven't tried to hunt down a 'real' one in Australia.

I am a Mother

I am the proud mum of a gorgeous daughter who is much too bright for her own good! Thanks to her I have learnt all about Dora, the Backyardigans, Disney Princesses, Bratz, Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers and Jusin Bieber.

I have also learnt patience and how to 'get over' being embarressed really quickly. Oh, and also the words to way too many Wiggles songs that no non-wiggle should ever know!

Lady Gaga & I

2009 saw Lady Gaga come into my life. My dd mentioned her and after hearing her first song I decided to search for some information on her. It seemed that everywhere I looked had the same blurb cut and pasted from her website bio.

I decided to write a lens on her - amazingly no one else had done one yet - and she became my most profitable niche. I did a number of Lady Gaga related lenses including a Lady Gaga Costume one for Halloween which made 2009's Halloween my most profitable to date!

Keeping up to date with Lady Gaga also impressed my daughter when I could sprinkle little nuggets of information into conversations.........mum really does know everything!
All of my Lady Gaga lenses have their own little home now -

If I Write Will They Die?

One of my Rocket Mom's assignments was to write a Top 10 list type lens. I decided to write one on Michael Jackson songs.

When I make a lens I usually make it in a word doc (or in notepad) and get all of my links together before starting it on Squidoo.

So I chose my top 10, found my youtube urls and all the links I wanted to use, saved it and went to bed. The following morning I got up and my hubby walks in from the lounge and said 'they think Michael Jackson might be dead.'

Should I publish the lens or not?

What would you have done?

submit
I ended up publishing it at lunchtime here (Qld, Australia), but I did a totally different lens for my Rocket Mom's assignment. The next day I found my lens on the front page of google and the hits kept coming.

A little over a week later I wrote a lens on John Hughes movies, the next day I heard that he had died..............it took me a long time to write about a living person again!

I Love Purple

When I was younger if you'd asked me what my favorite color was I would've answered blue. Somewhere along the way my color preference has changed. Looking in my wardrobe, aside from the more corporate black and grey (I worked in accounting and banking for a while!), purple in all it's shades dominates.

I See Purple Stars!

While we're talking about all things purple I'm the proud owner of some purple starred lenses. Want to know more about purple stars? Check out the Squidoo Purple Star page.

My first two purple star lenses were written in response to a Rocket Moms assignment and were a lot of fun to make.

I have another purple star! One of my earlier contributions was a lens on Mocktails and between Christmas 2009 and the eve of a new decade it also saw purple!

Barney Stinson has also seen purple! I love getting these emails I have a special purple star happy dance - feel free to nominate any of my lenses :)

I'm a Bookworm

When I was younger I can remember one of my teachers telling my mother that I didn't read books, I devoured them! I achieved so many bookworm certificates it wasn't funny!

Since becoming a mother I haven't read as much and since discovering Squidoo I've read even less!!!

I haven't written many book related lenses, I'm not sure why....

I Enjoy Movies

I love going to the movies, hubby and I used to go every week until we became parents. The past year we've started to go to the movies more again, but these days it's all about family friendly films!

I haven't written many movie lenses because I find it harder to write them than I would've imagined - I guess I'm always worried about giving the plot away!

My Brother Likes Movies Too!

I Love Making Money

Especially with Squidoo

To date 2009 has been my best Squidoo year ever.....

  • The first time in the top 100 by lensrank

  • The first time I've had over 1,000 hits on one lens in a week

  • The first time I've had over 10,000 visits on one lens in a week

  • The first time I made over $100 a month on Squidoo

Woo hoo!

My best month for dashboard sales so far has been October 2009 because, in the main, of my Halloween lenses.
All of my Halloween lenses have their own little home and I also have a seperate home for my fancy dress costumes -

Hello, I'm Lou16

and I'm a chocoholic!

Yes, I love chocolate. Last week my dd came over to give me a kiss before bed (she has been naughty and wasn't allowed treats for a week) as she leaned in I smelt chocolate on her breath. This made me feel angry, but dd just has a look of awe that I could smell the (apparently) tiny piece she ate.

Mom - the chocolate radar!
Anyway somehow I've managed to amass a number of food lenses so I decided to give them their own home(!) are you sensing a pattern here???

I'm also a Hubber

I've also started to write on hupages. I joined a long time ago, but got sidetracked with Squidoo amongst other things. Anyway, I revisited hubpages this year and after I'd met my goals for Squidoo decided I needed to spend some time diversifying there as well.
