King Louis XIV of France

Louis XIV (1643-1715) was a famous king of France, often known as the "Sun King" (le roi soleil) because of the splendor and brilliance of his reign and his court at Versailles (just outside Paris).

The age of Louis XIV saw such great writers and artists as Moliere, Racine, La Fontaine, and Le Brun.

Louis XIV was an absolute monarch, which means that he made all political decisions himself, without reference to a parliament.

Louis XIV appointed Jean Colbert as his finance minister. Colbert increased trade and industry, acquired overseas colonies, and improved transportation by the construction of roads and canals.

He ruled France for 72 years and made that country the most powerful in Europe. However, he fought a series of wars which, while increasing the territory of France, brought France to the verge of bankruptcy. Taxes were increased, which caused much hardship for the ordinary and for the poor.

Pleasures and palaces are, of course, an enormously entertaining part of this vivid account of France under Louis XIV. More important is the author's exploration of the political, economic, social and artistic forces that developed during the long reign of the Sun-King. It was an age of contradictions and compromises and high taxes and formal manners. And to the day he died Louis XIV ate with his fingers and acted like God. The opening account of Louis XIV's private life and loves sets the pace for this witty, provocative account of a century that, like our own, was a time of transition, dissatisfaction and progress. This was the age of Moliere, Racine, Corneille...the age of the salons and the graceful correspondents. And also an age that sent thousands of Huguenots to the galleys, the notorious death ships that served as seventeenth-century concentration camps.

"This book is the kind of modern scholarship in history which makes reading a delight. A fascinating book, excellently documented and as readable as it is authentic."

One book missing here is "Love & Louis XIV" by Antonia Fraser - an account of the king's private life. Louis XIV was insatiable; so much so it was one of the defining features of his character (such as it was).

Louis XIV was also the worst kind of spendthrift. He expected (for instance) his departments to operate on 'economies' whilst he squandered thousands+ livres on a single night's entertainment. Versailles managed to combine the two spending inconsistencies: On one hand he insisted that it must be erected at minimal cost, on the other hand he was always tearing down huge portions and ordering rebuilds.

Thanks, SRitchieable! This dual economy sounds like certain Western countries in 2012! :) I have added "Love & Louis XIV" to my lens.

I am passionate about French history; which I study for 30 years - and this history brings me to the history of so many other countries.
However, regarding Louis XIV, I think that there is so much more to say... So, I'll keep an eye on this page, just in case...
