Lounge Music - What is House Music?

Ranked #5,115 in Music, #142,779 overall

There's nothing like a nice night at the club or lounge...

...drink in hand, great company all around, and the most classy, relaxing, laid back house music filling the air all around you in a dimly lit but colorful modern room. Laughter circles the table with the one of your closest friend's jokes, and the house is kicked back, relaxing, enjoying a stress free evening together as one. A beautiful, charming young lady by your side, elegantly dressed and completely engrossed in your company.

What sounds like a perfect night out on the town is brought together by one common element no matter which lounge you visit--the music!

What is slowly emerging onto the mainstream scene (with the wave of electronic music) is that very same music that makes you feel as if there isn't a care in the world--because all you need is right there with you. You're calm, you're enlightened, and you're simply enjoying life for what it has to offer.

THAT, my friend, is the true beauty of house music. So come on over, grab a seat, grab a drink, and lets venture deeper into the melody.

What is (And What Isn't) House Music?

"Are You Listening?" by Kaskade, Sunsun

Explaining what a type of music sounds like over the internet (or through any method of speech) can often be difficult. So what better way to clarify the issue than having you listen to some yourself? Judging and evaluating art for yourself is one of the most important steps in appreciation of art--so have at it! I hope you like it!

Keep in mind that, as with most types of music, there are varying subgenres within the genre--in this case, electro house, dirty house, and big house to name a few. We will get more in depth shortly, but for now, let's close up student orientation with the oddly appropriately named track! ;)

Hint: Most lounges use big house, house, and may dip into progressive house depending on the activity level or how close the lounge is to being a club as well.

I bet you feel rejuvenated and at peace with yourself now, right?

That is the beauty of the genre--to be able to reach so deeply into your soul and calm it, empowering you to action after the last crash. The progressive beat keeps you engaged while the soothing melody rejuvenates your spirit.

On a more literal note--house music is characterized by a fusion of dance beats, jazz-esque melodic flow, and the slow building atmospheric (also called "spheres") sounds of trance. (Imagine if I had said that at the beginning--you'd still be scratching your head!)

What are some of your favorite house tracks and artists?

I love house music, but i'm looking forward to explore some good lounge music to chill on.
  • archangelptx Apr 21, 2011 @ 6:55 pm | delete
I think I need to do some work on my copy and add better flow to the page, but I guess the point I was trying to make is that these days, a lot of lounges are different from the classic jazz or nu-jazz atmostphere and going to house and big house music. Thanks for stopping by! I <3 HOUSE. =)

Om's Winter music session featuring Justin Martin is one of my favorite sets. As far as favorite artists that's a tough one. It changes moment by moment, though I do have some tracks that stay with me like: TrenteMøllers Haunting track - You and I

So... what types of house are there besides just house?

Big/Deep House

"Here I Am (Kaskade Remix)" by David Morales, Kaskade

When someone asks me what big house music is, it's difficult to say exactly. I imagine being in a large room with a large crowd (probably a lounge or night club), surrounded by people vibing to the music, jamming at peace with themselves, and at peace with each other. It's a feeling of loving the world and those around you, but still being content at being alone in the crowd--whether alone on your own or alone with a significant other. The music fills every nook and cranny of the room, and no being in ear shot is able to withstand the happy feeling washing over them. That is what big house music does to the soul.

Big house is generally a progressive beat with huge sweeping spheres and few breaks/builds/drops, but the ones that ARE there are extremely powerful--powerful enough to move mountains.

Without further ado, here is one of my all time favorite house tracks remixed by one of the greatest and most popular house artists of today--Kaskade! Featured all over the world, and one of the major players at electronic music festivals such as Electric Daisy Carnival (Los Angeles) and Ultra Music Festival (Miami).

Here are a few amazing tracks (and several of his albums available for your listening pleasure) from Kaskade that will blow your mind. Give them a listen and grab 'em if you like em!

Note: While still house, Kaskade's newer tracks are more electro or dance than house. They are amazing in their own right, but are not like what is listed on here.

Classic House

"Empty Streets" by Late Night Alumni

Although somewhat progressive sounding in nature, classic house is where the roots of the genre came from--jazzy sounds with a dance beat. Simply enough, check out the track below to understand a little more about house before we get into the history of the house music scene, and how lounges came to embrace this type of music.

House music exudes a sense of classiness onto its listeners--as if we were living in a dream life. Martinis in hand, surrounded by beautiful women and handsome men (for the ladies), watching the sunset through the glass wall of the lounge, with the smooth melodies soothing and healing the soul, entrancing it into enlightenment.

You can also check out this track for another fine example of classic house music--once again brought to you by the king of modern classic house music, Kaskade.

Dance / House

"Rock With You (2ManyDJs Mix)" by Michael Jackson, 2ManyDJs

Dance / House music is a very vague type of house, and is very difficult to draw the line between what is dance, and what is house. As a result, artists and tracks alike are debated frequently between DJs and listeners alike. I think it's all in the feeling--if it makes you want to get up and dance, have a good time, let loose, and just make the most of your night, then you've found yourself a dance / house song.

For instance, as an avid fan of electronic music of all types, I am a glover--I play with my hands with gloves that have LED lights in special casings with different modes on the hands. And this track i'm about to share with you is one of my favorite tracks to "glove" to. More on gloving another time, in another place (such as _____________), but for now, let's see how you feel after this remix of a classic.

Dirty House

"Output" by Fedde Le Grand

Dirty house strays far away from the lounge scene, and as a result we will only touch on it to let you know it's out there in case you find some in search of true house. Dirty house seems to stem from industrial music--lots of technological sounds, mechanical beats and effects, and while there may be variation in the track, the variation has a sense of symmetry and pattern to it. Such as we see in "Output' by Fedde Le Grand. If this type of house interests you, check out ____________ for more tracks and info!

A few tracks of dirty house--Afrojack, Laidback Luke, Dada Life, Steve Aoki and more!
Another fine example of dirty house, with a bit of a pop/dance flavor to it. It's amazing how so many genres of music can fit into the theme of "house" to make something entirely new, but still tasteful and catchy. Erryday I'm shufflin'!

Note: I do apologize for the profanity in the title of the video. I do not own this video and have no control over it, yet it is a great video that I feel shares an integral part of the culture of the music.

Electro House

"Rockin' High (Ricky Romero Mix)" by Fedde Le Grand, Mitch Crown

We won't get into too much detail here, as the chances of you coming across electro house at night club are much more likely than you ever hearing electro house at a lounge, but if this type of music interests you, feel free to check out ________ for more music and more information on electro house!

Just a small taste of the massive library of electro house songs. Feel free to explore the genre, as it is nearing mainstream status and is readily available no matter where you look!

Progressive House

"Big Ben" by Save The Robot

Progressive house is perhaps one of the most easily confused and difficult to define subgenres of house music. Personally, I think progressive house contains more "sound effect" type effects, and typically has either far little or an extreme amount of builds, breaks, and drops.

One of the most well known names in the progressive house subgenre is Deadmau5, who's tracks are known for not fitting into a genre of their own. They aren't quite relaxing, chill house tracks, and while you may want to get up and jam with it, they aren't quite catchy enough to get you on your feet and going all out.

I'm almost positive that description is leaving your scratching your head again, so how about we jump to a track or two and see if hearing it helps you out? If not, or if you like this subgenre of house better, you can check out __________ for more songs, suggestions, and information!

Trance / House Hybrid

"Could You Believe" by ATB

Often times trance artists can dip into house as well--although the end result is typically a dance type track, sometimes a house / trance hybrid is made. The big hits and reserved amount of builds/drops and consistency of a trance track can be found in these tracks, although they are usually catchy and make you want to get up and dance. You may hear these types of tracks at the lounge or at the club--generally they fit well in either scenario.

Note to Parents: This video is more of a PG-13 rating due to questionable behavior and sexual themes, although no real nudity is shown compared to what you would see on a beach, for example, but a little more suggestive. Please do not play it if you are under 13 and without a parent to guide your viewing.
powered by Youtube
If you want to hit that inbetween vibe, or you're looking to jump into trance, these tracks are perfect for you. The songs are by inbetweener artists that provide the perfect transition within their own style--easing you into it.
