Loung Ung
Loung Ung, sometimes referred to as LuAnn Ung is a woman who is an author and an activist. She was a child living through a war in Cambodia, and describes her life in the most moving book I have ever read. No book has made more of an impact on me than her book, "First They Killed My Father". This is a true story, this is not a work of fiction.
A young girl's life is forever changed, and she shares with you the torment of what her life was. In her second book "Lucky Child", she details her life in a new country and trying to pick up the remnants of what's left of her life.
I first learned about Loung Ung while reading Angelina Jolie's "Notes From My Travels". I wanted to know why Angelina Jolie spoke so highly of meeting this author, after being so touched by the book she read. Little did I know, that when I read this book, it would forever be with me. If there is one book you pick up to read, take the time to read Loung Ung's book. Sadly, it reads like a novel, a fast page-turner that leaves you holding your breath. I say sadly, because it was a reality, it was not a work of fiction, but the truth she had to live through. That she shares this memoir with everyone, is unbelievable. It's a book I read over a year ago, and still I tell everyone I know...YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK.

Loung Ung at a Glance
Ung was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the sixth of seven children and the third of four girls, to Sem Im Ung and Ay Chourng Ung. Her actual birthdate is unknown; the Khmer Rouge destroyed many of the birth records of the inhabitants of cities in Cambodia. At ten years of age, she escaped from Cambodia as a survivor of what became known as "the Killing Fields" during the reign of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime. After emigrating to the United States and adjusting to her new country, she wrote two books which related her life experiences from 1975 through 2003.
