Three reasons to love Lou Reed
Cofounder of one of the most influencial bands of the sixties Lou Reed helped define rock music as we know it. The myth is that few people bought the first Velvet Underground album but all that did formed bands. Obviously not true as I did, and didn't. However, what is not in doubt is that it offered a different take on life during the time of flowers and free love, one that endured.
Lou is a poet of the streets taking what he saw and experienced and laying out it for us all to see. A man of vision and imagination one of the true artists working in rock and roll. Never forgetting the roots of rock he took it into an adult arena. He wrote and sang about real things, moon and June is not a rhyme to be found in any of his songs.
He wrote and brought out what is possibly the best ever rock record, Berlin, bleak and hard to listen to. Few records can be called works of genius, this can. Not for the faint hearted this is a haunting record, both beautiful and haunting.
By turns paranoid, angry, cruel, innocent, tender, loving and caring, always thoughtful Lou Reed is the paradigm of all the rock greats that followed. Often copied, never bettered. Lou is the real deal.
