LOVE AND LIFE INDONESIAN STUDENTS IN EGYPT

Movie Title : Ketika Cinta Bertasbih (When love is blessed by God).
Director : Chaerul Umam.
This is a beautiful Indonesian movie based on a novel written by Habiburahman El Shirazy by the same title. The writer was a student of Al Azhar University in Egypt and now he is a well known novelist in Indonesia. His two novels - this one and Ayat Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love) - become best sellers and they have been filmed. The novel and the movie consist of two parts, part tells the episode when the events take place in Egypt and part two tells the episode when the events take place in Indonesia. Here is the story line in brief.
The main character is Abdullah Khairul Azzam (Kholidi Asadil Alam), an Indonesian student in Al Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. His father passed away while his mother is just an ordinary housewife and he has three sisters so life is hard for him. To finance his study he has to do small business. He produces and sells Indonesian food called Tempeh (fermented soybean) and Bakso (meatball soup). Consequently he has to spend nine years just to finish his undergraduate studies.
Another character is Eliana Pramesthi Alam (Alice Sofie Norin), the daughter of Indonesian ambassador in Cairo. She is a beautiful and smart girl. She is a graduate of EHESS, in France. Her life style is completely westernized.
Then there is Furqon, another Indonesian student in Egypt. He is a son of a rich man in Jakarta. At that time he studies at post graduate level in Al Azhar University. He is a close friend of Azzam.
The next main character is Anna Althafunnisa, a smart and beautiful girl from central Java, Indonesia who studies in Egypt. Her father is respected Islamic ulama (clergy) in a small town in central Java who run an Islamic school or madrassa.
Azzam met Anna when they were in a bus on the way to a market. Azzam bought soybean to make Tempeh while Anna and her friend bought some books. Pickpocket stole Anna's wallet so Azzam helped her go home. Then Azzam fell in love to Anna. He wanted to marry her immediately since there is no dating in Islam. So he masked his senior for help. He met Saiful Mujab who is also Anna's cousin, to propose Anna. He thought it would be easier for him to approach Saiful first. But when he told Saiful about his love, he had to receive a bitter reality. Saiful told him that Anna is much smarter than he is and that he is not a match for Anna. Furthermore he told him that someone had proposed her. In Islam it is not allowed to propose a girl if she has received a proposal. Furqan had proposed Anna.
Furqan looks like a perfect match for Anna. He is smart, handsome and rich. When he has finished his post graduate studies he is ready to marry Anna who is also smart, beautiful and a daughter of a respected person. But then something happened. Something that will change his life.
One morning Furqan woke up at eight. This is a serious mistake for a Muslim because he did not do the morning prayer at dawn. He was very surprised when he found that he was nude. When he checked his email he was shocked to find an email that blackmailed him. The email is from a woman who claimed that she had some erotic photos of her with Furqan. She asked him to pay $200,000 or she would spread their pornographic photos.
Furqan told the police about the case. Colonel Fuad from Egyptian police asked him money so Furqan promised to give him his car. One week later Fuad contacted him and told him that the police had arrested the villain. A woman was arrested for the blackmail.
As Furqan got ready to leave for Indonesia, the police called him to their office. In a blood test they reveal that Furqan had HIV virus. Fuad asked him to swear that he will not spread his disease and not make others suffer from him. Furqan was confused because he had proposed Anna Althafunnisa. Not long after the test he received good news that Anna received his proposal. Anna would become his wife.
Meanwhile Azzam concentrated on his study. Finally he could finish his study. Then he decided to come home to Indonesia after nine long years in Egypt. He missed his mother and sisters so much since he never came home during his study in Egypt. He left for Indonesia together with the beautiful and smart Eliana. Part one ended with his travel home with Eliana.
In my opinion this film is good. Kholidi who played as Azzam is good enough although this is his debut. Alice Norin who played as Eliana also a good star. The scenes and pictures of Egypt are also excellent. The theme song is another element which adds the beauty of this movie. As for the storyline, part one is only introduction to setting, characters and the conflict when Furqan was infected with HIV virus while his proposal to Anna was accepted. In short this movie is worth watching. It gives you an insight to the life of moderate Muslim especially Indonesian students who study in Egypt. So I recommend you to watch this movie.
