Love Never Dies: The Phantom of the Opera Returns

Love Never Dies, the long-awaited sequel to The Phantom of the Opera had its world premiere at the Adelphi Theatre in London on 09 March 2010. This new Andrew Lloyd Webber production will open in New York and in Australia in 2011.

Ramin Karimloo, who performed in the London Production of The Phantom of the Opera reprises his role as The Phantom in Love Never Dies. Christine Daae is played by Sierra Bogess, who starred as Christine in the Las Vegas production.

Love Never Dies continues the sad story of The Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom has fled his secret lair underneath the Paris Opera House across the Atlantic, to haunt the fairgrounds of Coney Island. The new story is set 10 years after the mysterious disappearance of The Phantom from Paris.

The Love Never Dies website says:

This show is a rollercoaster ride of obsession and intrigue...in which music and memory can play cruel tricks...and "The Phantom" sets out to prove that, indeed, LOVE NEVER DIES.

However, since the Premier of Love Never Dies, a group of Phantom of the Opera "Phans" has emerged that is vociferous in its denigration of Love Never Dies and their website is gaining in popularity: Love Should Die. In the interests of balance, information can be found further down the page.

The Phantom of the Opera

A few facts and figures

The Phantom of the Opera was originally a novel written by Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910.

The best known stage and screen adaptations of the novel are probably the 1925 silent film version starring Lon Chaney, Sr and the musical that premiered in 1986.

With music composed by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, The Phantom of the Opera is the second longest-running West End musical in history and the longest-running Broadway musical.

It is estimated that The Phantom of the Opera has been seen by more than 80 million people in 124 cities in 25 countries, and the total worldwide gross is now in excess of $5 billion.

The original cast album of the Phantom of the Opera was the first in British musical history to enter the music charts at number 1. Album sales now exceed forty million worldwide and it is the biggest selling cast album of all time.

There are 130 cast, crew and orchestra members directly involved in each performance.

I just love this album and when I was listening to the YouTube Videos, I got goose bumps. I bought the album when it was first released but I had to wait 14 years before I got the chance to go and see The Phantom of the Opera in London's West End, when The Phantom was played by Brian Conley.

Love Should Die

Phantom of the Opera Phans Protest!

Love Should Die

In August 2010, a comment was left in the Guestbook of this page that got me doing some research. It seems that a group of die hard Phantom of the Opera "Phans" have become very vociferous in their protests against the sequel to their much loved musical.

In fact they are so irate at what they see as a "trainwreck" that they say on their website Love Should Die:

"We aim to provide a platform for the many people out there who maintain that LOVE NEVER DIES should have never been given the green light and who are disappointed and disillusioned by the decisions of Lloyd Webber, his creative team and the Really Useful Group regarding the sequel to The Phantom Of The Opera."

A sequel to The Phantom of The Opera?

Is Andrew Lloyd Webber mad?

Some would say that having written the most successful Stage Musical in the history of Musical Theatre, that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is utterly mad to write a sequel. What do you think?

Is Andrew Lloyd Webber insane to think he can repeat the success of Phantom of the Opera with the sequel: Love Never Dies?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, Andrew Lloyd Webber is totally off his rocker. He should have left well alone!

MichyR says:

He IS insane because The Phantom of The Opera needs NO SEQUEL. it is beautiful and perfect by itself, and no other story will EVER be nearly as spectacular as it.

Brianna R. says:

I think that The phantom of the opera was a sucess by its self. And It was writen a long time ago. So someone writing a sequal now Hundreds of years later Has no right to continue on the story. If there was originaly ment to be a sequal there would already be one. But there isnt and How do we know that the Original writer wants someone to continue something he wrote, without asking. Of course hes dead but I wouldnt want someone to continue something with out asking or anything that I started. What if he thinks it was fine the way he was? What if he was still alive and he saw this new sequal? Would you be ashamed? I know I would.

cupes001 says:

the glory time is only one chance for artist actually.

kbs says:

HE'S OFF HIS HINGES MATE!!!

Irenebonjour says:

yes he is insane. Don't get me wrong here, i absolutely LOVE andrew lloyd webber. i'm a huge fan of his. But i just dont think Love Never Dies can ever reach the same level of success as its predecessor. I think all sequels (whether they be films or operas) can never come close to the original one...

No. The Phantom of the Opera had a very unsatisfactory ending and by writing a sequel Sir Andrew is tying up all the loose ends! We want to know!!

Sheena says:

As a 22 year old full time worker, I think the musucal scores are wonderfull it is a very rare thing indeed to see a story with such genuiness and passion. I could listen to the music forever and I love the story that she did infact love him all along an they were meant to be togther. When the first phantom came out no one was happy that Christine an Phantom didn't stay together an we all wondered what would that really be like in real life. Lloyd Weber is a geniuss an frangly i don't belieave he deserves this website. If the people who set up this website belieave Love Should die then they can't be Phans off the first movie because there missing the entire point. LOVED IT!!

NightFilly says:

Get lives you guys, stop being kill-joys. It's a story, and if the author chooses to finish HIS story, let him. It's not yours. If you don't like it, don't go. Instead, go write your own opera. Perhaps it could be about how ill-mannered and pitiful you behave because you didn't get what you wanted - you'd be right with all the violins. Meanwhile the rest of us will go and indulge in yet some more of ALW's triumphant talent.
For the record, I was quite happy with the ending of the Phantom of the Opera, but I'm delighted that we get to see him once again. Go ALW!

amandakrause says:

Although i would love another phantom movie, i would be a complete dissapointment id you dont get the 3 original Actors it the 2004 edition of Phantom of the opera.
If a second phantom move is made i dont thing a good idea is to throw away 2 out of the 3 main characters. is ur gona take the time to make a second, why not make a third, and to do that you need to keep everyone around. except maybe raule

Photahsiamirabel says:

I am just waiting for more glorious music!

Phoebe says:

The Phantom should at least have a chance honestly he deserves Christine more than Raoul . Raoul is great in all nothing against him but The Phantom deserves her as he hasn't had anything good happen to him except for Christine.

So there should be one to see where their Love goes

Love Never Dies

The Sequel to Phantom of the Opera

On 08 October 2009, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber unveiled his brand new production Love Never Dies at a global launch in London. He explained that this show had been 15 years in the planning, but there were times when he thought it would never be made.

Originally Sir Andrew discussed the plot with author Frederick Forsyth but when he found he could not progress the plot, they gave up but Forsythe did publish a novella called The Phantom of Manhattan.

It was not until Andrew Lloyd Webber was collaborating with British author, playwright, director and comedian Ben Elton on another project that Elton gave him the advice that blew away his writer's block.

Elton suggested that Sir Andrew re-introduce other characters from The Phantom of the Opera instead of trying to create new characters around The Phantom. As a result Christine Daae, Raoul, the Vicompte de Chagney, Madame Giry and her daughter Meg, all return.

Raoul and Christine have married and a new character is introduced in the form of their 10 year old son, Gustave

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber recovers from prostate cancer

Prostate cancer delays New York opening of Love Never Dies

In October 2009, less than three weeks after the exciting announcement about Love Never Dies, it was reported that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, 61, had prostate cancer and in early April 2010 it was announced that the opening of Love Never Dies at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York, has been postponed until 2011.

Although the cancer has been eradicated, Doctors have advised Andrew Lloyd Webber not to make long haul flights, which they believe aggravated his condition..

The Composer of The Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and numerous other hit musicals was admitted to an unnamed private hospital in order to have treatment, shortly after the announcement that he had cancer..

Andrew Lloyd Webber cleared his work commitments from his diary for a month and spent the rest of 2009 concentrating on treatment and recovery.

Prostate cancer kills up to 10,000 men in the UK every year.

He should have left it alone. The point of the original is you want Erik and Christine to be together but you know it could never work. Erik learned that sometimes loving someone means doing what is best for them- letting them go. LND with its luring and kidnapping and character assassinations ruins the beauty of that ending

Seen the original over 100 times and i know in my heart if there was a continuation, Love Never Dies surely isn't it.
