Love and Romance in Art

There are many artists who have benefited from the consistent interest in romantic topics and have implemented aspects of them into their work, be in painting, photography, sculpture, literature or more recently film and television. JW Waterhouse is one of the better known painters from the 19th century and he frequently incorporated elements of love and romance into his paintings. Classics such as The Siren and Lady of Shalott all some element of story about them and were based on famous literature that centered on romantic topics, though not always positive. Lady of Shalott, for example, features a woman sitting lonely whilst longing for someone who was never to return her advances.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French artist who normally concentrated on close relationships, sometimes with a romantic setting and he also achieved great success within his career, with his reputation remaining strong up to the present day. Many lesser known artists, sometimes even amateurs, have attracted large amounts of interest simply from covering romantic topics within their work and today there is not a need to be a respected academic artist necessarily for the public to show interest in some of your paintings when they are already sold on it's content. There have been some romantic topics where images have been introduced and then developed across different mediums, leading to interesting results. One great example of this was Gustav Klimt's The Kiss which was later to continue into Brancusi's sculpture of the same name as well as a Robert Doisneau photograph in Paris many years later. All followed a love theme and took the original image into their own style.

Gustav Klimt continued his style of romantic imagery into many works and the topic of romance seemed well suited to his own style that was expressive and spearheaded the Austrian art movement at that time.
