I started using Linux last year but haven't ventured into using GIMP yet. It's on the list.

GIMP! Great stuff! If you don't have access to Adobe Photoshop, GIMP will do the trick! I've been using GIMP for quite a while. And, I've liked, favorited, thumbs-upped, and lensrolled your great lens. Congrats on a great job!

Thanks! Coming from you, that is a great honor.

With your expertise in photography you must have an excellent collection of images to work with!

Is there a way to crop to predefined shapes? I see how to crop to squares/rectangles and circles/ellipses and a free-hand outline (I think).

I have worked outside of GIMP to crop to a heart or a diamond (other shapes are available) and then brought that image back into GIMP.

But since GIMP is so powerful, I can't help but believe that I have missed something and that there is also some set of predefined shapes that can also be used as starting points for a selection and maybe altered to fit a specific need.

I haven't actually tried it, but if I had the shapes, I would use layers to merge them then remove the parts of the picture I don't want to see. I'm not sure crop would actually work, I would try a combination of the selection tools and cut or clear.

This is definitely something that would take a little bit of experimentation, but I'm sure it could all be done using GIMP.

I downloaded GIMP on my computer and there it sits. I don't ever use it mostly because I haven't ever taken the time to learn how to. I never thought of looking to Squidoo for the answers. Thanks Dan! Great lens!

You were able to get some good effects with GIMP. I use InfanView all the time to resize my images. We just need to take the time to figure out how to use these wonderful free tools. 5*s
